It is useful for beginners with no knowledge of Arabic and for those who have had about a semester or two of either dialect or MSA. It is particularly helpful for people who are going to travel to the Levant for the first time or those who have lived there for a while and need to master and reinforce what they have learned. The book is designed for foreign students who have little or no knowledge of Arabic, formal or informal. It can be used by students themselves on their own, or with the help of an instructor or a tutor. Basically every word is introduced in three forms: Arabic form, transliteration form and English meaning. A beginner non-native who only desires to speak and communicate orally can rely on transliteration and English, while a more experienced student, a heritage student or a non-native with a year of exposure to Arabic who can read and has learned some basic survival vocabulary, may also benefit from the Arabic script and the grammatical notes available in the book. Even if you are well versed in MSA, you still need to have this book. You may already be able to read the newspaper headlines or listen to the news and read a street sign, but it will sound very awkward to use MSA when you meet and greet someone, need a taxi, ask for directions, bargain and negotiate, open a bank account, order a meal or a sandwich, chat with someone in the street or in a caf�, enter a supermarket or a store, ask for the time, or make an appointment and get to know someone on a personal or even professional level, etc. The book is divided into 72 sections, and 24 lessons, mainly by topic. Each section contains pertinent vocabulary needed and used when dealing with the situation at hand. So if you are looking for a word about clothing, or medicine, for example, you simply look in that particular section. There are also sufficient exercises in translation with answers provided for you to doublecheck and verify your knowledge. Do the exercise first before you look up the answer. Continuously test yourself, memorize new words, read and speak out loud even when you are alone and pick the brain of a native friend or acquaintance. Lebanese, and Arabs in general, are impressed when you attempt to speak Arabic with them. They will go out of their way to help you and make your acquaintance. However, they will also try first to practice their English or French with you. Most of them are bilingual or even trilingual. Do not fall for this. Insist on using your Arabic first. The best way to learn a foreign language is through total immersion. Go ahead, immerse yourself. You will be forced to float. Drowning is not an option. You are too smart to drown. Study this book, and find a group of natives to chat with. Better yet, visit Lebanon and have some maza, tabbouli and araq. Then, we’ll talk. Do not be afraid to make mistakes. Keep on trying. Practice makes perfect.

About the Author
George Nicolas El-Hage, Ph.D. is a Lebanese-American poet, professor, linguist, administrator and writer. He was born in Mansourieh El-Metn, Lebanon in 1952. His father was Nicolas Iskandar El-Hage and his mother was Martha Abounader El-Hage. Dr. El-Hage completed his elementary and secondary school education in Lebanon. He acquired his B.A. in Arabic Literature from the Lebanese University in Beirut, Lebanon. While in Beirut, El-Hage studied with and was influenced by poets like Buland al-Haidari and Khalil Hawi. He then emigrated to the United States where he completed both his Master of Arts and Ph.D. in Arabic and Comparative Literature at the State University of New York in Binghamton. His dissertation (later published into a book by NDU Press, Lebanon) was on William Blake and Kahlil Gibran: Poets of Prophetic Vision. He has taught at Yale University, Binghamton University, The Lebanese University, Columbia University, the Monterey Institute of International Studies (a graduate school of Middlebury College) and the Defense Language Institute. His academic career has been equally spent between teaching, authoring, lecturing and administration. Dr. El-Hage is a prolific writer with a perfect command of both English and Arabic languages. His training and expertise in the field of Arabic and Comparative Literature has enabled him to delve into a wide range of topics and areas covering literature, mythology, mysticism, language acquisition, criticism, theology and art. He is a published poet in Arabic, both in Modern Standard and in spoken Levantine Dialect as well as in Lebanese Zajal. He also writes poetry in English and is an accomplished translator. Dr. El-Hage has published seven volumes of poetry, numerous research articles, books on language pedagogy and poetry in Lebanese Dialect and Zajal. His poetry betrays a marked fluctuation between a deep romantic sensitivity and a tragic existential awareness which colors his reading of current universal and regional events. The tragedy of his embattled country constitutes a dominant theme in his writings. El-Hage is a supporter of the free verse movement in Modern Arabic Poetry. Nevertheless, he still appreciates the Qasida ‘Amudiyya, the classical form of traditional Arabic Poetry. He always chooses short meters, and his poetry is characterized by its musical effects.

Don't Bother

The books is written in a mediocre style. Lessons do not begin until page 130. Up to that point you're given table after table of vocabulary (a mixture of both words and phrases that span 72 scenarios).

I don't see anything wrong with this if this was a book compiled by a student for students; however, since the author maintains a Ph.D and makes the claim that their expertise is in teaching, publishing, translating and linguistics (to name a few) then I would expect some kind of professionalism in their work.

The text offers pronunciation drills but provides neither CD nor link to access audio.

This text feels rushed and I advise all trying to use this book to learn the Levantine dialect of Arabic to look elsewhere. I would recommended Alif Baa and Al-Kitaab since they offer the Levant dialect side by side with MSA and Egyptian (I use this series and am happy with it but bought this book because I solely focused on the Levantine dialect).

If you are a total beginner to Levantine Arabic, look elsehwere

I used this book for weeks. I tried so hard. I really did. All I did was learn a few words, I could not make a sentence. The lessons start 2/3 of the book in and they are awful. There is no explanation of the grammar or why it works. They are just conversations and phrases with no real context and you aren't even told what they mean, if you are, then you aren't told why the words have the endings that they have. Just today I started a new course and after four hours I was making sentences and understanding why they are the way they are - this book is beyond terrible. Four hours of another course did more than over a month of this book. He is a native speaker and just does not understand that certain things don't occur to us as naturally as they do to him, I give him that. But why write a book if you don't have that understanding? He could pick up knitting instead... seriously, if you are a native speaker writing a book for native speakers of another language, know that they need a good explanation of every part of the grammar. Now I am using My Easy Arabic. I gave up on Levantine until I know MSA, because this is a mess. I can't find a source for Levantine that isn't either terrible or way out of my budget or reserved for those who already know MSA. Supposedly al-Kitaab has a Levantine course, but it is not as great as their Egyptian one. Those are all the suggestions I can give you, just not this book. Maybe make a Syrian friend. :)

Needs sound files!

This book would be 5-star if it had audio files. It is presented as a "self-guided handbook" for students with no knowledge of Arabic who want to learn Lebanese vocabulary and pronunciation. It's beautifully printed and full of material (245 pages) but without audio it is virtually useless. If I have just missed the audio link, please let me know here and I will upgrade my rating to 5 stars!

A great practical guide for learning expert communication skills

This book is very refreshing because the 4 steps the author teaches are put forth in plain language that are very easy to implement. What I really enjoy is that the book isn't simply about how to communicate better. It's about how to more effectively establish yourself with people and motivate them to adopt your agenda and take action on your behalf.

Another strong point is that the information provided is just as applicable to students, parents and employees as it is high-level business executives. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to increase their confidence and learn engaging communication skills that deliver results.

Harrison's book Breakthrough Communication is a complete surprise to me. I have read many books, both in University and my work place including real estate, where this information would have made a huge difference. Harrison shares his knowledge on becoming the best you can be in your chosen field. Delivers what is promised

For a beginners book I can see only a few ways it could have been made better. Blender
is a very comprehensive and complicated tool. The authors approach is appropriate for
instructing a beginner about using this kind of tool. If you read through to get a general
idea of what is being taught then read it again and work with his suggestions you will
learn. The author encourages experimentation along with the execises which will teach
you even more and help you to remember the location of all the tools and how they work.

After finishing this book you will be well on your way using Blender but you will also know
that this is only a beginners book and there is so much more to Blender. You will know
enough, however, to discover the full power of Blender yourself.

There are times in the book where the text instruction omits some details. The illustrations
help to get back on track. Fortunately hunting around Blender until it can be figured out
ends up teaching better than the explaining.

I have an extensive library of technical books I had acquired back in the old days when you
could thumb through it in a book store. Of the hundred plus books I only bought one that
turned out poorly written, ineffectual and I gave it away. I'm keeping this book.

I gave it five stars. It is a beginners book that delivers above expectations on its promise.

Where are the color images???

I just received my printed copy after reading the eVersion 7 day trial, it is a great easy to follow book. BUT! when I received the printed copy all of the images were in black and white, even though on the cover, of the actual book I received (not just the amazon listing but on the actual book), it states "Full Color Inside".

I contacted the publisher and they said "deal with Amazon, I'm sure they'll take care of it, which they did, as always with Amazon's support (at least in my experiences anyway).

I was surprised there was no: "oh yeah a few copies were not in color" or "Really, we just changed our printers, I'll check into it" or "sounds like a illegitimate copy, please send me your invoice", nope nothing, only that Amazon should deal with it.

I still gave the book 4 stars, because it is a great book and this might be a one-off problem, I just wanted to let people know in case they had a similar issue.

It kills me the number of people who will rate an item, that either never bought it, or was a seller padding the positives, or had an issue with a particular seller and rates the product poorly for it.

Better than other tutorials

For a long while now I have been trying to migrate from Sketchup to Blender, using various tutorials in the process. I tried Blender for Dummies, but that book wasn't too helpful for someone new to blender. Also tried numerous online video tutorials, and still had trouble learning how to the simplest tasks.
This book, however, is straight to point and covers most, if not all, of the capabilities of Blender. Within twenty minutes I learned how to make models.
Another advantage is that it teaches the you how to use Blender 2.5 beta, which will eventually become the standard, instead of teaching you 2.4x whose obsolescence is around the corner.
It's a great buy, I regularly recommend to my modeling friends.

"He said confusedly"

I'm going to write this review while grappling with the emotional conflicts I Am Number Four left me with: disappointment and "eh".

Before I wrestle those demons, I want to start straight off and say that I saw the movie first. I had heard about the book from a few friends and wasn't interested. But, the movie previews looked reasonably enjoyable. I like action, explosions and super powers. Frankly, I was expecting two hours of mind numbing violence and cool chase scenes.

That's pretty much what it was. I liked the movie, despite it's abysmal reviews. It reminded me a bit of Xmen and a lot of Smallville. That's a promising mix. There's some romance, but it's very light if not perfectly easy to ignore... which... is definitely a fault in its own right, but take it for what it is. After watching it, I decided to get the book. I could see potential, and since Hollywood is not often kind to YA book adaptations I gave the original the benefit of the doubt. I wanted a little more depth to the story and figured it would expand much further in text. I found the book on sale and took a leap of faith with my wallet instead of checking it out from the library. A red flag went off when I opened it and saw the page layout. The page numbers will tell you 440. I cannot describe how misleading this is unless you personally open the book and look at the margins. They are big enough to drive a whaling ship through them. Condensed, it probably would not push 250 pages. But, like I said, leap of faith and all.

Welcome to my demons.

This book is written by two different people and wow can you tell. The problem is that one writer is better than the other. Some of the chapters are so dry and brittle that I caught myself staring at the wall instead of reading. There is a minuscule (if any) amount of description or voice when these pieces of the books pop up. It's written with the power and dignity of a grocery list.

- I just entered a house.
- There is a couch.
- A girl was sitting on the couch.
- I hope Sara likes me.
- Golly Mark is a jerk.

This is NOT what I expected. I wanted expansion, not limitation. What goes on inside John's head? I dunno. Not very much apparently. The writing is so bland that it's kind of disgusting. I wasn't expecting a literary masterpiece, but something other than "the sky looked blue today. I'm wearing nike sneakers." would have sufficed. The direct line that broke me was, "he said confusedly".

Author 2's parts of the book are... I loath to say "better", so let's go with "bearable"... because there's actual prose. John sometimes even has personality and emotions! Whoa! It wasn't fantastic, or even near an acceptable second draft, but it was better than reading the back of a cereal box, which is something I guess.

Most of it takes place in high school, centered around John acting out life as a typical kid. Sometimes he goes to math class and his hands start glowing. Ooooooooo~. Do you remember much from day-to-day highschool life? No? That's because it's BORING. This. Should. Be. Easy. The plot is about a teenager with developing superpowers who is on the run from murderous aliens. How do you mess that up? Their story is derivative and needs strong characterization and confident writing to stay afloat. It has neither, so it sinks. James Frey thinks his audience is stupid and can't handle depth or subtlety. That's all there is to it.

Oh. Right. James Frey. Let's talk about him really quick.

I'm sure most goodreads members are already privy to this information by now, but James Frey (author of A Million Little Pieces, a supposed memoir where he lied about everything which, by the way, is the direct opposite of a memoir) is one of the two people who worked on it. By 'worked on it' I mean had a ghostwriter named Jobie Hughes create the story and most of the writing and then not really give him credit or money. Frey is running a so called young adult fiction machine-- an assembly line made up of inexperienced, new writers who are so desperate for publishing that they'll consider his slimy hand. He wants to mass produce the "next Harry Potter", as he so lovingly put it.

If you google "james frey full fathom five" you'll dig up plenty of information on it, including the contract.

This Pittacus Lore fella sure can spin a yarn...

Man, this book is seriously garnering heaps of exposure, what with its already having been optioned for a movie, this movie scheduled for a 2011 release. I AM NUMBER FOUR, which admittedly is an awesome title, is penned by someone named Pittacus Lore, who claims to be a ten thousand year old space alien seeking to warn us of hostile other aliens currently lurking in our midst. This is cute. Except that two folks named Jobie Hughes and James Frey are the actual authors.

The high stakes premise goes like this: Nine alien children have fled their annihilated homeworld of Lorien and have sought refuge on Earth. Having scattered to the winds, they are being hunted down, one by one, by a separate and malevolent extraterrestrial race from a dying planet. Thanks to a quasi-mystical protective charm placed on the Nine, they can only be killed in order (although, my bet is that Number One doesn't regard this charm as all that "protective"). As the book opens, three of the Nine have already been tracked down and murdered. So we come to Number Four.

His name used to be Daniel Jones. It used to be something else before that, and then something else before that, and so on. Ten years on Earth, ten years of hiding and staying always on the move and staying safe and alive... this is the life of Number Four and his guardian and mentor whose name is Henri (oddly, Henri's alien accent sounds very much like a French accent). Number Four has just collected a new scar circling his right ankle, this an indicator that another of the Nine has been recently slain. Three scarred rings around his ankle, and so Number Four knows he's next. And it's time to pack up the bags again, time again to get the eff out of Dodge.

Henri and Number Four - or "John Smith," his new assumed name - have always gravitated to tiny towns, conjecturing that their hunters would stick out more like sore thumbs in tiny towns. They end up in Paradise, Ohio. For John it's another try at blending in in school but without making friends, because no one can be trusted. Except that it's a little different this time. John Smith befriends a geeky kid who is a science-fiction enthusiast. He adopts a stray mutt named Bernie Kosar (and Bernie Kosar, by the way, is easily the book's breakout character). And John Smith also meets a girl. So much for staying on one's guard.

My first impression, while reading the first few pages of this book, was that this whole thing is very reminiscent of two short-lived television sci-fi shows: THE POWERS OF MATTHEW STAR from the early '80s and, more recently, ROSWELL. But then, pressing on, I guess it's inevitable that comparisons to the X-Men would surface. The Nine teens are holing up while waiting for their superhuman powers (called Legacies) to develop. These Legacies vary, and there's no guessing as to which abilities a Nine would latch up to. Number Four is at that age when his Legacies would shortly begin to crop up. And they do start cropping up, one by one, and there is a really fun factor in watching our sympathetic alien boy try to cope with each incoming talent.

Gratifyingly, the alien hunters from Mogadore aren't only downright intimidating, they seem even more powerful than the Nine and their guardians (and the guardians aren't at all equipped with superpowers). This drives up the suspense. What I AM NUMBER FOUR has going for it is its irresistible sci-fi/superhero premise and a pace that really moves. Number Four is a likable protagonist, although someone needs to explain to him the exact definition of keeping a low profile. After all, dude is supposed to be in hiding and fitting in. He really doesn't do much of either. None of the supporting cast break out of their stereotypical mold, and only the scene-stealing dog Bernie Kosar seems to be an original character. I will say that John's geeky pal Sam does come up with a touching reason for why he's such a sci-fi freak and why he wears those fugly prescription glasses. And as much as I dig Sarah, her and John Smith's teen romance feels like any other teen romance in YA lit. It comes in a nice, predictable package. Sarah is gorgeous and nice... and, well, bland. Another issue I have concerns a high school bully whose turnaround comes too abruptly. Perhaps the most intriguing element in the book concerns the mystery surrounding the very peculiar Bernie Kosar (see how I keep coming back to the dog?).

I AM NUMBER FOUR is the first book in a planned six-book series, and it reads very visual, especially in the explosive action sequences, and no wonder this is being made into a movie. Number Four performs bits of astounding derring-do throughout the book, but things get really amped up during the final 90 pages. It all culminates in one of those blistering "Release the Kraken!" Jim Butcher-type paranormal (except it's sci-fi) shoot-'em-outs. I can see why Bay and Spielberg are salivating so.

I liked this book, and will most definitely be thre when the sequels come out. But here's the thing, if you're hanging your hat on something that's on par with the likes of Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games series or even Michael Grant's Gone novels, this won't suit you. I AM NUMBER FOUR isn't as immersing or resonant as those books. THE HUNGER GAMES made me well up in places. GONE reads like LORD OF THE FLIES as co-authored by Rod Serling and Stephen King. I AM NUMBER FOUR had me eating up all the "superhero without a costume" elements, and it's always nice when you can transfer yourself onto a central character who is superstrong and superfast and who won't back down from bullies. I did really like that a surprise character shows up very late in the book, and it looks like she'll be heavily featured in future installments. I'll give this one 4 stars out of 5, because I'm shallow like that and big, bold, f/x-heavy fighty fights never ever fail to transfix me. And because the dog Bernie Kosar is in it.

A sci-fi adventure that guys and girls can get on board with

In the not so distant past I worked at a few book stores. A problem I ran into frequently was finding books for teen boys. The YA market is flooded with books meant solely for girls. Boys have always been a harder sell when it comes to reading and publishers haven't made it an easier job, especially when they have flooded the teen market with paranormal romance.

So recommendations for teen boys often meant I would recommend The Hunger Games. Unfortunately many guys aren't too keen on reading a book in which the main character is a girl, no matter how good the story is. So after going through the other 5 or 6 good teen guy books I could think of I would often recommend a book in the general fiction and literature section, but parents often fear that their children will encounter questionable subject matter. Which they may, but they should also remember many of the books their children read in school are found in the fiction and literature not the teen section.

I found "I am Number Four" to be a great action adventure, that followed the traditional hero archetype. The main character, number Four or John Smith, is as relatable as a alien teenager on the run can be. The surrounding cast of characters rounds out this alien boys average existence, Henri, his alien guardian/father figure, Sam, his nerdy best friend, Sarah, his crush, and Mark, a bully and Sarah's ex. The story is a super power driven action packed adventure, filled with all the tender feelings and angst that a every teenager has.

It was a quick read. I got through it in about a day and a half. I would recommend this book for anyone over the age of 13. I hope that the quick success of this book will bring about a revamp of the YA publishing field and allow for more guy teen fiction or fiction that can cross gender lines. Anyone that truly enjoyed this book should read The Hunger Games. I can't wait to see the film and read the rest of the series. Happy reading to you all.

After receiving her Ph.D. in sociology from UCLA in 1993, Dr. Kawanishi researched and traveled in the United States and Japan.

"Families Coping with Mental Illness-Stories from the US and Japan" by Yuko Kawanishi has something important to say to three kinds of readers.

The large numbers of parents, spouses and siblings confronting the mental illness of a family member will find that the book helps them both understand the tragedy and affirms their personal growth following dedication to a mentally-ill loved-one. In fact FCwMI is comprised of meaningful love stories However the book is not an escapist text., but hard hitting in describing the stages when mental illness manifests itself and the emotional responses of family members as they deal with fear, anger, shame, expectations and the like in confronting the realities of the disease and its meaning for their own lives.

The intimacy of the family stories will bring new perspectives to psychologists, clinicians, and social workers who are dedicated to patient care and family support. Although these professionals are familiar with many ways mental illness impacts both patient and family, FCwMI reveals contextual variables that affect chemical, psychological , analytic and other forms of treatment that can inform practice, especially in multicultural situations.

The general public may be reluctant to confront another ravaging disaster in a fear- ridden society but the information and knowledge given , as when confronting other terrors, is assuring.
