Vision & Voice: Refining Your Vision in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom (Voices That Matter), by David duChemin

What if your image could only communicate one thing: one major idea, overarching theme, or driving emotion? If you identified this, you’d discover your vision for that image—the internal, invisible guiding principle that directs both how you capture the image and how you develop it in the digital darkroom.
Without vision, you likely find yourself flailing both behind the camera and in front of the computer—indiscriminately shooting and arbitrarily moving sliders in hopes of stumbling upon something great every once in a while. With vision, you bring direction and intention to both the creation and development of all your images.

Vision & Voice: Refining Your Vision in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom is about identifying your vision and using Lightroom’s Develop module to give voice—that outward expression—to your vision. Photographer David duChemin begins with the fundamentals of a vision-driven workflow, where he discusses everything from vision and style, to the importance of mood and color, to the crucial role of histograms and of getting the best possible digital negative to work with. After demonstrating how the Develop module’s tools affect the aesthetics of your image, duChemin then offers a straightforward approach to developing your images in accordance with your own personal vision: identify your intention, minimize the distractions, maximize the mood, and draw the viewer’s eye—all while leaving room for play and serendipity. Finally, duChemin applies this approach to 20 of his photographs as he takes you into his own digital darkroom and, beginning with the original RAW file, works step by step through the development of the final image.

“David duChemin’s images of people and landscapes never feel posed or artificial. There is a dignity and intimacy to his portraits of people living in impoverished conditions...This book is highly recommended for photographers seeking to refine their voice and style.”

Photography as Art
By Conrad J. Obregon
Most of the books about using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop explain to a greater or lesser degree what the sliders, buttons and menus do to change the look of an image, but most don't try to tell you how to put together these effects to create an artistic picture. This is David duChemin's goal in "Vision & Voice: Refining Your Vision in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom".

The book starts out with a few chapters devoted to explaining what the author means by vision and voice. He says that every photograph really contains three images: the one the author had in mind when he took the picture, the one captured by the camera and the one created in post processing. He then goes on to discuss a vision-driven workflow, emphasizing intention, aesthetics, and process. He lays out a few principles next, like making blacks black, utilizing the histogram and even shooting in raw. He then discusses each of the tools in the develop module of Lightroom, but rather then give you a technical explanation, he offers his ideas about how those tools can contribute to the photographer achieving his or her vision. He finishes the book with twenty of his own images (much like Ansel Adams, in "Examples: The Making of 40 Photographs") in which he provides step by step descriptions of how he used Lightroom to transform those images into what he envisioned. There are copies of the images on-line that one can download to follow duChemin as he works the digital captures.

If you are one of those photographers who is interested in images that look as much like what was before your lens as possible, this probably isn't the book for you, although from my point of view, this book is probably just what you need. But if you are interested in creating (dare I say it) art, you must read this book.

As I read this book, I felt like I was watching a high-wire artist. So many authors say they will tell you how to be creative, and then end up explaining exposure and focus, but losing sight of the creativity. I kept waiting for duChemin to fall into the same trap, but he kept his footing all the way. Even when he told you that he had set, say, clarity to +90, I understood the artistic purpose of the move.

If you are familiar with Lightroom, you can just read the author's description of how he processed each picture. However, even skilled photographers will benefit from following along with the downloaded images.

This book will also prove useful to Photoshop users since the Adobe Camera Raw engine is the same as the Lightroom engine, although the latter has a more intuitive interface.

A great critic, Mark Schorer, spoke of technique as discovery, indicating that it was through the application of technique that the artist revealed his or her vision. David duChemin demonstrates the principle in this book.

Five star plus, if you're ready for it
By Stephen Kalman
First, a warning. This is NOT a book that goes into every menu and submenu in Lightroom and explains what the sliders do. If you want that kind of book, try the latest from Scott Kelby or Deke McLelland or a variety of others.

Next, a threat. If you bought this book thinking it was an item by item how to, and then trash it online, I'm going to break a chain letter rather than send it on to you and you'll have 7 years bad luck. Seriously, though. If this isn't what you thought it was when you bought it, return it or sell it. That wouldn't be the book's fault.

Finally, the gold star review...

DuChemin has several titles that talk about vision and voice. Many of them are very inexpensive eBooks available on his website,[...]. It's taken me about a year to understand what he's saying. I've got the voice part down, thanks to this book. When you see a picture from Ansel Adams or Anne Liebowitz, you don't need to see the signature to know who took it. In other creative genres, when you read about a hard-boiled detective, you know it is Hammet or not. Same with Monet or Picasso. They all have a voice.

Vision is a little harder to explain. When you take a picture, there was something that made you choose what to include or leave out, something that drew you to put camera to eye, something you wanted to capture. When you begin post processing, that initial view is rarely what you had in your mind. Vision is taking the image and making it tell the story you intended to tell, the way you wanted to tell it.

The first third of this book tries to explain both of these complimentary concepts in much more detail and in a much clearer manner than I've done here. (And with apologies to the author if I've messed it up; these aren't easy to define in a few words.)

After that, David takes you through his process, starting with a zeroed image (the RAW file from the camera) and explains what he did and why he did it from before he clicked the shutter to the moment he was ready to print. You do get to see sliders and adjustment brushes, but you see them in action; in context.

As David goes on to explain the process of realizing his vision (and by extension, as we readers use the concepts and techniques to realize ours) he talks about how people process images. He has a ten point bulleted list of what the eye goes to first. Things like Sharp before soft, warm colors before cool, etc. Then he writes a sentence that sums it all up, "This is the WHY of this book: understanding how to gently lead the eye through the image, to say to your viewer, 'Look here,' and to do them the courtesy of creating images that don't tire them out from the effort to discern important elements from unimportant ones."

If you are at a stage where you can benefit from guidance on how to make better pictures, as opposed to how to simply better exercise the features of your camera and software then this book is for you.

For me, it came at just exactly the right spot on my learning curve. More than that, when I read it again next year it will provide a second boost since I'll be able to absorb ideas that are still beyond my ability.

This book has my highest recommendation.

Ambitious in vision... brilliant in execution
By Dane Sanders
In my experience, books in the creative professions either have a bias toward the technical or the philosophical. It's clear which side of that continuum is more popular these days. It seems that the demand for "how to" is at an all time high... which is understandable given how much there is to learn how to use. That said, the "why" questions really ought to come first but at the pace the photo world is running, it doesn't seem that there's room for inconveniences like finding a personal vision and expressing a unique voice.

Then, along comes duChemin with this gift: a philosophically driven, technically sound book on putting Adobe's Photoshop Lightroom in its appropriate place... behind the artists vision... as instrumental for expressing one's voice. The technique isn't the end with this work... it's the means.

At first, I was nervous at the scope of ambition this book took on. But, in the end, the author does not disappoint. Making the case for placing vision central but then giving technical insight on what, when and how demystifies Lightroom as a tool while giving context to why its function can so ably serve its master... namely, the creative wielding that tool.

This is both an inviting book for the new photographer and reframe for those of us who've been at it for a while. I was genuinely inspired as I read and was moved to see my world a little differently because of it. More than inspiration though, it went one critical step further and offered me what I needed to more ably make good on my new dreams thanks to Adobe's powerful tool (the unsung hero in this review).

I believe this is the third book penned for photographers by deChemin. I hope he's just getting started though. When it comes to vision and voice, he's certainly found his. That said, I believe his legacy will be in how he empowers an industry to go further still.

This is a brilliant work and I highly recommend it.

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars.

Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there.

After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive.

Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?

8 Tips for Surviving on Mars from Andy Weir

So you want to live on Mars. Perhaps it’s the rugged terrain, beautiful scenery, or vast natural landscape that appeals to you. Or maybe you’re just a lunatic who wants to survive in a lifeless barren wasteland. Whatever your reasons, there are a few things you should know:

1: You’re going to need a pressure vessel.

Mars’s atmospheric pressure is less than one percent of Earth’s. So basically, it’s nothing. Being on the surface of Mars is almost the same as being in deep space. You better bring a nice, sturdy container to hold air in. By the way, this will be your home forever. So try to make it as big as you can.

2: You’re going to need oxygen.

You probably plan to breathe during your stay, so you’ll need to have something in that pressure vessel. Fortunately, you can get this from Mars itself. The atmosphere is very thin, but it is present and it’s almost entirely carbon dioxide. There are lots of ways to strip the carbon off carbon dioxide and liberate the oxygen. You could have complex mechanical oxygenators or you could just grow some plants.

3: You’re going to need radiation shielding.

Earth’s liquid core gives it a magnetic field that protects us from most of the nasty crap the sun pukes out at us. Mars has no such luxury. All kinds of solar radiation gets to the surface. Unless you’re a fan of cancer, you’re going to want your accommodations to be radiation-shielded. The easiest way to do that is to bury your base in Martian sand and rocks. They’re not exactly in short supply, so you can just make the pile deeper and deeper until it’s blocking enough.

4: You’re going to need water.

Again, Mars provides. The Curiosity probe recently discovered that Martian soil has quite a lot of ice in it. About 35 liters per cubic meter. All you need to do is scoop it up, heat it, and strain out the water. Once you have a good supply, a simple distillery will allow you to reuse it over and over.

5: You’re going to need food.

Just eat Martians. They taste like chicken.

6: Oh, come on.

All right, all right. Food is the one thing you need that can’t be found in abundance on Mars. You’ll have to grow it yourself. But you’re in luck, because Mars is actually a decent place for a greenhouse. The day/night cycle is almost identical to Earth’s, which Earth plants evolved to optimize for. And the total solar energy hitting the surface is enough for their needs.

But you can’t just grow plants on the freezing, near-vacuum surface. You’ll need a pressure container for them as well. And that one might have to be pretty big. Just think of how much food you eat in a year and imagine how much space it takes to grow it.

Hope you like potatoes. They’re the best calorie yield per land area.

7: You’re going to need energy.

However you set things up, it won’t be a self-contained system. Among other things, you’ll need to deal with heating your home and greenhouse. Mars’s average daily temperature is -50C (-58F), so it’ll be a continual energy drain to keep warm. Not to mention the other life support systems, most notably your oxygenator. And if you’re thinking your greenhouse will keep the atmosphere in balance, think again. A biosphere is far too risky on this scale.

8: You’re going to need a reason to be there.

Why go out of your way to risk your life? Do you want to study the planet itself? Start your own civilization? Exploit local resources for profit? Make a base with a big death ray so you can address the UN while wearing an ominous mask and demand ransom? Whatever your goal is, you better have it pretty well defined, and you better really mean it. Because in the end, Mars is a harsh, dangerous place and if something goes wrong you’ll have no hope of rescue. Whatever your reason is, it better be worth it.

From Booklist
Remember Man Plus, Frederik Pohl’s award-winning 1976 novel about a cyborg astronaut who’s sent, alone, to Mars? Imagine, instead, that the astronaut was just a regular guy, part of a team sent to the red planet, and that, through a series of tragic events, he’s left behind, stranded and facing certain death. That’s the premise of this gripping and (given its subject matter) startlingly plausible novel. The story is told mostly through the log entries of astronaut Mark Watney, chronicling his efforts to survive: making the prefab habitat livable and finding a way to grow food, make water, and get himself off the planet. Interspersed among the log entries are sections told from the point of view of the NASA specialists, back on Earth, who discover that Watney is not dead (as everyone assumed) and scramble together a rescue plan. There are some inevitable similarities between the book and the 1964 movie Robinson Crusoe on Mars, but where the movie was a broad sci-fi adventure, the novel is a tightly constructed and completely believable story of a man’s ingenuity and strength in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. Riveting. --David Pitt

I'm a hard-science science fiction fan and would rather read hard sc-fi than almost anything. I love stories and movies about Mars, and I'm a fan of survival, castaway, and man-against-the elements stories. I loved Robinson Crusoe, so it should not surprise you that I loved the movie, Robinson Crusoe on Mars. I realize it's not Academy Award material, but to me, it's everything I want it to be, as was this book, The Martian.

The main character, Watney, presumed dead, is accidentally left by his crew mates when an intense Martian dust storm forces them to abort their mission. What follows for part of the book is a logbook style narrative that describes in great technical detail Watney's efforts to extend his life until the next scheduled mission arrives in 4 years. After reading just the first 20% of the book (my Kindle has no page numbers) one can't help but be impressed by the author's depth of knowledge in this regard. In fact, the entire book is an astronaut's primer on extraterrestrial and deep space survival and rescue.

The Martian isn't without its typos and editorial glitches, and I'm not sure if this was a result of a bad Kindle conversion or just a shortsighted editor. For me, though, typos and editing issues paled in comparison to the snowballing storyline, which I gladly admit is not for everyone.

This is not a touchy-feely book about love, romance or relationships. There is no overpowering angle between characters. No good guys in white hats and bad guys in black hats. There's no room for cliches. It's all very business like and scientific. So, if you're looking for Twilight in Space. Or Fifty Shades of Mars. Or Tom Hanks making himself a friend by drawing a face on a soccer ball, you'll probably want to skip this one. This book is simply about the mission, and the cold reality of working hard to turn a wrong into a right.

Another thing you won't find in this book is a lot of heartfelt reminiscing or reflection. There are no flashbacks of our main character fishing with Dad at the old water hole, or him riding his first bicycle without training wheels. This is a book about a guy with a keen intellect surviving on a hostile planet and doing so by making the most out of a given set of resources.

About a third of the way through the book, the author adds third person narratives from mission control and the Hermes space craft, the latter manned by the crew that left our hero behind -- and make no mistake, hero is the operative word. Again, we don't follow our mission control cast of characters back too their respective homes and meet their wives and husbands and get served up cliche insights into their innermost thoughts. Blech! I hate those stories! Which doesn't mean these characters are cookie cutter or superficial. On the contrary, I found the characters sufficiently individuated and interesting.

I highly recommend this book to people who are into reading hard sci-fi of the not-too-distant future, sci-fi without blasters and ray guns or 9' tall aliens that bleed acid. (Btw, I like those stories, too, but good ones are hard to find.)

Somebody did their homework on this one -- and that's what stands out above all else.

Engaging Read with Suspense and Humor
By AJL
The Martian is probably one of the best books I have read in years. Andy Weir does a great job painting the picture of what it would be like to be stranded on Mars after your crew thinks you died in a massive storm and trying to figure out a way to return home knowing it takes months to get a ship to Mars and over 12 minutes just to send a message. While there are a few slow parts, the pace of the book overall is quick and engaging with the main character being sharp-witted, comedic and intelligent. I also like the fact that the author did much of the verified calculations and formulas himself as well as research about the martian environment. If you haven't read it, do yourself a favor and get it!

A Promising First Novel
By J. Edgar Mihelic, MBA
I’m usually of the mind that I will like science fiction, but the burden of world building is such that it is so hard to get right that very few people do. The further out you push your plot, the more you have to explain, or at the very least, you have to know as background of the story you are telling. Weir solves that problem by making the world he talks about one that is very much like the contemporary world but with Martian missions. There’s relatively few time markers that I noticed –one of the crew on the ship that we meet has a collection of 70s music and sitcoms, so it can’t be so far that they are utterly dated. Or not. Like I said, there are very few time markers.

What the book is is mainly the log of Mark Watney, who is a member of the third Mars mission. He is both a botanist and a mechanical engineer. After a freak accident, the rest of his crew leaves him on the Martian surface, thinking he was dead. The rest of the book is about how Watney tries to survive and the rescue efforts taken by NASA to retrieve him. Overall, it is an interesting book, and it was an easy read.

There are some issues, though. The bulk of the book is told through these logs he is inputting, and it tries to capture Watney’s personality, but they have the same sort of issues that everything written in epistolary form have – not all of the situations have a logical reason to explain why this person would be sitting down and explaining to whomever what happened in such detail. This is even stronger in the beginning, where there seems to be no hope, as he has been left for dead. There are additional problems with characterization. Watney’s first words in the book, as related to the log, is an F-Bomb. My first reaction to the character was that he didn’t come across as a super educated astronaut scientist. It took a while to really get a sense of the character’s voice, as for a huge chunk of the time; he is the narrator, inputting his logs.

A problem for me was structural. There was the log entry format, but then Weir slipped into a traditional third past omniscient for scenes at NASA and in the ship that his former crew occupied. It was as if he started in in the log format, but then he realized he wanted scenes off the surface of Mars and had to figure out a way to make that work. It doesn’t. If I were workshopping this, I would tell Weir that that was a point that needed work. He could have lost the log-entry structure and not lost any narrative urgency.

There is a further problem with characterization. Watney works alone, but I didn’t believe any of the relationships. At the beginning, as he was explaining through the log structure the other characters I didn’t feel any real warmth or depth of the relationship between these people who supposedly had spent a lot of time together. Even later, that never really developed for me. I was at first under the impression that Mark was an outsider for some reason, which was so under-worked. There’s also the problem that every one of the crew had like two doctorates, thus Watney was both a mechanical engineer and a botanist. It can be handwaved, but it is very important for the plot. Thus, it feels like a little much, like a super-hero with no weaknesses.

This leads into the narrative issues, in that so much of what Watney does is over explained. It goes back to the world building aspect. The author needs to know all this stuff to make the world work, but once he starts explaining everything it is too much for me. It made me think of that sort of dialogue in TV shows where once character says, “Run this through the GLC,” and the other replies, “You mean the gas-liquid chromatography machine?” And as a viewer, you know it’s just to tell the viewers what they talking about because they already know. It’s worse when they then go and explain the mechanism. Weir explains the mechanism.

I don’t point out all the flaws to be too critical. This is still a very well paced book that builds tension and makes you think how you would act if left behind on a Mars mission. The action builds and resolves and it is entirely satisfying. I’m just critical because of all that it is implies all that it could be, but it is not. I know I’ll watch for Weir’s next book with anticipation.

Partial Differential Equations: Basic Theory (Texts in Applied Mathematics), by Michael E. Taylor

Mathematics is playing an ever more important role in the physical and biological sciences, provoking a blurring of boundaries between scientific disciplines and a resurgence of interest in the modem as weIl as the classical techniques of applied mathematics. This renewal of interest, both in research and teaching, has led to the establishment of the series: Texts in Applied Mathematics (TAM). The development of new courses is a natural consequence of a high level of excitement on the research frontier as newer techniques, such as numerical and symbolic computer systems, dynamical systems, and chaos, mix with and reinforce the traditional methods of applied mathematics. Thus, the purpose of this textbook series is to meet the current and future needs of these advances and encourage the teaching of new courses. TAM will publish textbooks suitable for use in advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate courses, and will complement the Applied Mathematical Sci ences (AMS) series, which will focus on advanced textbooks and research level monographs.

Great PDE book
By Ian Langmore
I like this book. Right from the beginning, Taylor uses concepts from smooth manifold theory to obtain results in a coordinate free fashion (on a Riemannian/Lorenz manifold) when possible. At the same time, he will go to coordinates when necessary, or even revert to R^n when stronger results are possible there. As an added "bonus" the book contains surprisingly few errors, or at least I found less than usual, so maybe I'm getting slow!

I didn't find this to be an introductory (as in first year of grad school) level book. The proofs are often given in less detail than those found in the standard introductory graduate texts. Reading and understanding this text requires knowledge of Real Analysis and smooth manifolds/differential geometry at the introductory graduate level. Fourier transforms and distributions are built up from scratch, but the treatment is quick and probably assumes you have some previous knowledge. Note that my opinion is formed after using this book for self-study, so you can probably relax the prerequisites slightly if this book is used as part of a course.

Another point worth mentioning is that the exercises are often quite easier than verifying the individual proofs in the chapter.

Why not 5 stars? I found the book and chapter introductions to be quite uninspiring and not very useful. He essentially lists off the material that will be covered with no thought to motivation. I like to read something about why one particular approach is necessary or better or just different than another approach. Simply listing off concepts to be covered has little meaning if one has no idea what those concepts mean! The discussion of results is also rather sparse, sort of like Rudin.

In middle school, nothing is more important than friendship.

When Truly is invited to sit at the Popular Table with the group she has dreamed of joining, she can hardly believe her luck. Everyone seems so nice, so kind to one another. But all is not as it seems with her new friends, and soon she's caught in a maelstrom of lies, misunderstandings, accusations and counter-accusations, all happening very publicly in the relentless, hyperconnected social media world from which there is no escape.

Six eighth-graders, four girls and two boys, struggle to understand and process their fractured glimples into one another's lives as they find new ways to disconnect, but also to connect, in Rachel Vail's richest and most searching book.

    From School Library Journal
Gr 6–9—When Truly is invited to the popular table by her former best friend, Natasha, she is excited to finally get a chance at the "in" crowd. Unsure if she is really accepted by them, she worries about doing and saying the wrong thing. Popular Natasha is torn between being a good friend to Truly and being jealous of the attention that she gets. Meanwhile, Hazel, Truly's current best friend, who is decidedly unpopular and anti-popularity, is hurt and angry at being abandoned by her friend. She seeks revenge by hacking into all of Truly's online accounts. The addition of social media amplifies each snub, misunderstanding, and deliberate meanness. Although the characters' interactions may, at first glance seem melodramatic, it is a realistic portrayal of middle school life. Truly is depicted as a complex young adult, not a single-minded social climber, while Natasha's mean streak is the obvious product of questionable parenting. The other characters are multidimensional; they have struggles and worries, and are not the flat, stereotypical popular kids that are sometimes portrayed YA novels. As these young people navigate the already awkward world of middle school, the fact that accusations, rumors, and lies are made public for the world to see make adolescent mistakes much more grave. A solid choice that will ignite meaningful discussion.—Patricia Feriano, Our Lady of Mercy School, Potomac, MD

What I'd Tell My Middle-School Self
    By Sarah Ross
I've loved Rachel Vail books since I was a teenager, and even now several years later I find her insights just as achingly true. The hilarious and hideous realities of middle school, of being a girl who wants to be good, clever, fun, and popular and who finds that sometimes those things aren't compatible, are all -- as usual -- perfectly rendered. Mostly I loved this because it takes how it *feels* to be a young woman seriously, and it looks at the great ways social media helps your life, and the many ways it makes it so much more complicated. Great gift for sisters, cousins, and those other girls in your life who you want to encourage to be the best, most compassionate version of themselves.

This smart, witty writer sure knows her middle schoolers
    By stacy
This smart, witty writer sure knows her middle schoolers! As a mom of three, with one still in middle school, I HIGHLY recommend this book. Great conversation starter with realistic themes. Great way to bring up the hard issues without being too serious. A fun read for parents and kids!!

Great read about friendships and the dynamics of "mean girls"
    By Kelli Nash
Unfriended was a great read. It really took me back, way back, to my own middle school years. That feeling of not fitting in, and so desperately wanting to, is something that's hard to forget.

So it was with great empathy that I understood Truly's situation. On a whim, one of the popular girls invites her to sit at their table for lunch. Truly turns her back on her best friend Hazel to join the "it" crowd. And Hazel doesn't really take the rejection well.

What follows is a story of friendship, both real and imagined, bullying, and redemption. I liked the way Vail resolved the conflict and felt that Unfriended accurately portrayed the friendship dynamics of middle school.

Unfriended was a fast read, and is not to be missed. One of my favorite lines from the book comes towards the end when Natasha says to her mother:

"'You make me hate myself, and then it's like, all I am is hate. All I have, all I can put out there into the world is hate.'" --- Unfriended, page 269

When I read that passage, I found myself tearing up. This is why girls can be so mean to each other. It all comes from their own damaged self-esteem, and often stems from their relationships with their mothers. It was a powerful realization, especially for a middle grade novel.

I really enjoyed Unfriended and would definitely recommend it.
