Thorough and Clear

This is an excellent book on RxJava. It takes you through creating Observers and Observables, wades through the jungle of operators, and takes you through real-world examples of how to build and retrofit your applications with Rx. The book has loads of code examples, but it explains the concepts behind the examples quite clearly. It even goes as far as showing benchmark results between traditional and reactive HTTP servers. I'm right in the middle of my first coding project using Rx and this book was a godsend.

Great buy

Awesome book, a must read for beginners, and novice RxJava'ers (-.-) It has a great introduction, good examples, and clears up a lot of information. I really enjoyed the flow of the book, how it introduces the concepts and how the chapters are designed. There are a couple of places where i had to do research online to better understand, but this book definitely gets you on the right track. It has cleared up a lot of questions i had about Rx.

Great intro to reactive programming in Java with plenty of deeper discussion on specific topics. While the book is written for RxJava, it seems to translate easily to other frameworks such as Project Reactor / Spring since they now share a common paradigm and core code.

Essential??? You Betcha!

IF you have pregnant cows or heifers you will be having calves. Isn't that the idea? Cows can be intimidating (even with our wee Irish Dexters) and you might think "they know what to do" but sometimes they need help. This book is excellent in helping you learn what is normal and what is not, what might go wrong and importantly- when to call for help.

Being a nurse-midwife, I have delivered 2-legged babes, but calving is new to me. It is easy to ask a person "do you feel pressure?" Try getting an answer from a cow... This book is wonderful at explaining the basics of bovine prenatal care, labor management and postpartum care. Keeping your cow healthy and having a healthy calf- these are the goals and both are met within the pages.

Even if you are a life-long cattleperson, this book will teach you something. It has to; it covers areas that the Thomas' have seen over their careers and some are pretty bizarre. Pictures and stories are heartwarming and informative. This book will give you the knowledge and confidence to help your calves and momma cows do great.

A great resource book for those who are new to life on the farm as I was. It answered so many of my questions and provided wonderful illustrations. A must-have for the novice calver...we have purchased many of her books and they are ALL great. Well written and illustrated so almost anyone can understand the content.

My wife and I had the crazy idea that we wanted to raise cattle so we bought a bred cow and a heifer. I have never owned cattle although I do own a few horses. The extent of my cattle experience was riding bulls "back in the day" but I never had to deal with calfs. Anyway the cow that we purchased was due anyday so we got this book along with Raising Beef Cattle so we could read up and know what to expect when the calf came along. Well one morning we woke up and had an extra little bull this book helped my wife by giving her a referance. We had no problems but we felt confident that with this book we would be able to face issues that might arise in the future.

Grade 6-9 This novel about the ill-fated queen covers her life from age 13 when, as an Austrian princess, she prepares to marry the French dauphin to her death by guillotine in 1793. The final section is told by her daughter Marie-Therese, the only family member to survive the Revolution. Meyer writes in a lighthearted, casual style, vividly portraying the historical era and aptly defining unfamiliar vocabulary. However, Marie-Antoinette's occasional sympathy for the poor and interest in politics is inconsistent with her flighty, self-indulgent character as presented in most of the book. (Frankly, she comes across as a total airhead.) In addition, after the first 100 pages, The Bad Queen turns into a speedy recitation of events, skipping through years at a time with little insight or development and little spark or personality from the narrators. Kimberley Brubaker Bradley's fascinating novel The Lacemaker and the Princess (S & S, 2007) features Marie-Therese and does an excellent job of integrating events leading up to the French Revolution with life at the palace of Versailles. Amazing

If you are interested in the lives and customs of royalty then you will love this book. It puts flesh and blood to the villian of the French Revolution. You understand her actions and even feel sympathetic for her after this book. The dialogue and interactions in this book are completely natural. I full heartedly reccomend and the seller was on time with the delivery and generous on the price.

Very good book, but with a sad ending.

The queen is a little naive about what shall be expected of her to goveren beside her husband. Even though she is not allowed to have any real political power, Louis still values Marie's opinion on everything. Of course, all of the people blame the queen for the problems they are facing and she is an easy scapegoat being that she has no limits on her spending. I do not understand why Marie could not see the dangers when it came to living a life this way when all of France was starving, except for the rich people. The story starts off fun with Marie having plenty of servents, rich fabrics for her wardrobe, and the enless instructions she must get use to. In this book court equatte plays an important part. The young queen decides to make up her own rules when she becomes queen. However, she is not aware of the warnings that come with being queen. She tries to curb her spending, but this does not satisfy the people. THEY WANT HER BLOOD AND NOTHING WILL SATISFY THEM! I love how the author makes the reader feel that Marie's life will be nothing but parties, thearter acting, and endless mindless gossip. We are swept up into her world of illisuions and it all comes crashing down when the monarachy is abolished. No more kings and queens for France. They want a republic now. Marie looses her servants, status as queen, husband, what little power she had, children, and eventually her head. The same fate happens for her husband as well.

ON a strange note, the story picks up with her daughter. I found this interesting being that Marie's daughter has a story of her own. She eventually tells the tragic end to her mother's life. But she escapes with her freedom, married, but becomes a wanderer throughout her entire life. She is made Queen of France, along with her husband, but only for half an hour. Seeing what happened to her parents, I do not believe being Queen of France is something that the young princess looked forward to.

Carolyn Meyer uses a clever technique for each chapter in this retelling of the Marie Antoinette story. Each chapter begins with "Rules and Instructions" she must learn in order to become the proper Queen of France. She never quite gets it, however and you know what happens. The author thoroughly entertains with her lovely writing style. The poor doomed king and queen are sympathetic, three dimensional characters. Excellent read.

About the Author
Larry J. Siegel was born in the Bronx in 1947. While living on Jerome Avenue and attending City College of New York (CCNY) in the 1960s, he was swept up in the social and political currents of the time. He became intrigued with the influence contemporary culture had on individual behavior: Did people shape society or did society shape people? He applied his interest in social forces and human behavior to the study of crime and justice. After graduating from CCNY, he attended the criminal justice program at the State University of New York at Albany, earning his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees there. Dr. Siegel began his teaching career at Northeastern University and has also held teaching positions at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire, and in the School of Criminology and Justice Studies at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell (UML). Now a Professor Emeritus, he continues to teach courses on criminology and criminal justice in UML'S online master's degree program. Dr. Siegel has written extensively in the area of crime and justice, including books on juvenile law, delinquency, criminology, corrections, criminal justice, and criminal procedure. He is a court certified expert on police conduct and has testified in numerous legal cases.

Very Satisfied

I loved this book. It was easy to read and the concepts were understandable. The information was relevant to today and the examples were on events that happened recently. When I say recently I mean that the examples they use are dated past the 1900s. Since my criminology class was online, my teacher made us read a chapter and then have us take a test. Usually I have trouble with reading something without the professor explaining the topic. That was not the case with this book. There were very concise explanations that were easy to digest. Textbooks that I have used in the past are crammed with so much information that you can’t get the main point from them. More textbooks should be like this one.

I purchased the used version of this book. When dealing with used books, generally I always get the ones that have markings in them from the previous user. This was not the case when I opened this book. It seemed like it was practically untouched. It almost looked as if it was brand new. The book’s cover looked fine as well. There was a bend in mine but it did not matter. The inside contents were unharmed and readable.

The price for it was excellent too! If you are required to get a copy, get it here. It will save you a very good amount of money if you purchase the book here. It was cheaper than the other place I was about to get it from. Even if you are not taking a course in criminology, this book is still a good read for those interested in this topic. It was a good read and I actually learned something from it. I rarely say that about a textbook so take my word for it.

Kindle Edition was distracting.

I was really excited about purchasing this textbook on my Kindle Fire. I found the ease of transport to be a top consideration. However, the novelty soon wore off for me. This may be just a quirk for me but I found the formatting for the digital edition to be distracting. My guess is that the hard copy is formatted with a central column of text and side margins for vocabulary and key points, I don't know for sure, I haven't actually looked at a physical textbook. I found that in the digital edition the key points, vocabulary, and photographs would sometimes be tossed into the text in the middle of the paragraph which for me was distracting and made me lose my train of thought and I would often read the insert and then have to backtrack and re-read the few sentences before and skip the inserted text to maintain the flow of the content. I think from now on I will stick to pleasure reads for my Kindle and continue to buy/rent hard copy textbooks.

A Courageous Mother - a Brilliant, Tender Remembering

An amazing story - an amazing mother - an amazing book. For those of us who have survived the horror and pain of domestic violence, only to face a justice system that routinely turns a blind eye to victims, this book is refreshing, tender and honest. Our justice system allows men with greater status, power and money get off with no accountability. This is the pain a domestic violence victim lives with everyday. It is the same pain June Steenkamp details in this account. We all know what a shockingly commonplace crime domestic violence is against women, and yet police, defense lawyers, judges, prosecutors and courts still dismiss and minimize it. Reeva Steenkamp had a beautiful brilliant mind that was lost to a controlling, and explosive man whose raging behavior predicted her horrible end. Oscar Pistorious tried to convince the public to take pity on him for being prosecuted. This book is a testament that the horrible reality for domestic victims - that our voices so frequently drowned out by the money and loud proclamations of our abuser's innocence will finally be heard.

Beautifully written and true in every single sense of what ...

I echo Liz Parr's review totally, she said it word for word exactly as I would have written my review. I bought it yesterday at midday and could not put it down till I had finished reading it last night. Beautifully written and true in every single sense of what happened, the trial, the verdict and the sentencing. I always knew the NPA would appeal if the verdict was less then murder, Gerrie Nel has been the voice of the silenced lamb, I have every ounce of faith that the shocking verdict will be overturned - Judge Masipa made a terrible mistake, for whatever reason we will never apprehend. I always knew, from the moment the tragic news broke on the morning of 14 February 2013 that he was guilty.
If you read this review June, the feathers you are finding is no coincidence - that is Reeva talking to you, telling you she is with you.
I beg you, as parents, to know she is with you in spirit, she does not want you to be torn apart - as Mrs Ntlangu said so poignantly "We in the world want the cream. God also wants the cream in Heaven."
My love and thoughts are with you as parents, who showed such dignity and composure during the trial - you won the hearts of the world. And your book is confirmation of the truly wonderful, dignified, classy and sincere people you are. RIP darling Reeva.
Justice WILL prevail.

Poignant.

I followed every minute of this horrible crime as a spectator. I was affected by this case and
I admire June's composure during the trial. What an example of dignity and courage,
