About the Author
Dr. Christine Harrington is the executive director of the New Jersey Center for Student Success at the New Jersey Council of County Colleges. In this position, she works with colleagues at all 19 community colleges on student success initiatives, including reimagining the Student Success Course within the Guided Pathways framework. Dr. Harrington has been working in higher education for 16 years at Middlesex County College in New Jersey. For the first half of her career at Middlesex County College, she worked in Student Services as a counselor and disability services provider. She then became a full-time professor of psychology and student success and served as the director for the Center for the Enrichment of Learning and Teaching, a professional development center for faculty, and as the Student Success Course coordinator. She is a licensed psychologist with a Ph.D. in counseling psychology, an M.A. in counseling and personnel services, and a B.A. in psychology. Dr. Harrington was the 2016 recipient for the Excellence in Teaching First-Year Seminars Award. She has been teaching the Student Success Course at the community college level for over 15 years, and she currently teaches graduate courses on course design, assessment and feedback, as well as teaching strategies for the Graduate School of Education at Rutgers University. Dr. Harrington is a national expert on student success and the scholarship of teaching and learning. She frequently presents at national conferences, colleges and universities. In 2017, she was invited to give the plenary address on Increasing Academic Rigor in the First-Year Seminar at the 36th Annual Conference on the First-Year Experience in Atlanta, GA, and she gave the plenary address on Dynamic Lecturing at the Conference on Higher Education Pedagogy at Virginia Tech, VA and at the Evidence-Based Teaching and Learning Lilly Conference in Bethesda, MD.

Has some useful features

I'm in charge of a First Year Experience program at a 4 year college and forever looking for a good book to help teach our students the necessary skills. The main attraction of this book is that it uses short peer reviewed papers to introduce various skills and subjects, so it can be used as a tool to teach how to read such texts. Beyond that, it had nothing more than what most of us are preparing in house an what the larger universities are providing on their web sites. I particularly wanted meaningful and engaging assignments, but was disappointed. It would serve as a single compiled resource if you have nothing better.

A complete treatment of classical geometry from the Erlanger Program's point of view

This book teaches geometry like it should be taught nowadays.

The first chapter starts defining the group actions,transitivity,stabilizers,homogeneous spaces and faithful actions.After that develop all classical geometry using mainly group theory according to the program of Felix Klein.
Despite the abstraction due to the use of Abstract Algebra there are many figures and exercise that deal with concrete problems

Moreover the book present a wide bibliography

At the beginning can be frustrating to learn geometry from this book but with a lot of tenacity,engagement and passion you will finish for loving it

About the Author
Although Tony Buick in his career worked in medical, veterinary, and agricultural science, specializing in analytical chemistry, he turned to his lifelong interest in astronomy following an early retirement and has encouraged the younger generation to observe and understand the sky while teaching science, computing, and geography. His fascination with the Moon was given a further boost through his friendship with Sir Patrick Moore, which led to the publication of the first edition of How to Photograph the Moon and Planets with your Digital Camera. Buick has a wide range of interests, from the ‘infinitesimal’ under a microscope to the ‘infinite’ through a telescope and has published articles on tardigrades, the robust microscopic animals that can even survive for a while in space, in addition to articles on the Moon. His latest book for Springer, The Rainbow Sky, published in 2009, is a product of Buick’s interest in spectroscopy and color in general throughout the universe. Philip Pugh is a technical instructor in telecommunications. He was born in England and became interested in astronomy at age six, using his first telescope at the age of 9. However, by the age of 14, he had reached the limit of what could be done with a modest instrument. Philip majored in mathematics and worked as a computer programmer. Competitive chess and bridge had replaced astronomy as a hobby, and it was through fishing that he first became a published writer, in 1980, with a spoof about fishing for minnows. As his expertise in work improved, he started writing for computing magazines, culminating in a twelve-part series for a magazine. He married in 1989 and had a daughter in 1990. It was a view of Venus and trip to an observatory in New Zealand that rekindled his interest in astronomy, and in 1995, he was given a pair of binoculars for his 40th birthday. He was soon learning his way around the easier deep sky objects and following the moons of Jupiter. A small telescope followed in 1997 and a portable one in 1999. It seemed only natural that he would write about astronomy, and the articles soon began to flow. It was the Coronado Personal Solar Telescope that his wife and daughter presented him for his 50th birthday that led to his first book, Observing the Sun with Coronado Telescopes. Philip has experimented extensively with compact digital cameras. He has also researched the Messier objects. Philip no longer competes in chess or bridge and has not been fishing for a few years, but he now has the opportunity to view the sky from many different places. His interest in astrophotography spawned an interest in general photography, and he has collected many “tourist” shots from around the world.

Disappointing!!!!

The title of this book is very misleading for the reader and interested buyer. The first two-thirds of this book consists of some basic astronomy information and the history of the moon and many pages of the moon's geography. The author only focuses on photography within the last third of the book and even then he never really gets into any substance about the techniques of astrophotography. The images are really poor and I suppose works since the author only concentrates on doing astrophotography on a shoestring budget. I don't see how this publication is beneficial to any amateur astronomer or astrophotographer. It is not worth the money. There are numerous books (many I own) on astrophotography and digital astrophotography that really are jammed-packed with quality photos and techniques. Also, the few methods that the author's does touch upon in this book seem very anchient. The author donates 150 pages of this book (out of 254) alone to the moon and it is all about its history, formation and pages upon pages of moon atlas pics. I highly recommend that the buyer first read and review this book before purchasing. Very disappointing!

Ticket to the Moon

I was so pleased to know that such a book as this was available to help amateur astronomers new to astrophotography. I am now enjoying the easy to read introductions to each sky target and using the simple but necessary instructions to make the photography possible. Also very pleasing is that the superb images illustrated can be very closely matched by my efforts after reading this book. How refreshing not to have to wade through off-putting text and theory in order to capture beautiful pictures immediately with readily available and inexpensive equipment. I thoroughly recommend this work to anyone eager to begin taking sky pictures, especially of the Moon.

A practical guide to astrophotography on a shoestring

This book shows that you don't need to spend thousands of dollars to be able to take pictures of astronomical objects.

The book is an encouragement to amateur astronomers or someone with only a passing interest in the night sky, to go out and take photographs of the the Moon and planets. It shows how anyone can take an astronomical photo with a family digital camera and a little ingenuity and imagination.

The book also doubles as a photographic atlas to the Moon with detailed notes on what can be seen in the photographs.

I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the night sky or photography.

Jesse Ventura is the former Independent governor of Minnesota. excellent manifesto, albeit coming a bit late in the drug 'war'

this is a terrific book. it is only lacking one chapter, although that chapter would only have to be one sentence long, stating that an individual's right to use cannabis (a better term to use than pot or marijuana) stems (no pun intended) from the principle of self-ownership whereby nobody has the right to control what another (adult) person puts into their own body. This fundamental libertarian principle does not preclude restrictions on the activities that a person may engage in while 'under the influence' (e.g. one might prohibit people who have ingested trans fat - or people with low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) who have not eaten recently - from driving a vehicle if it could be established that this would place other individuals in imminent danger of harm). my only complaint is that this book should have been written earlier, when the battle for the legalization of medical marijuana had not yet been won (although that war does still require some mopping up action to be completed including the federal rescheduling of cannabis as a drug, or preferably, by the removal of cannabis from the controlled substance schedule, altogether).

Well worth reading if you're interested in learning more about marijuana

Another well researched book by Jesse Ventura with plenty of facts. I read it with an open mind and have to say it made me rethink my stance on resistance to legalization of marijuana. Everyone should do their due diligence and get the facts become coming to a judgement about marijuana.

Maxine James has been broken.

Max realizes that it's time to stop living in fear and regret. Encouraged by Nadine, Max agrees to return to therapy.

Nadine's brother in law, Matthew has never been quiet about his feelings regarding his brother Eric's marriage. He has also never been quiet about his dislike for Max, a woman he feels is too outspoken for her own good...and Max has never hesitated to call him out on his racism.

Neither of them want to admit the undeniable attraction which is at the root of their animosity, but their siblings know what's really the cause of all that tension. Max and Matthew are persuaded to go on a "pretend" date and the date turns out to be anything but pretend, opening the door to feelings that both of them had to accept.

Good but not for everyone

WARNING, THIS REVIEW IS FULL OF SPOILERS. This one gets 4 stars. If reading about molestation, rape and/or sexual assault disturbs you I suggest you DO NOT read this book. The subject matter was difficult to handle overall but interesting. It was better at the beginning but I found the end repetitive. How many times does the reader have to hear about Maxine's insecurities and her fear that Matthew would change his mind and not want to be with her? She started to irritate me after a while. Also, since this was a sequel, hearing a bit more about what Jeremy and Aura were up to would be nice. Finally, after all the angst around their sexual intimacy the book just ended abruptly after they sealed the deal. I gave 4 stars because it kept my interest.

Better than the first book

This is the third book that I have read by B.D. Anderson,and she keeps getting better. What I especially like is that she doesn't sugar coat and ignore the fact that her protagonists are in interracial relationships. In the first book,The Preacher's Son, she introduced Matthew,who was Jeremy's cousin.He was portrayed as a bigot who was against the marriage of Jeremy and Aura because he was white and she was black. You just knew that this man was in for a revelation,and her name was Maxine.She was the sister of his younger brother's black wife .She had been raped as a young girl and was still suffering the affects of that trauma. The story became one of healing for both of them. For Max getting over her aversion of the opposite sex and for Matt to accept his attraction to black women,an attraction that he has had since he was a young boy in preschool. My favorite character,though,was Matt's grandmother,who revealed that the men in her late husband's family had a history of sneaking around with black women,which is a part southern history that you don't hear about. I really enjoyed this book even more than the previous one. Good job Ms. Anderson.

Could've Been

This could've been a truly awesome book if not for it seemed like two different people wrote it. One minute the twins were babies and then a year old. The problem was who burps 1 year olds?? And then Matt has 3 brother's but in one part they make Nathan his cousin. Then no mention of him at all when Matt was shot. It's stuff like this that took away from the book

He and other members were condemned to death, but at the last moment, a note from Tsar Nicholas I was delivered to the scene of the firing squad, commuting the sentence to four years' hard labour in Siberia. His seizures, which may have started in 1839, increased in frequency there, and he was diagnosed with epilepsy. On his release, he was forced to serve as a soldier, before being discharged on grounds of ill health. In the following years, Dostoyevsky worked as a journalist, publishing and editing several magazines of his own and later A Writer's Diary, a collection of his writings. He began to travel around western Europe and developed a gambling addiction, which led to financial hardship. For a time, he had to beg for money, but he eventually became one of the most widely read and highly regarded Russian writers. His books have been translated into more than 170 languages. Dostoyevsky influenced a multitude of writers and philosophers, from Anton Chekhov and Ernest Hemingway to Friedrich Nietzsche and Jean-Paul Sartre. On 25 January 1881, while searching for members of the terrorist organisation Narodnaya Volya ("The People's Will") who would soon assassinate Tsar Alexander II, the Tsar's secret police executed a search warrant in the apartment of one of Dostoyevsky's neighbour. On the following day, Dostoyevsky suffered a pulmonary haemorrhage. Anna denied that the search had caused it, saying that the haemorrhage had occurred after her husband had been looking for a dropped pen holder. After another haemorrhage, Anna called the doctors, who gave a poor prognosis. A third haemorrhage followed shortly afterwards. Among Dostoyevsky's last words was his quotation of Matthew 3:14–15: "But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptised of thee, and comest thou to me? And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness", and he finished with "Hear now—permit it. Do not restrain me!" When he died, his body was placed on a table, following Russian custom. He was interred in the Tikhvin Cemetery at the Alexander Nevsky Convent, near his favourite poets, Karamsin and Zhukovsky. It is unclear how many attended his funeral. According to one reporter, more than 100,000 mourners were present, while others describe attendance between 40,000 and 50,000. His tombstone is inscribed with lines from the New Testamen.

Check the Publisher of this book before you buy

Crime and Punishment is one great novel. However, we have a bit of misleading marketing going on here. Make sure you're buying the version you think you're buying before you order. "Crime and Punishment" published by General Books LLC is a poor quality scanned in version. If you do the "Look Inside" thing on this book, you'll see the inside of another version of the book, NOT the one you will receive.

To give you a few quotes from the publishers website: "We created your book using OCR software ..... with up to 3,500 characters per page, even one percent can be an annoying number of typos.... After we re-typeset ... your book, the page numbers change so the old index and table of contents no longer work .... we usually remove them. .... Our OCR software can't distinguish between an illustration and a smudge or library stamp so it ignores everything except type. ..... We created your book using a robot who turned and photographed each page. Our robot is 99 percent accurate. But sometimes two pages stick together. And sometimes a page may even be missing from our copy of the book. .....". There's no manual editing whatsover.

You get the general idea. Unfortunately, books published by General Books LLC are named, seemingly intentionally, so that they have reviews associated with much better quality imprints. General Books LLC is an imprint of VDM Published (google them on Wikipedia), which is flooding Amazon with poor quality reprints and, unfortunately, many of them have the reviews associated with the original or with beter quality imprints associated with them.

Seems like it's Caveat Emptor on Amazon these days as Amazon certainly doesn't seem to be doing anything to protect it's customers from this Publisher.

Amazon needs to start recognizing the difference in translations

This is not the version of the book I clicked on! When you look at the (paperback) edition of Crime and Punishment translated by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, it says right below it, "Start reading Crime and Punishment on your Kindle..." and also lists the different versions available - paperback, hardcover, etc. - and includes a Kindle Edition. But when you click on either, you get this, which is a completely different translation. Pevear and Volokhonsky have been widely praised, their translations now considered far and away the best English versions available of various classic works of Russian Literature. But Amazon lumps everything with the same title as if it were the same product. Some of the customer-uploaded images of the book's cover even say that it is the Pevear and Volokhonsky version, but it is not. It's a 1914 translation by Constance Garnett.

This is the reason people started to hate big box and online bookstores when they first started putting neighborhood bookstores out of business -- because they don't seem to care about books, just making money. But what's funny here is that they could actually charge money for the better translation, since it's new, but instead they choose to give away an inferior version and pretend it's the same thing. (They do offer the Pevear and Volokhonsky version of Demons for a price - a version easier to distinguish because the newer translation even changes the title from the less-accurate The Possessed - versions with that title are available for free.) Also, because they don't distinguish between different translations, there is no button available under the Pevear and Volokhonsky version to request that the publisher make it available for Kindle.

It's also difficult to know what version of a book is being reviewed sometimes. I'll be reading reviews on the Kindle Edition page, and the reviewer will describe the fine leather binding. This is especially frustrating now that I realize the actual content - the language - of the book I'm buying could be different from the one I read about online.

Since getting my Kindle, I've been impressed by the machine itself, but thoroughly unimpressed by Amazon's handling of content. They should focus less exclusively on getting people to buy the device, and work harder at improving the way they sell books and other content for it.

A Classic for a Reason

I initially approached this book with a great deal of trepidation. I had never read Dostoyevsky, and was concerned that I would get bogged down in some lengthy, mind-numbingly boring, nineteenth-century treatise on the bestial nature of man or something. I am happy to report this is not the case. Instead, and to my delight, it is a smoothly flowing and fascinating story of a young man who succumbs to the most base desire, and the impact this has both psychologically and otherwise on himself and those around him.

To be sure, the book seems wordy in places, but I suspect this has to do with the translation. And what translator in his right mind would be bold enough to edit the great Dostoyevsky? But this is a very minor problem.

What we get with Dostoyevsky is dramatic tension, detailed and believable human characters, and brilliant insight into human nature. Early in the novel our hero meets and has a lengthy conversation with Marmeladov, a drunkard. This conversation is never uninteresting and ultimately becomes pathetic and heartbreaking, but I kept wondering why so much time was spent on it. As I got deeper into the book, I understood why this conversation was so important, and realized that I was in the hands of a master storyteller. This is also indicative of the way in which the story reveals itself. Nothing is hurried. These people speak the way we actually speak to one another in real life, and more importantly, Dostoyevsky is able to flesh out his characters into whole, three-dimensional human beings.

And what a diverse group of characters! Each is fleshed out, each is marvelously complex. Razujmikhin, the talkative, gregarious, good-hearted, insecure and destitute student; Sonia, the tragic child-prostitute, with a sense of rightness in the world; Petrovich, the self-important, self-made man, completely out of touch with his own humanity; Dunia, the honorable, wronged sister: we feel like we know these people because we've met people like them. They fit within our understanding of the way human beings are.

Dostoyevsky also displays great insight into human nature. Svidrigailov, for example, talks of his wife as liking to be offended. "We all like to be offended," he says, "but she in particular loved to be offended." It suddenly struck me how true this is. It gives us a chance to act indignantly, to lash out at our enemies, to gain favor with our allies. I don't believe I've ever seen this thought expressed in literature before. In fact, it never occurred to me in real life!

Petrovich, Dunia's suitor, not only expects to be loved, but because of his money, and her destitution, he expects to be adored! To be worshipped! He intentionally sought out a woman from whome he expected to get this, and is comletely flummoxed when she rejects him. His is an unusual character, but completely realized.

There is so much more to talk about: the character of Raskolnikov, which is meticulously and carefully revealed; the sense of isolation which descends on him after committing his crime; the cat and mouse game played on him by the police detective. I could go on and on. I haven't even mentioned the historical and social context in which this takes place. Suffice to say this is a very rich book.
Do not expect it to be a rip-roaring page turner. Sit down, relax, take your time, and savor it. It will be a very rewarding experience. And thank you SL, for recommending it.

Don't let gut health, probiotics, kefir, kombucha, and other "healthy" perhaps unfamiliar words scare ya! There are a lot of simple, familiar recipes in this book and something for everyone: kids, breakfast smoothies, healthy snack smoothies, non-smoothie drinkers, even dessert-like drinks. I can easily whip up a smoothie with ingredients in my freezer but when I follow these recipes -- they turn out perfectly each time and the variety is refreshing and exciting and delish! I highly recommend this feel-good recipe book!!! vicky from vickyandjen.com

Very helpful

Bought for Anatomy class and very happy I did. It is very detailed and the photos and colors are vivid and labeled well. It is an excellent study tool. I 3-hole-punched mine so I could put it in a binder. That was very helpful to me. I would recommend this for anyone studying Anatomy, or even Physiology, especially for the price.

About the Author
Tim Hauf is a photographer with a passion for travel and a desire to create a better understanding and appreciation of the world around us through photography. In addition to calendars and four other books, his work has been featured in several publications including Islands, Coast to Coast, Roads to Adventure, Sunset, Explore, Terre Sauvage, Dove, and others. Tim is currently working on a new book about Kangchenjunga, the third highest peak in the world.

Conger Beasley has collaborated with photographer Tim Hauf on two previous photo/text books, Little Trees, Big Sky: Portrait of a Northern Wilderness, and Solo-Khumbu: The Trek to Everest. His book, We Are a People in This World: The Lakota Sioux and the Massacre at Wounded Knee, won the Western Writers of America Spur Award for best contemporary nonfiction in 1995. He is currently working on a book about the mysterious death of Meriwether Lewis.

Beautiful photographs of a far away place

I bought this book because we are planning a trip to Patagonia. This book with its magnificent photographs has been a huge help in planning the trip. Not because it gives any travel tips, but the photographs speak for themselves. This is not a travel advice book. There is no information regarding where to stay or eat. However, the photographs tell me what not-to-miss sites to include in my tour. The photographs are so gorgeous that I cannot hardly wait to get there. This book plus a good South American travel agent have allowed me to establish a travel plan to the most scenic locations. The photographer must have spent a long time traveling the area. His views of glaciers, lakes, dramatic clouds and wildlife show his talent. Many outstanding panoramas are included. These must have been taken with a high quality panorama camera. This is a very nice photo book, to be looked at over and over again.

Patagonia a beautiful read!

I recommend this book highly. Tim Hauf?s remarkable photography captures the many regions of Patagonia - the diversity of landscapes, the various moods and raw beauty, a stark grandeur. The uncivilized immensity of mountains and water, sometimes filled with icebergs other times with whitecaps, some misty above the power of falls, leaves the viewer in awe. We are surprised and delighted by the variety of images, from the smallest of flowering bushes to the romping of guanacos, but overall we are speechless before the vastness of empty space. Fortunately, Conger Beasley?s text brings the photography into a semblance of understandable. By introducing us to the history of the region alongside tales of the personal journey that he shared with Hauf, Beasley brings the reader into the wild and foreign land as a fellow traveller. We are less intimidated by the endless wild.

Tim Hauf is one of those photographers who raises to the level of visual art with his spectacular, full-color photography. Patagonia: Wild Land At The End Of The Earth continues to document his ability to capture truly memorable and impressive imagery -- this time to that wild and desolate region near the bottom-most tip of South American known as Patagonia. This latest showcase of Tim Hauf's photography is enhanced with an informative text by Conger Beasley as we tour through the history of this obscure but fascinating country which is sparsely populated, yet offers visions of granite towers, glaciers, wildlife, farmlands, and breathtaking landscapes of incredible beauty. Patagonia: Wild Land At The End Of The Earth is a welcome and highly recommended addition to personal, professional, and academic landscape photography collections.
