Board certified in addiction medicine, Ross is former chief of the eating disorders program at Sierra Tucson, an internationally acclaimed addiction treatment center in Tucson, AZ. She is currently in private practice in Denver, CO, and San Diego, CA, and is a consultant for the Integrative Life Center in Nashville, TN, and other eating disorder and chemical dependency treatment centers nationally. Logical and holistic guide book

I have struggled with compulsive overeating all my life. As a computer programmer, I have lived most of my life in my head. This is the first source of information I have ever run into that describes in very basic yet not patronizing terms, how to start living in your body and listening to its messages. It helps the reader identify their triggers and provides many suggestions for dealing with those triggers in ways other than turning to food. It also provides easy-to-understand nutritional information.

I found this book much more helpful than attending OverEaters Anonymous.

I would recommend this to anyone who wants a logical methodology for working with their food bad habits.

Everyone should read this book!

Upon first downloading this book I did know what to expect, nor did I have high hopes. I have struggled on and off with eating disorders since I was a child, but didn't recognise the cycle - which progressively got worse over the years. From the first chapter I was hooked; I wanted to know more about why I had such a dependence on food and how to turn my life around. Carolyn Ross explained exactly how to do that, with each chapter focusing on and exploring a different element while building a journey to self-discovery and healing.

Backed with research and many points of reference, this book is not only extremely credible but is also clear, concise and can be read page by page or all at once. The exercises are easy to follow [and insightful to behavioural issues], and this book really goes above and beyond in hitting the nail on the head. I will be keeping this book as a reference for years to come! Its practical wisdom is simple but extremely profound.

This isn't a book which will fix you - the hard work is yours to put in. But the great part is that Ross guides you [the reader] and leads you to find the strength within to overcome the battle you're facing. It's all about identifying the knowledge and tools that you already have and implementing them in new ways to get through your eating disorder.

I'll definitely be reading other writings from this author. :)

Loved it!

I just finished the book yesterday! I am a Health Coach by IIN and my target market are people who are struggling with metabolic syndrome. The book gave me wonderful tools on cognitive behavioral therapy, as well as other less conventional (such as the use of dietary supplements of complementary alternative medicine) to help my clients cope with the BED or OE. The book is really comprehensive and well organized, t lacks the motivational quotes that sometimes may become vague, and instead it focuses on doable and realistic steps towards the recovery process.

Jeffrey provides a modern, useful introduction to Partial Differential Equations with an emphasis on using the theory to solve current, real problems. Various applications leading to linear elliptic, parabolic and hyperbolic equations are considered in detail, together with the important
effects of nonlinearity in the case of hyperbolic equations and systems.

Foremost amongst the intriguing physical examples of the effects of nonlinearity in the hyperbolic case is how abrupt changes in pressure produced ahead of an aircraft in supersonic flight creates a shock wave, which is experienced by an observer on the ground as a sonic boom. Analogous phenomena are found in the study of water waves where hydraulic jumps can occur, in solids where shock waves can develop, in chromatography where an abrupt change in color or concentration occurs across an interface in fluid, and in many other practical situations.

did you know Reincarnation was in the original Christian doctrine

I found this book in a used book store. i was acquainted with the author having reading his books on mystic Christianity ( the secret doctrine of Jesus " where the author touches on the subject of reincarnation in Jesus words.) i really found it insightful . having being versed in reincarnation i did find some previously unexplored concepts .especially the part about animal reincarnation as dogs/horses/cows etc are one step before humans. maybe their next incarnation they will be human maybe not . its why im a vegetarian.
also biblical lines and quotes that prove the Hebrews knew of the doctrine and early Christianity as well . ( people thought Jesus and john the baptist were reincarnated versions of Elijah) Christians accepted it as gospel until the official catholic church put a end to it. . Although the idea survived in kaballah and some aspects of Islam as well .
One draw back ( and i find this in all his work) H spencer lewis is really "wordy" i always have a hard time reading him hes language and drawn out wordiness is hard to slough through its like trying to swim in molasses reading him at times. but its worth it for the gems.

You never can go wrong with a James Paterson Book

I am a mother of a 10 year old. I try to find books that will keep her intrested in reading. Personally I love any book from James Patterson for myself. Then when I saw he was writting a childs book I had to get it. I per-ordered it and got this book the day after it came out. My daughter can't put it down. She is laughing while reading and can't stop telling me about what is happening in the book. As a parent this is what you want for your young child or pre-teen. This is a most have and your kids will thank you.

Great Summer Read

I'm a middle school teacher. When I saw this advertised I just had to get it to see things from a kids perspective. VERY fast read. Funny as heck. I could actually put some faces (teachers, students, bus drivers, lunch ladies, etc) on the characters in this book. My daughter (high school student) is reading it now and laughing and talking about it to her friends...now if she'd only read her A.P. summer reading assignments...

Unique and Fast Moving

Starting middle school can be rough on anybody, but for Rafe Khatchadorian, the sixth grade escalates into an absolute nightmare. First of all, his middle school resembles an ancient, high security prison. Secondly, it's staffed with angry monsters, like the dragon lady who teaches English, the three witches in the cafeteria, the ogre gym teacher, and the principal named the Lizard King. Thirdly, there's a nine-foot-tall troll of a sixth grader called Miller the Killer who is out to get him.

Things aren't much better at home, with a bratty younger sister, a mom who works all the time, and a soon-to-be stepfather who sits around the house hogging the TV and is as much of a bully as Miller the Killer. At least Rafe has his best friend, Leo, who doesn't say much but has a great imagination. In fact, Leo is the one who gave him the best idea ever. To spice things up, Rafe creates a game with the goal of breaking every rule in the middle school's code of conduct handbook. He assigns points to each rule, with bonus points available for creativity, getting laughs and being witnessed by the cutest girl in the class, Jeanne Galletta.

Life definitely gets more exciting, but Rafe also starts spending a lot more time in detention, and his mom is very disappointed in him. Then the trouble and heartache start mounding up so heavily on Rafe's shoulders where even his best friend can't help much. When the police get called in, Rafe finally crumbles. Then he gets some help from a very unexpected someone, and life promises to continue being interesting, but in a different, more positive way.

James Patterson and Chris Tebbetts team up for this amazing adventure about one boy's attempt at surviving middle school. The first thing that stands out is how absolutely hilarious the book is. Rafe is a very likable character, and readers will love laughing along with him. His rule-breaking game is incredibly imaginative and dives headfirst into the danger zone again and again. Rafe does have to face the consequences of his actions, though he does attract the attention of someone who helps him find a way to work through his issues.

This unique and fast moving storyline also has a couple of surprise bombs dropped along the way that make it even more compelling. Also noteworthy are the intensely detailed illustrations of Laura Park. They support the story line as they are the work of Rafe's friend, Leo, plus they add even more humor to the story. Patterson, Tebbetts and Park make a great team, and the proof is right here in MIDDLE SCHOOL, THE WORST YEARS OF MY LIFE.

Q. What is your definition of globalization?
 
A. I see globalization as a historical process of interconnectedness that has shaped all of our lives. If we look under the hood of our daily existence, almost everything—from what we consume, wear or use to the music we listen to or the movies we enjoy—is the product of a long and complex historical journey.
 
Q. What do you say to people who tell you they are opposed to globalization?
 
A.  Growing interconnectedness has always brought pain in about equal measure to gain. For all its positive contributions, globalization has also brought war, slavery, displacement, and pandemics. But it is impossible to oppose the process of globalization, which is being driven by hundreds of millions of people from every walk of life.
 
Q. Of traders, preachers, adventurers, and soldiers, is there one group that has played a greater role in shaping the world today?
 
A. It is hard to assign a greater significance to any one of them. They are not independent from one another. Still, I would say that traders, who often moonlighted as preachers, adventurers, and soldiers, played the most significant role.
 
Q. Are there certain transition points in history that greatly facilitated globalization in its various forms?
 
A. There are many critical moments. But some of the most important revolve around transport and communications. For example, the discovery of the monsoon wind widened trade and human links between Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, just as the steam engine and electricity encouraged the growth of mechanized industrial production. Most recently, the development of the World Wide Web has "flattened" the world of global services and accelerated the transfer of ideas and information.
 
Q. What do you hope readers will take away from your book?
 
A. A sense of how closely all humans are related. From the cells in our bodies to the objects that are integral to our everyday existence, we are all connected by invisible threads that stretch across continents and millennia. For better or for worse, we are all the products of globalization.

Singing the praises of Globalization

Part economic history, part paen to increasing economic integration, Chandra has written a highly readable account and provided a good argument for just what the term "globalization" means.

Chandra begins at, well, the beginning - when mankind first walked out of Africa and began its dominance of the earth. The following chapters relate how the ensuing centuries brought these disparate cousins back together through trade, war and missionary work (to include, quite perceptively, the 20th century missionaries - the NGO community.)

Chandra is a proponent of the globalization process, and what he gets across in his book is that not only is this process generally positive one for humanity - it's something that has been going on for a long, long time. Basically since humans spread across the globe, we have had "globalization."

This may be a surprise to those who think that the revolution is coming. However, Chandra makes a good case that there is nothing particularly nefarious about globalization, and that, despite its rough edges (and he does not pull punches when discussing the downsides) globalization is the best opportunity for the global have-nots to better their plight.

A compelling narrative of the globalization process as something essentially human rather than an invention of 1980s bankers and computer scientists. Entertaining and informative glimpses into history is presented in such a way as to make it not feel too much like a textbook. Provides insight into current policy without being perscriptive or heavy-handed.

Bound Together is enthralling.

The chapters are succinct and the author has a global, over-reaching perspective that captivates the reader. I looked forward to reading it every night for a week. Bound Together surpassed my expectations. I initially ordered it along with three other books on similar topics about capitalism and globalization. I read the others first because I thought they would be better. However, Bound Together was the best of the bunch.

Clumsy and Annoying

This was very nearly a very good (if somewhat typical) urban fantasy novel. It has a great setup: a host of interesting characters working together - or not - in a dangerous and dangerously sexy world of magic and intrigue.

But.

But the protagonist telegraphs her every thought, and half of those thoughts are the kind of long-winded college-age angst and portentousness that makes you really hate first person POV. (The free sample provides a great example of this style if you want to see what I mean.) There were glimmers of a funny and smart personality under the surface, but they kept getting drowned out. Much worse, however, was that the protagonist couldn't hold her character for more than a few pages. She's smart, she's an idiot. She's empathetic, she's tone-deaf. She's curious, she's utterly uninterested in learning about the things going on around her. If she was changing because of the events of the story, that would be one thing, but instead it's the other way around: her personality shifts only so the author can wedge her into whatever stupid thing the plot demands of her this chapter.

And the plot ... Well, I'm not going to talk about the plot. I'm pretty sure that I wasn't supposed to understand the plot yet (because more will be revealed in the second book). Suffice it to say, I'm not only unsatisfied with that result, I'm bloody confused and annoyed.

And really that pretty much sums up my experience with this story. It was so close to being quite good, and instead it left me angry enough to spit. Unless you're in the mood for that, I can't recommend this book.

frustrating schizophrenic mess

One second Cassidy is planning her revenge. Moments later she is panting with desire. Suddenly, she is now enjoying a snarky moment with her imp.

There's good writing under this mess. An interesting world, clever conversations, and a solid 'plot'. Then the mess begins.

Truthfully, Cassidy SHOULD be mentally unstable. Her upbringing is chock full of disaster. But the book itself doubles down on the crazy, careening whirlwind by snapping between dark, gritty paranormal, lusty romance, and quirky chick-lit all on the same page.

It is almost as if the author wanted to write a different story every five minutes and just kept going in a bizarre stream of consciousness writing spree that fell down the stairs.

And I want to emphasize: I actually LIKED the characters and creatures. I LIKED the plot (when I could figure out which one to follow). But the plot PLUS the characters is a disaster.

Really disliked the main character

I had to really work to make it 25% into this book. Normally taking someone who is not familiar with something and having them introduced to that thing is a great way to introduce people to your world. However, this only works if the character being introduced to the new experience is actually open to learning about the world.

That's not the case here. Cassidy thinks she knows about the magical side of the world, but finds out at the beginning of the book that she's barely dipped a toe into the supernatural waters. However, due to the enormous chip on her shoulder, she's determined to be a one-woman army and refuses to let anyone know that she has no clue what's going on. This leads to her refusing to ask for information and refusing to allow anyone to give her information. This means that the reader doesn't really have any idea what's going on or why, which is really annoying.

She also willfully gets herself in trouble by refusing to admit that she has no clue what's going on. I enjoy reading about strong, independent main characters, but only when they've got the brains and skills to go along with the attitude.
