A must for all 20th century world history classes

As a retired . global studies teacher I found this book incredibly informative and fascinating. The author has shown the reader what an inspiring woman Golda Meir was and the journey her life took to finally achieve the dream that the Jewish people had for centuries -to form their own homeland in ancient Palestine. In a world where we are desperately looking for role models for young people this book is a beautiful example of the difference one person can make. I highly recommend this book for for anyone interested in 20th century history and as a required reading for the classroom-Kathy Bosseler

Reading at it's Best

Golda Meir ~True Grit is a brilliantly written story of an enormously unconventional woman. I would say," most,if not all,people in America would have a better understanding of current world affairs if they read this book".
It is graphic in places but calls a spade a spade. Reading this book could be a life changing experience for many.
I highly recommend this book for great reading.

Great Kindle First selection... informative and entertaining

Rarely do I see a non-fiction book as a Kindle First selection, even more rarely is it one that actually looks interesting to me. I usually go for the Mystery/Suspense/Thrillers but I switched it up this month. Everyone loves a good, thought-provoking quote, I'm sure I'm not the only one who has filled notebooks with some of their favorites. Between quotes and lyrics I must have filled up dozens of composition books in my youth. I found some cleaning recently and it's really revealing to go back and read what spoke to you in years past. This book delves into many well known quotes from the past and explores what they mean, how they've been misinterpreted or wrongly attributed and I learned a lot I never knew. Bonus points to the author for mentioning one of my favorite singers, POE, in the first few pages... completely irrelevant to this review but check her out too. Anyway, I recommend this as a Kindle First selection for sure and if you're reading this after it's no longer a free selection I would recommend clicking the cover above and reading the first few pages for free. That alone is enough to tell you whether you will find this book as interesting as I did.

I lost interest

Like a few other reviewers, I was very interested in the description of this book. Unfortunately, although the author seems to have done a ton of research in an attempt to get to the root of the sayings, the book is written in a dry style. I read several of the quotations, but quickly lost interest. I believe I would appreciated it more if I had been looking for a reference book. I am not sure about recommending it, because it would all depend upon the reader's intentions. If it is just to enjoy a light read about familiar quotations, some of which aren't all that familiar, I would say give it a pass. If you are using this work as a reference to check your sources and accuracy, then it would be a better fit.

The obscure references got tedious quickly. I generally like learning obscure facts that I can use to irritate people, but this was like the author was doing that to me. Handy to settle arguments, not a book to sit down and just read.

About the Author
Jane Piper Clendinning is professor of music theory at the Florida State University College of Music. She has published articles reflecting her interests in the history of theory, theory and analysis of twentieth-century music, computer pitch recognition, and computer applications in music. Her current research interests include theory and analysis of popular and world musics. She has served as the chair of the Advanced Placement Music Theory Test Development Committee and as an AP reader, and is a regular consultant at AP workshops and summer Institutes.

Elizabeth West Marvin is professor of music theory and former dean of academic affairs at the Eastman School of Music. She has published in the areas of music cognition, music theory pedagogy, theory and analysis of atonal music, contour theory, history of theory, and analysis and performance. She is past president of the Society for Music Theory and is currently co-chair of the Advanced Placement Music Theory Test Development Committee. Marvin is the 2012 recipient of the Gail Boyd de Stwolinski Prize for Lifetime Achievement in Music Theory Teaching and Scholarship.

A workbook with no answer key

Warning: no answer key at all in the book. Not even for odds or evens or something like that. This workbook is totally useless unless you have a teacher to tell you whether your answers are right and wrong. Just page after page of worksheets, which are designed to be torn out and handed in to a teacher. Not useful for self study - and annoying for a class too, because you will be reliant on the teacher to make the book useful. If they only want to grade certain ones, it's not like you could do the rest on your own for more practice. Disappointing. I am used to seeing at least 1/2 the answers provided in my textbooks, so that I may check my work. In the main textbook, which seems to be a very decent textbook, there are some exercises, and those have answers in the back. If you are using that textbook, you may have to make do with those, or find resources elsewhere to get more practice.

Great Theory book!

Awesome book! There is a lot you can get from this. There is a code that comes with it that allows you to do reviewing on a website. Also, it has great indepth work. Although, if you are not a great reader, it may not be the easiest thing to get through. But my theory teacher loves it, and he has gone through a lot of theory books.

I Cannot Believe This Is Still "The Theory Book"!!!!

I had to purchase this book, the workbook and the anthology for my theory class when I went back to college four years ago. I have since finally graduated from Music School. I am a Prime Amazon customer so I get all sorts of recommendations via email on a regular basis. I am so totally impressed that this book is still "the theory book". I purchased my books, going thru music school and they have become an excellent reference library for my piano studio. Great Book!!!!! I wish the pages were not coming out of it in some places. That's my only complaint. This book cost enough to be put together more securely.
