Tyrone Slothrop, a GI in London in 1944, has a big problem. Whenever he gets an erection, a Blitz bomb hits. Slothrop gets excited, and then (as Thomas Pynchon puts it in his sinister, insinuatingly sibilant opening sentence), "a screaming comes across the sky," heralding an angel of death, a V-2 rocket. The novel's title, Gravity's Rainbow, refers to the rocket's vapor arc, a cruel dark parody of what God sent Noah to symbolize his promise never to destroy humanity again. History has been a big trick: the plan is to switch from floods to obliterating fire from the sky.

Slothrop's father was an unwitting part of the cosmic doublecross. To provide for the boy's future Harvard education, he took cash from the mad German scientist Laszlo Jamf, who performed Pavlovian experiments on the infant Tyrone. Laszlo invented Imipolex G, a new plastic useful in rocket insulation, and conditioned Tyrone's privates to respond to its presence. Now the grown-up Tyrone helplessly senses the Imipolex G in incoming V-2s, and his military superiors are investigating him. Soon he is on the run from legions of bizarre enemies through the phantasmagoric horrors of Germany.

That's just the Imipolex G tip of the shrieking vehicle that is Pynchon's book. It's pretty much impossible to follow a standard plot; one must have faith that each manic episode is connected with the great plot to blow up the world with the ultimate rocket. There is not one story, but a proliferation of characters (Pirate Prentice, Teddy Bloat, Tantivy Mucker-Maffick, Saure Bummer, and more) and events that tantalize the reader with suggestions of vast patterns only just past our comprehension. You will enjoy Pynchon's cartoon inferno far more if you consult Steven Weisenburger's brief companion to the novel, which sorts out Pynchon's blizzard of references to science, history, high culture, and the lowest of jokes. Rest easy: there really is a simple reason why Kekul� von Stradonitz's dream about a serpent biting its tail (which solved the structure of the benzene molecule) belongs in the same novel as the comic-book-hero Plastic Man.

Pynchon doesn't want you to rest easy with solved mysteries, though. Gravity's Rainbow uses beautiful prose to induce an altered state of consciousness, a buzz. It's a trip, and it will last. --Tim Appelo

Novel by Thomas Pynchon, published in 1973. The sprawling narrative comprises numerous threads having to do either directly or tangentially with the secret development and deployment of a rocket by the Nazis near the end of World War II. Lieutenant Tyrone Slothrop is an American working for Allied Intelligence in London. Agents of the Firm, a clandestine military organization, are investigating an apparent connection between Slothrop's erections and the targeting of incoming V-2 rockets. As a child, Slothrop was the subject of experiments conducted by a Harvard professor who is now a Nazi rocket scientist. Slothrop's quest for the truth behind these implications leads him on a nightmarish journey of either historic discovery or profound paranoia, depending on his own and the reader's interpretation. Avoid Penguin's Deluxe Edition (too many typos)

Reading Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow is hard enough without deletions, typos, and occasional rewording of the authors original work. But that's what you get with this so-called "Deluxe Edition" put out by Penguin in 2006.

Starting GR I realized I wasn't getting the full story (even though this is Pynchon), so I borrowed a 1973 edition and started comparing it to my Penguin "Deluxe Edition". Within the first 100 pages I found at least a dozen typos, rewordings, and just plain deletions.

An example, pp. 139-140, last sentence:

...Your task, in the dreams, is often to [cross under the trees through the shadows before something hap] pens.

The portion in the brackets is totally absent in this copy. Deletions like this make for a completely incomprehensible novel and ruin the author's work.

Note that my rating doesn't reflect my opinion of GR, just the "Deluxe Edition" Penguin has put forth (2006 ed.). Frankly, Penguin's QA/proofing department should be ashamed for putting out such a turd.

For the love of the Mistress of the Night, please, avoid this edition!!!

A Challenge To All Lazy People

When I first read this book I did so without wanting to put any effort into it. I was lazy. I didn't bother to look up any of the historical, scientific, or pop cultural references. Moreover, if a difficult word popped up I didn't bother to reach for a dictionary to find out what it meant. Often I'd think to myself, 'Who is Clausewitz?' or 'What is a narodnik?', and then I'd move on without finding out what these terms actually meant ( even though I could have found an answer right away by simply typing any of these terms into an internet search engine ). The process was arduous, painful, and frustrating. I hated this book. I simply didn't know what he was saying because I couldn't put anything into context. The second time I read Gravity's Rainbow I purchased an annotated guide, while also making an effort to find some of the more obscure references myself. Though I can't claim to understand everything he was saying, I did grow comfortable scrabbling about Pynchon's exotic little universe. I came to respect the genius of this book, both in a thematic and artistic sense. I believe that one of Pynchon's goals is to dare the reader into reading this book. Simply put, he wants us to work. Kierkegaard said that being a Christian should not be an easy task. The same is true, I think, in literature. For, the safer literature gets, the more it comes to resemble TV. Yes, on the surface this book is difficult, even pretentious. But if you work at it, that is, actually make an effort to understand Pynchon's somewhat obscure references and his abstruse vocabulary, the results are most rewarding. Simply put, he's not going to spoonfeed literature to his audience. Nor, as a reader, should you want to be spoonfed.

The Best Novel Since "Lolita" and "Ulysses"

"Some joker put hashish in the hollandaise, causing a run on the brocolli." Just another event in the life of Lt. Tyron Slothrop, who was attending the wild party in question in the Herman Goering casino as part of his search for the Schwatzgerat--the V2 rocket (serial no. 00000) which carries the mysterious Imipolex G device--all over wartime Europe, while the British secret service, and assorted others, search for *him*.

Why? You'll have to read the book. Along the way, he meets--among many others--a British captain with black-market connections that allow him to have fresh bananas in London's wartime winter in return for homegrown "magic mushroom" drugs; an African tribe whose members serve in the SS as V2 crews; an insane American Major whose solidiers sing diry limmericks about the V2's various components; an Italian nobleman--and a British Brigadier--with odd sexual practices (even by Pynchon's standards); and that's just the start of it.

The adventures of Lt. Slothrop in this mad looking-glass world are funny, amusing, bizzare, and complex. What's more--and this is what makes the novel a masterpiece--Pynchon integrates so many actual facts into his fictional world that it makes it and its inhabitants have much more versimilitude than the people described in most *non*-fiction works about WWII. Slothrop is more "real" than the Hitler we read about in most biographies of the man; his friends and enemies more real than, say, the defendants in Nuremberg are in most books about the trial.

If Pynchon speaks, say, of a car used by a lieutenant in a specific sub-department of the German Army in 1944, you can be damn sure that particular car model was in fact used by just such lieutenants at the time in reality; that pynchon took into account the wartime shortages that made the car's quality to deteriorate from 1944 to 1941; and that the lieutenant's resentment of this would be relevant to the plot.

To be sure, the lieutenant might then want to kill Slothrop in order to fulfill an anient prophecy based on Mayan star charts (which you can bet are also accurately portrayed); or to have a homosexual affair with him; or to do any number of bizzare or absurd things that one would expect in the looking-glass world where the novel is set. But that is just what makes this novel so great: Pycnhon doesn't research to teach us facts about WWII--even if a lot of the facts he puts in the novel are probably unknown even to WWII history buffs (like myself). He *uses* his research to create his funny, bizzare, and incredibly engaging world.

Read it--perferably, with a glass of wine (or something stronger) at your side. You will laugh, chortle, be shocked, and be amazed. Rarely had a better novel been written.

Beautiful

This is a beautiful work on one of modern times most interesting and intriguing aircraft. Almost perfect and just as good as the Saab 35 book that preceded it. A bit more about the political background and history of the aircraft would have been nice though. I can't wait for the Saab 39 book! Please don't be too long.

About what I would have expected from the walkaround series, there's not much in here that cant be found elsewhere, except for some interesting info on the prototypes. Still, for the price, its a convenient source of closeup pictures for modellers. I suspect the Swedish book on the Viggen would be alot better though.

Great Tool for Help with your Property and Casualty Test

This book was the most helpful tool I could fine to help me prepare for my testing. The book takes you by the hand and focus on the what, how, and issues you need for everything you need to know.

The book even taught me to pay attention to the timing of the actual test and how to be able to set my goals to finish the exam. And also, to answer all the questions whether I am sure if the answer is correct.

There was even a list of 20 tips on what to do while taking the test. I found this very helpful to me, because many of the suggestions that were brought up, I would have never thought of.

Take some pressure off youself before you take the test and make sure you purchase this book!

Getting prepared for this exam can be a challenge because there is so much to remember and so many details to go over. It can make your mind spin! But if you have this book to help you get prepared to write the exam, you’ll be in a much better position at the end of your studying. It’s a well written book that covers all the topics and information in one guide. It’s nice to not have to drag around a bunch of texts. Everything you’ll need is in this one book.

The book is cleanly formatted and well detailed. It is laid out in such a manner that it is enjoyable to read. It makes dry information interesting. The writers are experts at this test and they really know what you should focus on. That’s what makes this book so convenient. All the notes and materials are put into one simple to use spot. It’s great to help you get prepared and also you can use it for reference. It’s so easy to just go back and review a section as needed.

There’s also bonus information include to help you with time management, test strategies and exam secrets. That is extremely helpful as you get extra insights into this exam. About the Author
Brian Astbury founded and ran South Africa's first non-racial theatre/arts venue, The Space, in the 70's, where he commissioned internationally famous plays like Sizwe Banzi is dead, The Island and Statements after an arrest under the Immorality Act from playwrights like Athol Fugard, Pieter-Dirk Uys, Geraldine Aron and Fatima Dike, South Africa's first black woman playwright. Many of the 'graduates' of The Space have gone on to become mainstays of the post-Apartheid South African theatre, TV and film scene. At The Space he began his career as a director. In the 80's he moved to London when his wife, South Africa's greatest actress, Yvonne Bryceland, joined the National Theatre Company. Here he began to teach - first at LAMDA, then, in the 90's at Mountview, where he was Head of Acting, Directing and Musical Theatre Courses. In 2003 he moved to E15 where he set up the Contemporary Theatre Practice course to teach actors, directors and writers the arts of survival through production of their own material. Later he headed the MA in Professional Theatre for Writers and Directors, before retiring in 2008. Over the years Astbury has formulated the techniques for training actors, writers and directors described in Trusting the Actor in collaboration with students and professional actors. Many of these techniques have their basis in the use of energy and emotion to free the practitioner's imagination, allowing actors to understand and be able to access the mysterious state known as 'being in the moment'. He has also developed methods of accessing and freeing the imagination of writers through the use of mind-mapping and image-streaming. He has done workshops on these techniques at the Young Vic, the National Theatre Studio, the London Playwrights Collective among others.

a must read!

For the last 10 years, I couldn't name a recent book that would have brought a fresh perspective to the actor's craft. The ones worth reading were from past decades, from Stanislavsky to Viola Spolin, from Meisner to Eric Morris.
Until I came across Brian Astbury's book - Trusting the Actor, published in 2011.
What a hidden gem this is.
Brian Astbury is a South-African theatre director who developed a unique approach to acting while working as an acting teacher in the UK.
This approach can be (perhaps unhelpfully?) described as anti-Stanislavsky - he stirrs away from analyzing the text and tries to get the actor's "right-side of the brain" engaged in the process, turning the performance into something alive and instinctive.

The first half of the book retraces his professional career and life, with a good dose of personality and wit, while pinpointing the biggest dilemmas faced by actors. The second half outlines the exercises that Brian teaches. Best of all, he names his sources (current findings from neuroscientists like Antonio Damasio and Joseph LeDoux, for instance), explains his reasoning, and is brave/humble enough to admit mistakes and lessons learned along the way.
Beyond mixing theory with practice, there's so much passion in his writing... it makes for such a compelling read and a real inspiration to anyone who is taking first steps towards the profession.

On a side note, this approach -or something very close to it- has been practiced by Brazilian acting coaches like Fatima Toledo in Brazil's film industry, leading to a visceral acting that has drawn a lot of attention in films like Central Station, City of God, Lower City, Elite Squad, among others. So if you're curious to see what this technique can lead to, it's worth taking a look at the films mentioned.

Finally. An accessible, unpretentious and immediately applicable piece of practical advice about Acting, Directing, Life & What to do about it.

Do you ever wish you could take a friend, teacher or icon, fold them up and put them in your pocket for inspiration, support or just plain company? Well, ladies and gentlemen, here it is: a perfectly portable Brian Astbury! As my mentor and friend, I've often wanted to zap to the UK, wander into his favourite caf and simply listen. Now, in the absence of zapping, I simply open my Kindle (what an invention!) and read.

This book is an absolute must in the tool bag of any modern day theatre professional and an interesting read for those interested in emotional and social behaviour. The book strikes a perfect balance between theory and practice, covering a range of exercises, techniques and methods, and substantiating them with a range of funny and moving memories from Astbury's intriguing life.

Mostly, I've found this book hugely inspiring as an actor and director.

Inspirational

This book contains some of the most inspirational and practical information for actors, directors and writers that I've ever encountered. While I have found other theatre books to be though provoking, none of them have stirred me to pick up a pen and start writing immediately the way this one has. I had the privilege of spending several months studying with Brian in college during a particularly stimulating and formative time. Reading the book took me back to the feelings and impulses I remember having at that time but also drove me forward to new creative endeavors. I am thrilled to now have a means of listening to Brian whenever I find myself stuck creatively, by simply opening the book and reading his words.

Don't listen to the negative reviews!

I was hesitant to purchase How to Raise the Perfect Dog after reading the reviews that said the book was mostly old stories from Mexico, lacked specifics, and relied on lessons from older dogs in the pack. After reading the entire book, it was clear that the people who wrote those negative reviews hadn't really read the book. There were a couple of stories about Cesar's time growing up in Mexico and Cesar does point out how older dogs teach puppies in their pack, but everything was in the context of how anyone can apply these experiences and principles. I found plenty of specific guidelines and tips, which I am using now. I also read the New Skete Monks' book and found the two books to be complementary. Thanks to these two enjoyable and informative books, our 4 month old pup is well on his way to being a perfect dog!

Invaluable insights into the mind of a dog

I'm reading this along with "The Art of Raising a Puppy"-- they're booth good, for different reasons. I love Cesar's approach (which can be used in concert with the other book), although I believe it's mostly innate for him and he's not always best at concisely verbalizing/relating those traits to other humans.

Like his TV Shows, his book is informal and he rambles a bit-- the book would benefit from a ghost writer or editor.
That said, the messages he has to offer are golden and worth the read.

In comparison to "The Art of Raising a Puppy," in "How to Raise the Perfect Dog: Through Puppyhood.." Cesar does a better job discussing the dog mind and psyche. The former does a better job objectively laying out schedules and charts and step-by-step how to choose and train a puppy.

So read Cesar's book for understanding the dogs mind and read "The Art..." for a step-by-step guide.

I Highly recommend this book!

Even though I was a Vet Tech for many years & worked for the dog trainer who trained the dog that was in the movie "Annie" years ago, I still learn new things from Cesar EVERY time I hear or read about his way of interacting with dogs. I've raised a lot of puppies, both personally, as well as in a rescue capacity. But I KNEW Cesar would have some great tips for raising a happy, well-adjusted pup, that I didn't already know. And he sure did! But I HIGHLY advise that you smart reading this book BEFORE you bring your new pup home. If that's not possible, then read it as quickly as possible because puppies grow & learn much faster than humans do. That also means they can learn some bad habits very quickly! It's OUR responsibility to make sure to give the little guy the best possible scenario to grow up in!
