This is a HUGE book with tons of excellent, detailed information about a very complex and powerful tool. The book is well written but the reader should be conversant with photography and computer terms to get the most out of the book's instructions. After checking out numerous other titles that cover the same topic, I can recommend this as among the best.. Anyone new to Photoshop CC (or old hands that need to step up to some the finer points of the application) will find this a useful instruction and reference book as they learn the workings of this software.

Pretty freaking good

I was very excited about this book, it's huge! The only problem is that the pages are black and white and flimsy like newspaper...it's ok but I wish it was in color. Other than the obvious, the book has a lot of coverage in it, I am a beginner in photoshop CC and this is absolutely a great book for anyone. I don't think it skips anything.

Incredible collection

Although Stedman's dictionary seems to be the preference for most medical schools, Taber's actually contains a lot more words than Stedman's. To be fair, there isn't much competition when it comes to medical dictionaries, it's either Stedman's or Taber's. Stedman's update is usually 4 to 5 years, but you'll only notice the lack of new words if you're in the research field. Taber's tends to release a new edition every year or two, plus you get more words at a lower price. In terms of the definitions in Taber's, it's written to be just a bit more considerate for the layman. Whereas in Stedman's, you would probably need to be at least a medical student or higher to make the most use of it. Best solution is to get both, at least one of the two definitions will make better sense to you.

The best reference book compiled!

The Tabers is the authority of all medical information, easy to find new information and very accurate. The only problem is that when I look up one item, I get distracted into browsing into other definitions! I recommend this book (almost any edition, with very few pertinent changes with each edition) for anyone interested in the medical field.

The first book in many years to grip me like this. A TRUE page turner.

Absolutely Terrific !!!
I was asked to review this and to be honest I wasn't keen. Sci-Fi and Fantasy are more my cup of tea but I received this and on a long journey with nothing to do I reluctantly started to read this. The hours flew past !!! I couldn't wait to get some more personal time to read more. What a brilliant book. It played out in my head like a film and it should definately be made into one. A cross between Day of the Jackel and the Bourne Identity.
Plot is great and well thought out, imagery is superb. For me this author is a revelation, as like I said I'd not normally read this genre but from now on he will be the exception. Good effort and more please !!!!

Potential Lost in the Details

Mr. Lovejoy either is a commercial pilot himself or did a lot of research, because the technical aspects of the novel are very detailed. Too detailed, really, almost as though the author wants to show off his expertise. It's the equivalent of a Western novel where every step of the hero saddling his horse is explained in excruciating detail. Because I'm an avid aviation buff, believe me, there has to be A LOT of detail in an aviation story for me to lose interest.

The novel started out well, with an interesting super-terrorist theme. But then it seemed to become bogged down in the details of the first crash (I assume there are others, but I didn't get that far). I know I'm losing interest when I start skimming, and that's what I did as the aftermath of the crash was explaining in, yes, excruciating detail.

Finally, I gave up. The rest of the novel may be great. Maybe I'll continue to skim and see what I find.

Well researched, plotted and written

From the opening scene, Ben hooks you into his well-researched and constructed world. It's clear he's done his homework across the various industries and organizations that are involved in the plot of his book. Naturally there are a few places where credibility is stretched to breaking point, but for such a well-plotted and written book they're more than forgivable. I'm waiting impatiently for Ben's next volume, trailed at the end of 11/9.

Twenty-five years after the publication of the bestselling Getting to Yes, Ury addresses the other side of the coin, but his version of "No" is not a simple rejection. "A Positive No begins with Yes and ends with Yes," he says, because it defines the nay-sayer's self-interests and paves the way for a continued relationship. Ury delineates this "Yes! No. Yes?" pattern recursively, so that each step is itself another three-part process. In addition to drawing on his own experiences as a negotiator for conflicts in countries like Chechnya and Venezuela, and the historical examples of activists like Rosa Parks, Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi, he shows how his principles can be used in the home and the workplace. He even throws in a few literary precedents, citing Melville's Bartleby the Scrivener, whose repetition of the phrase "I would prefer not to" is cited as a "simple and admirable" method of polite refusal. Some of Ury's advice, like describing how another's actions make you feel rather than attacking the action, may strike the more cynical minded as touchy-feely, but his reminders to consider the other person's perspective while asserting your own position create a clear, unambiguous path to win-win situations. Stand Up for Your Interests without Destroying your Relationships

Filled with pertinent and poignant case studies and reasoned arguments, The Power of a Positive No (a prequel to Getting to Yes and Getting Past No) shows how rushing to decisions, giving in to negative emotions (fear, guilt and anger), failing to articulate one's own underlying interests and being ill-prepared can often torpedo relationships in business and life while failing to advance your own interests and goals. Three simple and reasonable assumptions must be made before entering any negotiation.

1. The other party exists.
2. The other party's interests exist.
3. The other party's power exists.

Negative emotions often lead to accommodating the other party (guilt), avoiding conflict altogether (fear) or attacking the opposition (guilt). Needless to say, these tactics do not foster respect and are the result of emotional short circuits run amok. One of the most important components of the solution is to recognise your own emotions and seeing them as events that are happening to you, rather than as something you are. "I am angry" is far less productive than "I feel anger." That is not to say that emotions are something that must be suppressed. That is often counterproductive and tends to result in emotional outbursts at a later date. Emotions can often signal problems or opportunities that can be uncovered and dealt with. Detaching oneself from feelings of intense anger, fear, guilt, anxiety or apprehension can be very effective when preparing for a negotiation. Calming oneself, going to the balcony and refusing to give in to one's own temper or indignation will often foster respect from the other party.

Three essential points must be uncovered before initiating any negotiation. What do you want to create that is of value to you? How will you protect it once you have it? What can you change that doesn't work? Ury uses the example of Southwest Airlines, a superlative leader in the US air transport industry. By selecting profit, reliable flights and fast turnover, it did away with reserved seats and meals on its flights. This proved to be a very successful strategy. Taking customers out to extravagant meals before delivering bad news can also help dampen the disappointment that is almost certain to result. Again, the key is to build, nurture and sustain healthy, productive and win-win relationships for all parties.

Ury's most insightful (and counter-intuitive) insight concerns how to help your adversary cross your golden bridge to agreement. It is a tactic that few will devise on their own. When dealing with the other side's representative, always keep in mind the fact that they are accountable to their constituents, and if they cannot convince them that their agreement was the right thing to do under the circumstances, they will likely be reticent and reject any deals you may offer. Helping them see the benefits for their constituents and helping them save face (or even gain respect) among their stakeholders will make agreement more likely (to say nothing of the benefits for both relationships).

In summary, begin with a firm, assertive Yes! Continue by asserting your interests and explain why you are not willing to accept unreasonable demands. Finish with a Yes?, and propose a reasonable solution that will lead to a win-win solution for all parties.

Another Paradigm Shifting Gem from Ury

I found this book by William Ury to be as groundbreaking and revolutionary as Ury's blockbuster hit "Getting to Yes." Ury makes the critical point that is better to say no than to accept a bad deal that will inevitably lead to future conflict. The best way to say no is thoroughly explored in this book and it is worth the time to read since saying no is such a sensitive subject to most relationships.

The Ury approach is to first articulate your needs, i.e. your yes, and to be able to explain how your needs are not being met by the bad deal. The next step is to say no is a way that is emphatic and to stick to your no so as not to cave to the other side's pressure. Finally, you then make a counter-proposal, i.e. your "yes," so as to preserve and continue the relationship. This "yes, no, yes" approach may sound simple but it is not.

Ury's books have been referred to me by several law professor over the years as part of my legal training. I have found Ury's books eminently practical yet paradigm shifting. I heartily recommend the power of a Positive No as well as all the other Ury books on negotiation.

Root your No in a deeper Yes

William Ury is the co-author of the well-known book Getting to YES. In this book he explains how he has come to realize that getting to yes is only half of the picture. Ury even says that "whether and how we say No determines the very quality of our lives." The reason is that word No is indispensible whenever you have to stand up for what really matters to you.Certain situations can create tension between an issue which is important to you and a relatinoship that is also important to you. This tension can make us fall into the three-A trap of Accomodation (saying yes when we mean No), Attacking (responding forcefully) and Avoiding (doing nothing at all). Ury presents the positive No as a way out. In short this means:

1. Yes! -> positively and concretely describing your core interests and values

2. No. -> explicitely link your no to this YES!

3. Yes? -> suggest another positive outcome or agreement to the other person

Ury goes into much detail about how to prepare, deliver, and follow through your positive No. His style of wrting is crystal clear and his examples are interesting. Some examples are probably very recognizable to many readers (like: how do you say to someone who wants to borrow money from you when you don't want to). Other examples are much grander (how to negotiate in an inter-ethnic conflict) and also interesting. The core idea of this book is very simple and very important. I was perhaps most interested to read Chapter 2 which explain the importance of a Plan B, which is your backup for your prefered outcome. I'll end this review with a quote by the great No-sayer Mahatma Gandhi (which is mentiond on page 7): "A `No' uttered from deepest conviction is better and greater than a `Yes' merely uttered to please or what is worse, to avoid trouble.

Disappointing Modernization of a Legend

In this graphic novel version of the legend of King Arthur from Tony Lee & Sam Hart, Arthur isn't just a regular mortal man, but instead is part fairy and is chosen by the good fairies to be King of Albion (England). However, his half-sister, Morgana, is taken by the evil fairies and raised in the black arts. She comes to despise Arthur and all that he stands for. Unlike many of the stories we read about Arthur, in this version he is fully aware of his familial lineage. However, he begins to doubt the existence of the wizard Merlin until Merlin appears just before Arthur sets off to face the evil King Ulrich. Merlin sends Arthur away to the good fairy realm of Albion where a year is as a few hours in Albion. While there, Arthur falls in love with Vivianne, the Lady of the Lake. He ends up staying in Avalon for two years before returning to face Ulrich in Albion, where only a day has passed. Thus begins Arthur's journey to becoming King.

I had been looking forward to reading EXCALIBUR: THE LEGEND OF KING ARTHUR. I enjoy the legends of King Arthur and was excited to see how this updated version would be. I was disappointed. I don't mind trying to update the stories of Arthur. However, EXCALIBUR does more than just update the stories. It changes the very essence of Arthur. Instead of the man who would be king, he becomes the fairy man that's destined to be king. The mystery (and humor) of some of the tales are explained away through faire knowledge (aka magic). Arthur's love for Guinevere and the betrayal of Lancelot and Guinevere are easily forgiven because in this version of the story, Guinevere was not really Arthur's true love. That's just one example of how the Arthur legends are distorted.

I was also disappointed by the artwork. I had seen Sam Hart's work in an earlier graphic novel, OUTLAW: THE LEGEND OF ROBIN HOOD. In that book, the illustrations were much too dark. The illustrations in EXCALIBUR are better than in OUTLAW and there isn't as much shadowing and dark colors as there was in that book. However, the expressions and physical positions of the characters in EXCALIBUR are bland, dull, and often emotionless. EXCALIBUR is supposed to be an exciting updating of the Arthur legends, but it's difficult to become excited about a story when one of the most exciting panels is seeing a withered Arthur after part of his "life force" has been taken from him by an evil fairy. There is so much more of the story, but the illustration don't do the story justice.

Overall, EXCALIBUR is a disappointing update of the King Arthur legends. The story suffers from giving the tale a fairy subplot and the actual graphic novel itself suffers from mediocre illustrations.

The once and future king

This graphic novel tells the tale of Arthur, as a boy living with Ector, until Arthur's death. Despite the title of Excalibur, the sword most think of as Excalibur is called Caliburn, in this version - the name the sword was known by in stories before the sword was called Excalibur. Excalibur comes in later on, in this story`s recounting.
There are many accounts of the legend of Arthur; most of this recounting concerns the faerie realm and not that of Camelot and Arthur`s rule is only touched upon. There are some elements and characters not well explained or transitioned into; but the story is sound. The love between Lancelot and Guinevere is included.
The illustrations are not colorful, more in monochromatic colours to depict moods and time of day.

Some versions of Arthur have been sanitized into Disney versions, this is not. It is not for the very young, but those who like to read varying versions of Arthur's story, especially that pertaining to the Land of Avalon, Morgana and the Faerie realm would enjoy this .

Good (but not perfect) version of the Legend in a wonderful format

This comic tells Arthur's story, from his dark origins to his final rest in the Faerie Realm of Avalon. The illustrations are very good, I love how each color had a diferent purpose: red/orange for the battle, violet/purple for supernatural scenes... The graphic aspect of this comic has 5 stars from my point of view. The narrative is also good, but weaker than other versions of the Arthurian Legend.

This is not a traditional version of the Arthurian Legend. Of course, some of the traditional subplots of this myth show up (the Sword in the Stone, the Green Knight, Lanncelot's love for Guinevere...) but a lot of them are slightly changed to create a good, solid story: for instance, it is not Merlin but the dark fairies of the Unseelie Court who change Uther into Gorlois, but when they ask for Igraine's child as a payment, Uther gives them his step-daughter Morgana Le Fey, who lives a horrible childhood with the Unseelie Court and will take revenge on Arthur and Merlin for this (say goodbye to Malory's story of Morgan learning magic in a nunnery). Some aspects should have been better developed (Mordred's hostility towards Arthur is clear, but in traditional accounts he's more treacherous and sibylline... And for all the Gods what happened to Igraine after Arthur's birth? Did she die or something?)
Of course some subplots are made up by the writers, for instance, Arthur's love for Vivianne (The Lady of the Lake, here she is different from Merlin's lover Nimue), Uther's death at the hands of his friend Ulric... But, in my opinion, the most innovative contribution is the idea thar behind Arthur's fight for Albion (that means Britain) there is an endless war between the good fairies of the Seelie Court (Vivianne, Nimue, Bran the Blessed... Supporters of Arthur) and the Unseelie (bad fairies, Morgana is their main representative). This last idea is very similar to The Mists of Avalon, where there is a struggle between the Christian Faith (Guinevere) and the Pagan British Religion (Vivianne and Morgana), but here we've got a Faerie War.

Overall, I must say that despite some little aspects (I didn't like when one of my fauvorite characters died) it is a good version of the Myth, under those capes of colour, magic and glamour lies the old story of love, war, friendship betrayed, hatred and, at the end, forgiveness. The story has more magic than ever, but it doesn't loose its humanity.
I give 5 stars to the graphic aspect, and 3.5 to the narrative... 4 stars, all in all.
