So far the best Allergy Cookbook I've come across!

I have a 16 month old son who has multiple allergies, mostly non-lifethreatening, but suffers from extreme hives, eczema and psychological irritation if any wheat, dairy, eggs, soy, treenuts, artificial colors, perservatives, and pesticides are ingested.

I have nursed my son, and discovered his allergies early when he was 2 months old, but couldn't pinpoint what they were exactly, and went through a lot of stuggles trying to help my son. I finally discovered I needed to do and elimination diet for myself in order to find out what foods I ate affected him. I understand your pain and suffering, emotionally and physically if you going through similar trials & are searching for answers.

Most other "allergy" cookbooks I've read so far will just make you omit a bunch of the "off-limits" ingredients from a normal recipe, and that pretty much eliminated most of the recipes in those cookbooks for my son & I to consume. This one actually gives you alternative ingredients to replace the off-limit ingredients! I'm excited about trying these recipes, once the ingredients I've ordered arrive (Gluten Free Mall: [...]) has products you can purchase online, and has been a great source!)

Best cookbook for the traditional items your are craving

I was very pleased with this cookbook, seeing recipes for things that I have been missing since being sensitive to numerous foods. Very comprehensive & helpful. Each basic recipe (lemon bread, etc) has several alternatives to create a different dish (like adding poppy seeds & making into muffins). The brownies were awesome & so was the pumpkin bread. The "Magical one-bowl muffins" are also great with 20 different variations for savory or sweet. Blueberry pancakes were great too!
I have a grain mill which makes these recipes very easy for me to make. I have whole grains/beans that I grind to make the flour. They have a suggestion for an all-purpose flour mix, which I make a double batch & keep in the freezer. I can whip everything up in a flash. Can you tell I'd been craving breads?
I haven't tried many other recipes yet. I also haven't read the first half of the book, which is information that I am already familiar with.
Another good book is the gluten-free vegan.
This book is HIGHLY recommended! I give it 5 stars, but the option is stuck on 4 stars.

This book is wonderful! I bought one for myself and one for a friend. She has some food allergies even worse than mine. We are both using it! It doesn't just cover the question,"what if I eat the wrong foods?", but it also covers the "how to not eat the wrong food and still feel like you've eaten something". I'm very glad I got it.

Gilbert strikes a playful and conversational tone, but make no mistake, this is all straight talk. Her no-BS attitude helps do away with the unrealistic expectations and unnecessary melodrama attached to the concept of “creative living” (like how she so expertly pish-poshes the "tormented artist" ideal). And in its place, she asks all people who feel called to create (writers, painters, musicians, ice skaters, WHATEVER) to quietly and joyfully accept their creative inclinations and ideas as gifts from the universe. She reminds them to approach their creativity with curiosity and openness, with playfulness and joy—even when it’s tough, even when there is no Pulitzer, no bestseller list, no Olympic medal, no call from the Met. Own that creativity, she encourages. Also, stay light with it.

This was the message I (apparently) desperately needed to hear. I’m a stay-at-home mom with three young children. And when people ask me what I do, that is what I always tell them. But that isn’t what I want to tell them. What I want to tell them—what I want to shout from the rooftops, in fact—is that I’m a writer. Sure, barely anyone reads what I write, I’ve never been published, and it probably goes without saying that I’ve never been paid for a single sentence. In other words, no one really gets anything out of my work but me. But I love it, straight up. So I keep writing, regardless.

Yet it feels weird to declare yourself “A Something!” when that something doesn’t earn you money or status or likes or hits or retweets. Which means even though this side-passion feels so authentically “me,” I hide it so people won’t think I’m a loser, an imposter, a wannabe, an embarrassment, a failure…and the list goes on.

I guess this reality had been bumming me out more than I realized, because when I read the following words, they resonated with me in an unimaginably powerful and loving way--like I was receiving a cosmic hug:

“Shake yourself free of all your cumbersome ideas about what you require in order to become ‘creatively legitimate’… You do not need a permission slip from the principal’s office to live a creative life. Or if you do worry that you need a permission slip—THERE, I just gave it to you… Now go make something.”

In other words, Gilbert’s message is this: accept that you need to create. Accept that this is a part of you, that you are ALREADY “creatively legitimate.” And just do what you naturally feel compelled to do. Do it with joy—even when it gets difficult—and don’t worry about how it will be received (if it’s received at all). If you are called to be a maker, then you will just have to make. Own who you are, for better or worse.

So that’s what I’m doing from now on. I’m owning it. This is me stating my intent:

One creative's engaging and personal take on how to live a more joyous and creative everyday life.

Given the success of her earlier works, it's probably no surprise that Gilbert has now entered the self-help book genre. I can easily see how her editors and publishers might have pushed her along this path and into creating this book. It's not without merit but it's one of those things where it might never have seen the light had it NOT been written by a best-selling author who does intersperse her thoughts with her real-life experience with the challenges of the creative process and who has the creds to speak with authority.

Your response to this book is likely to be based as much on how many books/articles you've read on the topic of creativity rather than on what the author actually puts forth here--or your personal feelings about her life. If you've read a lot already, you'll know that there isn't necessarily anything "new" here on the subject but rather, as always, some clever packaging and a unique POV--and, as you'd expect of a good writer, some memorable quotes. What may keep you more interested are the various personal insights Gilbert offers on her own life and its creative path. She is honest about the difficulties and that alone helps "ground" her book and give it the credibility it needs to be a true inspiration.

Big Magic is one of those titles that turned me off and not on. It's only the subtitle that drew me in: Creative Living Beyond Fear. Yes, that's the thing about creativity. It requires risks and comfort with the unknown. Fear is the killer and the dragon we must face to shape our best lives.

If you come away with nothing more than a bit less fear about living your daily life as you would like, then the book is worth your time. Sometimes it's not about one's career or writing a book or screenplay or achieving world fame or success. Sometimes it's just about getting all the joy and juice out of an average day and life.

All inspiration is personal and subjective. If Gilbert's work has "spoken" to you, you're likely to both enjoy and benefit from her insights from her journey. Clearly she has been living a creative life on many levels.

"Holy Crap, Elizabeth!!"

I've hit my happy...
stride in this book... when reading a book that I absolutely don't want to stop...I want to keep seeing flashing neon lights framed around the BIG MAGICal WORDS that spells, "YES YES YES YES YES!"

Thankfully, I'm also in the section where Gilbert reminds and affirms that LIFE doesn't always abide to how and what we want when we want it...but she also encourages that... if we are faithful lovers, that magical "IT" won't leave us either. So, I have 100 pages remaining, but am SO pumped and happy that I have this snippet of time to WRITE... a review.

If you're passionate about your writing, your art, your whatever-makes-your-precious-heart-sing & be happy... I highly recommend Gilbert's book -- this one. For if you've stalled, set down, given up, cried privately, wondered if it's just too freaking late for you to be the artist, the receiver, a creator, because of the other practical life... here is an experienced wayshower who calls your bluff, your whatever you've told yourself why you can't. She's been rejected (tons), she's kept her day jobs, she's continued through deserts of unknown, silence, angst, doubt, about "the work"...and she's laying it out for us/me/you/your offspring/your friend... find your way.

Find it. Because it IS there (patiently waiting, playing, whistling, digging in the sand with its toes) and it's probably not quite how you've framed it (if you've stalled).

About the Author

Toby Donaldson is a senior lecturer in the School of Computer Science at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada. He has more than a dozen years of experience teaching programming and computer science to students of all levels. He has a Ph.D. in artificial intelligence and is still looking for ways to apply it to his robotic vacuum. When he is not teaching Python, he likes to juggle anything he can get his hands on.

Informative, but not for the beginner

I've been hearing a lot about Python, its excellent syntax, and myriad of uses, so I decided to look for something to introduce me to the language. I ended up picking up Python: Visual QuickStart Guide because it's a light read and comes at a bargain bin price.

The book is written from the perspective that you're a complete beginner at Python. However, this tone makes a lot less sense as you go through the book; the book's examples seem to exist purely to demonstrate how the language's syntax looks. Indeed, there is very little practical application of anything you will learn from this book. It goes into minimal detail, and often what explanation it does offer is useless.

On the plus side, it is one of the first books on the shelves for Python 3. Anyone looking for a quick way to get up to date on Python 3 won't be disappointed. There's even a handy appendix highlighting the differences between Python 2 and Python 3. However, anyone just beginning Python who is looking for a comprehensive walkthrough of the language is going to be disappointed by this book. It amounts to little more than a syntax reference. I've read this book all the way through, and while I understand most of the language's syntax, I still have zero ability to build a Python application for any use. Many of the more in-depth features the book only mentions briefly, and usually only to tell you to check the official Python documentation online for more information, which to the beginner is absolutely useless since the official docs are highly technical and oriented toward a developer.

If you're looking for a book that's going to walk you through Python step by step, this is not your book. Not only is it about 180-pages light, but the text only takes up about half the page for some reason and it's a small sized book. There's less content in 180-pages of this book than there is in the first 60 of other programming books I own. It's a quick read and a great way to get started with Python and its basic syntax. However, taking your abilities further is best left to other, more complete books.

Clean graphic design and simplicity are its strengths

Thin, efficient, professionally designed, and concise guide for Python. Its a simple book but informative book for beginners. It often uses only one basic example per topic, but I prefer that to examples of odd cases which are rarely an issue. I would probably start with an absolute beginners guide or python programming by John Zelle for a book that gives more background and context to supplement this book. Think Python is also a very good free book, [...]

Not Useful for NEWBIES

I'm new to Python, with only limited experience in programing, but it is apparent to me this is a very poor introduction to the language. The other reviewers are obviously more experienced and therefore were not as blindsided by the numerous typos that cause many of the given scripts to not run. Mostly simple mistakes, but clearly shows the lack of editing. The lack of detail on important aspects like environment parameters and general sloppy (of course everyone knows you need to import os, sys before you use the 'os.getcwd() command) writing left me feeling I wasted my money AND time on book. Hope this is not indicative of other Peachpit Press products.

Maybe there is an audience for this book but I'd recommend beginners give it a miss.

A twist on the office romance...

I LOVE office romances. There's just something so taboo about getting it on in such a non-private place. I mean, an office is a place of business, not SEXUAL BUSINESS ;) The setting, combined with the non-traditional sex between two women was enough to make me feel good in all the right places. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and there's lots of detail packed tightly into the perfect-sized read. Five stars, definitely!

Every time I read stories like these the more I want an office job and a nice romp on a desk. I have never been so worked up to go out and get a new job then after reading this story. I could picture myself at the demands of my hot, sexy female boss and I just cannot get enough of that idea. An amazing sexy story that was hard for me to put down! I plan on reading it again....and again.
