*Starred Review* In the book prepared from his Bampton Lectures in America, Riley-Smith devotes two chapters each to conceptions of crusading in two periods, that of the original Crusades, 1095–1300, and that of imperialism and nationalism in Africa and the Middle East, 1800–2007. In the earlier period, a crusade was, Riley-Smith unequivocally asserts and demonstrates from the theological and historical records, a “penitential war pilgrimage”; that is, it was a military action waged on behalf of God by soldiers who journeyed to the Holy Land and fought to free it from non-Christian rule in penitence for their sins. In the latter period came nineteenth-century attempts to revive the military religious orders of the Crusades, most notably by a French Catholic archbishop for the defense of missionaries and the abolition of slavery in north central Africa. Overlapping that brief, unsuccessful venture and continuing to this day, interpretations of the Crusades by novelist Walter Scott and historian Joseph-Francois Michaud have been employed to facilitate Western rapprochement with Islam and, contrarily, to formulate the historical-economic interpretation of Western-Islamic relations with which Muslim militants justify violent jihad (the Islamic form of crusade, Riley-Smith says). Best depiction of the first transAmerican journey in 1526-1540

I have known the story of the 4 travelers, since my dad recounted the tales to us as bedtime stories. In college, I took his course in Southwestern Literature (UofAZ)and he took two class periods to tell the story. We had to read "La Relacion" aka "Shipwrecks" which was a popular version told by Cabeza de Vaca himself, who was one of the 4 survivors after a shipwreck on Galveston Island and 4-5 years of slavery to Texas tribes before they crossed the land to Mexico and found Spaniards. In my twenties, I didn't think much about it and took it at face value.

In my 40's I recounted the story to a group of people among whom were African Americans.I was astounded that they didn't know it. I went back to CdeV's telling again and read it carefully. I had always talked up Esteban, because I loved him as a kid. Now I saw that although not mentioned much,Esteban was pivotal to the success of the journey. He was able to learn languages quickly and served as interpreter. He also seemed to fit right in with the native tribes and danced with them, ate with them and lead the way to the shamanism the others learned. It appeared women and children loved him. I scoured La Relacion, then went back to the Uof A and read everybody's ideas about him. No one really seemed to understand what he did- he was the real leader of the crossing and smoothed the way for the 3 Spanish aristocrats who made the journey with him- one of whom was his owner.

I also reached my own conclusion based on spending years as a teenager on the Navajo Reservation and visiting Zuni many times. I was stunned that the Zunis killed him. I could not believe they would act that out of character for the tribal values. I never felt right about the accounts of Esteban's death.

One book in the rare book collection referred to a piece of manuscript that had an alternative version of Esteban's biography. The lost piece of paper cinched it for me. I have also thought it was more than possible, it was probable. I always check every new version of the story and never have seen that reference anywhere again ........

Now that I am 70, I FINALLY found Goodwin's (2008) book and read it with relish. Not only is he the most thorough scholar of the subject, he is a delightful writer. Fresh and clean, not at all pedantic or obtuse. It is some of the best history writing I have ever come across. His scholarship is impeccable, his conjectures highly probable based on the evidence he presents. And he actually included that lost scrap of manuscript!

The book is really a mystery. What happened to Esteban? This is the second book that uses that piece of info, but Goodwin has approached it carefully, circling and laying down his evidence. I love it! I bow to Robert Goodwin!

A Slice of History

Crossing the Continent, by Robert Goodwin, is the story of the first African explorer of the American south. Esteban Dorantes (1500-1539?) was a Spanish slave, and through circumstance and ability, he was chosen to be a military commander of a religious expedition to establish a route into Arizona and New Mexico.

This book is part detective work since slaves in the Spanish empire at that time were not considered to be noteworthy and only through careful reading of the Spanish documents and Indian legends does Esteban's story come to light.

This book is part Goodwin's story on the methods of his research. I found this to be as interesting as Esteban's story. From ancient documents in Seville, Spain to museums in New York and to the Zuni Indians, Robert takes us on his adventure in piecing together the history.

This book is part descriptive. Goodwin has great details on life in Seville, Northern Africa, and Spanish America. What the Texas Indians were like and how they ate in early 1500's are much different than in the accounts in the 1700's. His background explanations of the historians and how books of the time shaped popular opinion bring to life how much has not changed.

This book is all history. Goodwin writes with an easy to read prose that blends in all parts to make is a good, historically accurate, story. I especially like how he puts people's motives in historical context. It makes for a fuller understanding of the story and the times. Crossing the Continent is not a quick read, but rather an enjoyment and wonderment of a slice of history.

Stays with you

Let me say that this is a problematic book. The author has a number of pet theories and tries a bit too hard in places to make the available data--or lack thereof--fit his narrative. The ending, in particular, is mostly wishful thinking. And yet--

I read this book ~5 years ago and it still lingers in my mind.

It gave me a very different understanding of the early years of the European invasion of the Americas, for one thing. I'd read other books on the subject and was aware of both the horrendous treatment of the indigenous population and also that a few Africans accompanied even the earliest expeditions. I was not aware of how deeply rooted African slavery already was in Spain, and how the trading patterns established by both the Moors as well as early Portuguese explorers of Africa would wind up so profoundly affecting the social history of the Americas from the very beginning. I find myself looking at later history, especially in North America, in different ways as a result.

Secondly, Goodwin really enriches the story of Cabeza de Vaca and his fellow travelers. It's an amazing adventure even in its most traditional version (Cabeza de Vaca's own account). Goodwin closely examines that text along with several other contemporary documents, teasing apart their differences and the varying agendas of their authors to bring forward more hidden details that help build out the profile of his hero, the slave Estevan. The resulting reading, built on very interesting scholarship, is an inspiring portrait of adaptability and resilience as embodied by a man who had to start over and establish his value to those around him--all of them alien to him--again and again throughout his life.

As others have noted, the text meanders in between these and other threads, but what I've ultimately taken away from the book definitely outweighs those flaws.

It's very sweet.

I didn't expect much from it but when I read it it had a very good storyline. Though I find the main heroine very with little self confident it made it very sweet that the hero was that much outgoing and just a sweetheart for a male character in a harlequin manga or novel. I'm gonna have to get the novel in itself to read that one. It really was a sweet read.

This was a good read and I did enjoy the book. The only part I didn't like was the female lead being so stubborn about accepting that someone could love her for herself. Talk about "mule-headed." Geez, she took it to another level! But it did end happy families and I do love a happy end.....

Extremely useful guide

As noted in previous reviews and comments, this guide is extremely useful. It is useful as a plant guide in its intended region (and surrounding regions likely) and also as a general model for how to construct plant guides that are useful. Its key features are good organization of plants by features to identify them, inclusion of BOTH line drawings and photographs of each species, inclusion of numerous types of plants (grasses, mosses, etc) rather than only 'wildflowers' like so many less useful guides, and well-done and interesting descriptions of the plants (including ethnobotany information, such as how humans have used the plants). Among plant guides, this simply has been one of the most useful purchases I have made. Also, the publisher (Lone Pine) has published guides for some other regions. This publisher's guides generally are among the best, as many of them contain the excellent features listed above. The utility of having both a line drawing and a photograph of a species to identify it cannot be understated.

Review of Forest Plants of Central Ontario

I used this plant guide in Killarney Provincial Park (Ontario) and found it useful for identifying major plant species of the area. It is appropriate for more advanced botanists as a handy field guide and is also appropriate for investigators who have no formal botanical training but who want to quickly learn to identify plants.

This book covers a small area of Eastern North America, so it is easier to identify plants that you might find in say the Ottawa Valley, without ploughing through all the plants that only occur further south. It includes trees, shrubs, herbs, grasses, sedges & rushes, ferns & allies, mosses & liverworts and lichens, all in one book. For the non-botanist this is the best book for this area (including West Quebec). Unlike other wildflower books that concentrate on flowers, this shows and describes leaves and fruits, making identification easier at times when there are no flowers. Charts and keys at the start of each section help in identification.

About the Author
Park Foremanis the global information security director at GroupM. He has worked in information technology for more than 20 years and is an expert in information security strategy and process. As a consultant, he has helped financial and telecommunications companies achieve a variety of security objectives. He has worked for the past eight years designing, implementing, and managing security architectures for Fortune 100 companies. He started in IT in 1976 as a self-taught single-board computer designer for coding systems translation, and worked his way through college as a programmer, completing a thesis in operating systems security models in 1986. During his career, he spent 10 years in systems development and architecture working as a programmer and systems analyst/architect, and then went to Bell Laboratories to manage application development for network provisioning systems. While specializing in security architecture and operations, Park has worked in some of the largest security operations centers in the world, including AT&T's Security Center of Excellence. Challenging, yet not to the point of livid frustration :-). A nice brain break from Sudoku. Clear, easy-to-understand directions. Easily readable, full page puzzles. Only con is that the last 20+ pages contain introductions to other Sudoku & brain puzzle types. Fine in the first book. But, repetitively published in every other game book by this author.

Please Tell Me This is the End

The tribulation is over and the millennium is beginning. Christians who have died have returned to earth in their glorified state to help those Christians who are still alive rule the earth. The earth's population is made up entirely of adult Christians and children who haven't yet made up their mind.

There is a huge need to evangelize the children, so Chloe and Buck, both glorified, set up a day care. They children play games and learn Bible stories. Rayford, the only surviving member of the original Tribulation Force, reunites with old friends and works to further Christ's kingdom by doing whatever is needed. 100 years in, he leads a group that sets about revitalized Egypt after it is judged for turning from God.

But in the background, there is resistance building. Calling themselves The Other Light, they set about convincing unbelievers that, if enough of them believe, Satan can win when he is freed. Is there anything our heroes can do to stop them?

Okay, I'll admit I have had a love/hate relationship with these books. Some books I've loved, some I've hated, and some I've loved and hated. This book definitely falls into the hated category.

After some boring set up, we advance to almost the 100 year mark, where we spend almost the entire time. There really is no central villain to the story, which makes the conflict very weak. As with GLORIOUS APPEARING, there are long passages that are direct quotes from the Bible but do nothing to advance the story. And this includes three times they stop their story to tell us a Bible story quoted almost completely from the Bible. The characters seem even weaker then normal, too.

And that leaves out my biggest complaint. A major plot point is that all people who haven't accepted Christ will die on their hundredth birthday. I've been asking around, and no one I've talked to has ever heard that before. Furthermore, the verse they use to justify it sure doesn't seem to say that to me.

Now all this sounds like I hated it. The last 100 pages had some great conflict that almost redeemed the book for me. If the rest of it had been that way, I would have enjoyed the book more.

GLORIOUS APPEARING felt like a great conclusion to the series. I should have stopped there.
