Young People and Housing: Transitions, Trajectories and Generational Fractures (Housing and Society Series)From Brand: Routledge

Young People and Housing brings together new research exploring the economic, social, and cultural challenges that face young people in search of permanent housing. Featuring international case studies from Asia, Europe, and Australia,Young People and Housingis a collection of groundbreaking work from leading scholars in housing policy.

Younger generations across a wide range of societies face increasing difficulties in gaining access to housing. Housing occupies a pivotal position in the transition from parental dependence to adult independence. Delayed independence has significant implications for marriage and family formation, fertility, inter and intra generational tensions, social mobility and social inequalities.

The social and cultural dimensions are, of course, enormously varied with strong contrasts between Asian and Western societies in terms of intergenerational norms and practices in relation to housing. Nevertheless, younger households in China (including Hong Kong), Japan, the USA, Australasia and Europe face very similar challenges in the housing sphere. Moreover, concerns about the housing future for younger generations are gaining greater policy and popular prominence in many countries.

Review

"This book is a valuable source of international information on the trajectories of young households from dependence to independence. In this capacity it will be of interest to housing and social policy scholars. It can also provide a helpful information base for policy makers who do see problems in the housing, labour market and distributional consequences of the changing patterns that are developing." - Michael Oxley, Cambridge Centre for Housing and Planning Research, University of Cambridge, UK, International Journal of Housing Policy

Hermits: Insights of Solitude, by Peter France

In an inspirational study, the author of Greek as a Treat traces the history of hermits, from the Greek Cynics, to the Desert Fathers, to more modern seekers of solitude, including Thoreau, Thomas Merton, and American poet Robert Lax. 15,000 first printing."

From Library Journal
A former BBC personality, France (Greek as a Treat, Penguin, 1995) spends over half the year living in solitude on the Greek island of Patmos; his own taste of the hermetical life leads him to write this study of solitaries from the ancient Greeks to the present. France has chosen a representative group of hermits, and his simple discussions of such figures as Thoreau and Thomas Merton serve as good introductions for readers unfamiliar with their work. Chapters on lesser-known figures such as Charles de Foucald or groups such as the Russian startsy (spiritual fathers) are, likewise, excellent introductions, and a nice bibliography leads the reader to more in-depth sources. The final chapter highlights the contemporary poet Robert Lax in a fitting, parting interview. This well-written, rather personal exploration will entertain as well as inform. Readers interested in a more scholarly treatment would do well to consult France's bibliography. A good choice for public and academic collections.?Mark Woodhouse, Elmira Coll. Lib., N.Y.

From Booklist
France gave up his high-profile career with the BBC to lead a contemplative life on a Greek island, a decision that inspired this engrossing history of hermits. Most solitaries left no record of the revelations they experienced, but others felt compelled to share the insights acquired through living a simple and meditative life, and it is those articulate hermits, those intent and spiritual-minded outsiders who have, curiously, taught the rest of us so much about living in the thick of things, that France so skillfully portrays. He begins with a masterful overview of the early Greek philosophers, who were "the first to discover the significance of the individual," a realization intrinsic to the hermit tradition, then moves on to St. Anthony of Egypt and other Desert Fathers, the forest-dwelling Russian Orthodox startsy, our own Thoreau, the Hindu hermit Ramakrishna, the Saharan explorer Charles de Foucauld, Thomas Merton, and the poet Robert Lax. France's supple commentary is augmented by piquant and affecting excerpts from various hermits' teachings, a blend that succeeds gloriously in illuminating and celebrating our species' "impulse to withdraw from society," an attempt at self-discovery that, wondrously, serves instead to define our profound commonalities Donna Seaman

From Kirkus Reviews
A lively, vivid, and moving history of hermits, religious and secular, and the instincts that drove them to embrace solitude. France (The Rape of Egypt, not reviewed), deeply attracted to the solitary life himself, began his investigation because he wondered ``if solitude confers insights not available to society.'' He traces the origins of a belief in isolation as part of a meditative life to China in the sixth century b.c., when the newly emergent faith of Taoism taught that ``it is by withdrawing rather than by asserting ourselves, through retreat rather than pursuit . . . that we acquire wisdom.'' This belief was similar to the ideas of the Desert Fathers, devout Christians who, in the centuries immediately after the rise of that faith, retreated to harsh landscapes well away from society, where they could wrestle with the meaning of their faith and the stubborn appeals of the flesh. France devotes a chapter to the Russian startsy, revered spiritual figures who spent years apart from society in an attempt to attain serenity--but who then often rejoined society to share what they had learned of the deeper instincts of faith. There are studies of, among others, Henry David Thoreau, the Indian mystic Sri Ramakrishna, and Thomas Merton, whose writings offer a contemporary insight into ``the nature of solitude, its risks and its benefits.'' The book concludes with a chapter on the poet Robert Lax, who has lived a largely solitary, reflective life on the Greek island of Patmos for four decades. Writing in a prose of great clarity, and drawing heavily on the precise, powerful reflections of solitaries and religious hermits, France offers a succinct survey of the forces that have drieven men and women to separate themselves from society to pursue their faith, and argues persuasively that solitude still can, in our relentlessly crowded, anxious, hustling age, offer unique spiritual benefits and insights. very peaceful
By A Customer
Too few books are available on the life of the contemplative. With that said, this book is already a rarity. It's quality is quite good, although the pages have yellowed in only three years, like most books in our "technologically advanced" culture.
The content of the book gave this reviewer a great sense of peace, as it is comforting to find that others hold the experience of solitude in high esteem. It seems that because of France's firsthand experience with this simple pleasure, he is able to describe the perspective in a unique and calming way, far from the usual deprecatory references to the Unibomber, etc.
It undoubtedly helped to alleviate some of this stigma, as well as piquing interest in the solitary life. We need respected hermits in this day and age, as an outside view of the inside is what keeps us balanced. I recommend it to everyone.

wonderful book
By Phoenicia
I never heard of this book and bought it on recommendation from a reviewer on the amazon site. I am so glad I bought it. It is a wonderful read, with lots of interesting bits and pieces on well known hermits in ancient times, without the book being superficial. Quite the opposite really. It is a good and insightful study on those who seek a life of solitude. I have only read about 15 pages of it, and glanced through the rest, but I already know that this will be one of my favourites.

It is a book to read and enjoy again and again. Highly recommended.

Blow your mind
By J. Toth
A beautiful account of man's timeless search for solitude and truth, this book scours the great religious traditions and recounts the lives and writings of some of the coolest, wierdest and most sane people the world has ever seen. The chapter on Charles de Foucauld is itself worth the price of the book.

Fulfilling The Great Commission
By David T
The numbers are horrible. Fewer than 1 out of 20 Christians share the Gospel message with the unsaved. Probably with good reason. Years ago our faith was largely pracitced by the public or at least everyone had a somewhat open heart to Jesus. Today ... not so much. The old "in your face" method of evangelism quickly turns people off. But wait ... there's hope (with God there always is). Here's a great book that gives the budding Billy Graham a way to effectively communicate the Gospel in today's parlance. It gives real life examples of common do's & dont's but also allows the reader to gain some wonderful tools for building a bridge to share our faith without running the person off. Also great tips for recovering lost oppurtunities of the past. I know of a huge local church that's using this very book in an evangelistic class this summer. Remember Saints ... it's the great commission. Not the great suggestion. A must have! Peace :)

Refreshing
By Tom
Doug, the author, has written an accessible and immensely useful little book. Most of what's there comes from Doug's mistakes along the way. He bends us away from proclamation to a posture of listening, reflecting back what your are hearing, and asking genuine questions with the goal helping you and your friend clarify what and why you believe what each believes. In the process an aquanence might become a friend and maybe even a follower of Jesus. It feels honoring to both parties and takes the pressure off. Maybe both parties will leave feeling good about what took place.

Very important read
By Shula
If you consider yourself a "Christian," "religious," or an "evangelist," you owe it to yourself and your loved ones to read this book. It's only 127 pages long, but there are some very important things to consider in this book. It is food for thought, a practical tool, and a plan of action.

If you know nothing of the subject, then this is an excellent book to start out with. The CD that comes with it even has helpful powerpoint presentations and quizzes to better help you retain the information. (My college "professor" was so lazy that he actually used the book's powerpoint presentations to teach the class... now there's a waste of tuition money).

If you know the basics of OSM (and you probably do, because many of the principles are based on common sense), then don't get this book. Go find an intermediate/advanced OSM book that doesn't have lava all over the cover.

Needs to expand on calculation problems
By Trista A. Biggs
This book is good, a lot smaller than the other versions. To scale it down, though, they cut back on explaining certain calculations. They think we remember this stuff from undergrad???

Do Less, Get More: How to Work Smart and Live Life Your Way, by Shaa Wasmund

When you stop trying to do so much, you get so much more done.

Do you put yourself under too much pressure to succeed, which only makes it harder to achieve? Are you constantly playing catch-up and struggling to find time for the things, and people, you love?

It doesn’t have to be this way. Anything is possible when you stop trying to do everything at the same time.

Often it’s fear that keeps us stuck in our patterns. If we’re super busy then no one can say we’re not working hard. But there’s another way to live a life that’s both more enjoyable and more productive, if only we can break those routines.

In Do Less, Get More, entrepreneur and bestselling author Shaa Wasmund reveals that when we embrace a “less is more” attitude, we can appreciate all the good things we already have and find the courage to prune the nonessentials. And then we can find the space in which to pursue exciting new opportunities.

Wasmund teaches us how to become experts in the things we’re truly passionate about, rather
than mediocre jacks-of-all-trades. Her tools include exercises like:

* Escaping the “when, then” trap. Stop putting something off because you’re waiting to be ready (“I’ll start my own business when my kids are out of the house” or “I’ll lose weight when this project is over”). Take one practical step toward what you want right now.
* Nurturing your support network: Who are the people who truly support you? Prioritize those who are genuinely on your side and practice asking for help. Focus on quality over quantity in developing your network.
* Scheduling for value: What gets put in our calendar gets done. And you shouldn’t only plan for work projects: scheduling time for the people and activities you love and that give you purpose and energy is just as important.

This life-changing book gives you the tools to ditch your to-do list and follow your dreams. It will be your essential guide to doing what you love—and letting go of the rest.

CONCLUSION

INTRODUCTION

‘ Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple. ’

I’ve been known as the queen of multitasking for too long. Whether from a misguided sense of duty to ‘do everything’, a constant fear of ‘losing out’ or an innate need to be ‘in control’, I’ve tried to juggle more things than any sane person should attempt or want to do. My phone has been like an umbilical cord and email has ruled my life. Mindfulness was remembering to pick up my keys before I left the house.

Sound familiar? Have you ever found yourself checking your emails or texts while having dinner with your family or friends? Do you feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day, that you run around getting nowhere fast? Do you wish you could put what really matters first in your life, but struggle to figure out how?

It’s so easy to justify why we do the things we do, but when we take a closer look we begin to see and understand the true consequences of our constant ‘busyness’. Are we genuinely enjoying our lives, doing what we love and being with the people who matter? Or are we rushing from one task to the next, trying to be all things to all people, and not feeling like we have the time or energy to give anything or anyone the attention they deserve?

The comfort of being busy

Some time ago my world fell apart when my gorgeous, wonderful partner passed away. He wasn’t just my partner, he was my beautiful son’s dad, and he was an awesome dad. My coping mechanism was to occupy every minute of my time so that I would have none left to think. It helped me survive, but now I realize I let it possess me like an inner demon. I became trapped in a straitjacket of my own making; if my mind wandered I’d just pull the ties tighter with more responsibilities, more emails, projects, people, more, more, more . . .

And then my son said to me, ‘Mummy, you’re always busy.’ I looked back at him. It had taken the eyes of a child to show me what was happening. The light bulb went on. It was time for me to make some decisions about what was really important and start filtering out the noise to hear my own voice – and listen to what it was saying.

When I did that, I realized that the successful projects and relationships in my life – the ones I really connected with, the ones I really wanted – all had something in common: they worked because I gave them my attention at the right moments.

When I work with entrepreneurs and people starting up their own businesses, I always encourage them to identify the one thing they can do that day that will make the biggest difference. Not the five things or even the three things: the one thing.

Most people seem to believe they need to do more, when really they just need to do what matters. To filter out the distractions and focus on the things that make the difference between surviving and thriving, between playing catch-up and being in the lead.

To become world class at this, you have to give yourself a bit of time and space to let go, let the real you unfold. (Reading this book is perfect.) When you are thinking clearly, you can more easily discover what it is you really want, and then you need consciously to prioritize it; to discriminate between the things that help you grow and the things that set you back – or at least keep you standing still.

To make this a reality requires honest, deep thinking, and you must follow that with action. We all place limitations on ourselves, often subconsciously, and until you uncover them, face them and free yourself of them, you’ll be stuck on life’s hamster wheel.

It’s time to look your fears and excuses in the face and prepare to jump out of your comfort zone, to start taking control of your life and to forge time for yourself and the things that matter. Your destination is happiness, and you can enjoy every moment of the journey.

Why are you waiting to be truly happy?

According to recent research from the Royal Economic Society, most people’s lifetime happiness curve is U-shaped. Our happiness is high in our youth, starts to trail off by the time we are just twenty-five and doesn’t pick up again until we retire. Unsurprisingly, this research indicates that our happiest times are when our lives are simplest, and the pressures of expectation from work and family commitments are at their lowest. That leaves forty years in between – the period when we are considered to be in our mental and physical prime, but during which too many of us settle for being ‘crazy busy’ and just moderately happy. That’s scary. Do we really want to defer living life at its best until we retire?

Of course, this book isn’t a ‘how to find happiness’ manual, much though I’d like it to be. Sadly, there is no secret formula that will solve all life’s problems. The best we can do is help each other illuminate the dark corners. My aim is to provide a wake-up call to remind you that it’s possible to grab your own happiness and show you how to do it. This book is about living life to the fullest and not squandering it. It is for anyone who has something to change and the desire to do so. It’s particularly useful for those with short attention spans and tight schedules. People who want to know how, not just why.

I thought about calling this book How to Get More Out of Life, but it isn’t about ‘getting more stuff’. This book is about taking what you already have and making the most of it – and in order to do so you may need to let go of a few things in the process. It’s about squeezing every last drop out of life while you have the time to appreciate it. Getting the best from life is about digging down to the core of who you really are, what you really want and what makes you truly happy, then making the changes necessary to focus on those things.

It’s about reconnecting with the things that make you smile and your heart sing, the pursuits, the people and the work that give you lasting happiness, the dreams that linger unfulfilled, the adventures you’ve yet to set off on, the businesses you’ve always wanted to set up, the places you’ve wished you’d travelled to, the restaurants you’ve never eaten in, the lives you want to change, the house by the sea, the yoga at dawn, the book that’s never been written, the life you imagined. This isn’t a fairy tale, and neither is it wishful thinking. Many, if not most, of the things that will create your best life are perfectly attainable if you are willing to stop doing what’s not important and start prioritizing what is.

You can do anything . . . but you can’t do everything. At least not at the same time.

Relight your fire

This isn’t a book about time management either, but it will help you to prioritize how and where you invest your time to create a life you love.

I’m not going to suggest you sell everything you own and go backpacking around the world (although if that’s your dream, I’m certainly not going to advise against it). What I will teach you are practical ways to create change, now. It’s about appreciating the life you already have and making it better. We’re renovating here, not rebuilding.

Most of you reading this book already have a pretty decent life – you just might be so caught up in being busy you’ve forgotten what it looks like. You have a roof over your head, whether you rent or own; you go on holidays; perhaps you have kids and/or a partner; you definitely have friends and colleagues; you have a job or run your own business. Most of all, you have dreams.

This book is about how we resurrect those dreams and bring more of them to life, by spending less time doing the things we are conditioned to believe we ought to do and more time doing the things we love to do. It’s about relighting your fire and discovering your courage. It’s about knowing that you can’t please all of the people all of the time . . . and that’s OK.

ought: used to give advice, indicate duty or correctness; an expected state

There will be tough times, when you’re going to have to face up to your own culpability in holding yourself back (we all do it), but there will be plenty of eureka moments, too. Moments when you realize a few simple changes can make a big difference. That getting the best out of life is possible for everyone, not just a select few.

THE PLACES YOU WANT TO GO

THE THINGS THAT MAKE YOUR HEART SING

THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE YOU SMILE

THE LIVES YOU WANT TO CHANGE

THE BUSINESS YOU’VE ALWAYS WANTED

THE HOUSE BY THE SEA

THE YOGA AT DAWN

THE BOOK THAT’S NEVER BEEN WRITTEN

Irritating map typo on p 45: in place of the map of the Vermont/Massachusetts border, they have the map of the Massachusetts/Conneticut border, the very same map that is reprinted again in its proper place on p. 127. Other than that, a useful comprehensive guide to these sections of the A.T.

Barely There: Short Poems, by Yahia Lababidi

The flashy poets and the poets with a schtick get the big audience, but it is the quiet poets whose individual poems more often linger with me. I'd trade all of Ginsberg, say, for William Bronk's six-line poem "After Bach" which derives from the cello suites the lesson that sadness "can be in part /to accept the absence of One to say it to" And it is Bronk whose work is called to mind for me by Yahia Lababidi's Barely There, in which "in embracing, we let go"' - H. PRAISE FOR PREVIOUS BOOKS

''Lababidi moves from the aphoristic and the epigrammatic to the suggestive, the lightly hinted, the nuanced, with impressive ease. This is a rare gift, more associated with European writers than with American. This striation of tone, of register, of mood, gives a sense of surprise to his sentences; they spring back to the touch. Sometimes they even seem surprised at themselves. . . . The book becomes an exploration on which the reader embarks. This is one of the elements in collections . . . I most appreciate this secret invitation au voyage that the author holds out and Lababidi does this extremely well, with courtesy as well as cunning.''
Eric Ormsby, poet, scholar, and author of ''Ghazali: The Revival of Islam''

''I find myself pausing everywhere among these wisdoms, wondering why the world stumbles and staggers through such a dark and greedy time when there are people alive with such keen, caring insight. . . . If Yahia Samir Lababidi were in charge of a country, I would want to live there.''
Naomi Shihab Nye, poet, anthologist, and author of ''There is No Long Distance Now''

''Wisdom for Lababidi is on the move, a matter of suppleness rather than rigor, of insights and angles rather than rules. . . . As intense as his conversation with himself is, it is also kind, tolerant of his own limits and of ours. . . . I give you that expert self-listener, that excellent writer, Yahia Lababidi.''
James Richardson, poet, aphorist, and author of ''By the Numbers''

''Lababidi knows that fables and metaphors overcome resistance more readily than facts and position papers. His half-smile becomes our own, changing our self-estimate, and then who knows? the choices we make as well.''
Alfred Corn, poet, essayist, and author of ''Tables''

''Brilliant. . . . think of the wild mind of Blake and the calmly collected Wallace Stevens, with a touch of Franz Kafka s hammer inside a velvet glove.''
Duff Brenna, novelist, author of ''Murdering the Mom: A Memoir''

''Yahia Lababidi s aphorisms are elegant, thoughtful, and wise, written proof that the art of the aphorism is still very much alive.''
James Geary, author of ''I Is an Other: The Secret Life of Metaphor'' --Wipf and Stock Publishers

Lovely spiritual meditations--poems of growth and development
By Frank Watson
"Barely There" explores a variety of spiritual, meditative, natural, and other topics, in typically concise and impactful form. His style is aphoristic, often in haiku-like meditations on a spiritual feeling or philosophical idea, as in "Options"

You can’t bury pain
and not expect it
to grow roots.

But you can try
and tend tenderly
to its subtle fruits.

Lababidi also has lovely lyrical poems, reflective of the depth of meaning he finds in nature, as in "Breath"

Beneath the intricate network of noise
there’s a still more persistent tapestry
woven of whispers, murmurs and chants

It’s the heaving breath of the very earth
carrying along the prayer of all things:
trees, ants, stones, creeks and mountains alike

All giving silent thanks and remembrance
each moment, as a tug on a rosary bead
while we hurry past, heedless of the mysteries

And, yet, every secret wants to be told
every shy creature to approach and trust us
if we patiently listen, with all of our senses.

This book can be enjoyed over an hour or two of reading, with many poems worth pausing to think about, reread, and return to in the future. Highly recommended.

Sublime
By Lori Ellison
Yahia Labadidi is a poet and aphorist of great literary and spiritual gifts. I also recommend his book of essays Trial by Ink. I don't buy very many books anymore (time to read the ones that I have) but this was an excellent choice.

The Political Economy of International Relations, by Robert Gilpin

After the end of World War II, the United States, by far the dominant economic and military power at that time, joined with the surviving capitalist democracies to create an unprecedented institutional framework. By the 1980s many contended that these institutions--the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (now the World Trade Organization), the World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund--were threatened by growing economic nationalism in the United States, as demonstrated by increased trade protection and growing budget deficits.

In this book, Robert Gilpin argues that American power had been essential for establishing these institutions, and waning American support threatened the basis of postwar cooperation and the great prosperity of the period. For Gilpin, a great power such as the United States is essential to fostering international cooperation. Exploring the relationship between politics and economics first highlighted by Adam Smith, Karl Marx, and other thinkers of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Gilpin demonstrated the close ties between politics and economics in international relations, outlining the key role played by the creative use of power in the support of an institutional framework that created a world economy.

Gilpin's exposition of the in.uence of politics on the international economy was a model of clarity, making the book the centerpiece of many courses in international political economy. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, when American support for international cooperation is once again in question, Gilpin's warnings about the risks of American unilateralism sound ever clearer.

From the Back Cover
This book is both a personal statement and a synthesis of certain recurrent and prevalent themes in the field of international political economy. Although I have endeavored to keep the personal and synthetic elements distinct from one another, I have presented my own views on selected questions of international political economy and have also incorporated those ideas and theories of others that are most relevant to the theses being developed.

About the Author
Robert Gilpin is the Eisenhower Professor of Public and International Affairs Emeritus at Princeton University. He is the author of many books, including "The Political Economy of International Relations" and "The Challenge of Global Capitalism: The World Economy in the Twenty-First Century" (both Princeton).

Thorough scholarship and somewhat prescient
By Ian Murray
This is an extremely pertinent book for the next millenium. It is also quite popular in policy circles inside the Beltway. It is an indeispensible text for all Americans concerned with the future of international trade and the ongoing pathologies of our current trade regimes and the power relations they sustain to the detriment of the vast majority of human beings and the planet. It is thorough and scholarly throughout. While it is best read with a cup of Joe on a rainy day, it is worth the time and pays rereading many times over in light of current events. It's only shortcoming is it's neglect of the ecological dimensions of international trade and politics, nevertheless, it is a book for all who care about the human future.

A multi-course meal to political economy
By A Customer
Robert Gilpin's in-depth coverage of the multi-faceted world
of political economy comes to fruition in tedium in the pages
of this book.

There is not a single author who puts together a traditional
or classical view of the enviornment, international relations,
economic policy, and strategy in such a comprehensive manner.

Gilpin shows his true scholarly intellect of those before him and
provides encouragement for those to follow.

An excellant work on political economics
By James Scott
Robert Gilpin's work is excellent addition to the study of political economics, albeit one that is starting to show its age 20 years after being written. This notwithstanding, the theoretical components of the book are mostly still valid and have been built upon by Gilpin in further works. As a matter of historical record and of economic history, it makes fascinating reading and it is especially interesting to consider the author's speculation as to the future of American hegemony prior to the fall of the Soviet Union. Obviously many of the authors fears were ill-founded, but it is interesting to note how different it could have all been. Additionally, many of the examples used, primarily dealing with the economic ascendancy of Japan, could today almost be replaced with China. It will be interesting to see whether this time it is the end of US hegemony or whether history will repeat itself.

Overall well worth the read.

Perhaps because 19th-century German writer Theodor Storm wrote mostly Novellen -- tightly sturctured long stories composed in lyrical prose -- little of his work is available in English. Hans and Heinz Kirch consists of three of these Novellen, two appearing for the first time in English translation...The title story tells of a battle between father and son on the Baltic coast of Germany. ""Immensee"" and ""Journey to Hallig"" are a folk-tale-influenced love story and a wanderer's tale, respectively."" -- Publishers Weekly.

Stories of the fault line where the continent of youthful imagination meets the adult continent of social class aspiration
By MidwesternGothic
Hans and Heinz Kirch with Immensee and Journey to a Hallig by Theodor Storm, translated by Denis Jackson and Anja Nauck, Introduction by Denis Jackson, published in 1999 by Angel Classics.

Artfully crafted poignant stories of ‘poetic realism’ colored by Storm’s interest in fairytales, folk songs, and folk stories and centered, sometimes via reminiscence, around the fault line where the continent of childhood and youth with its blended ecology of landscape and romantic imagination butts up against the adult continent with its very different blended ecology of landscape and worldly ambition, finance, and social class. I liked all three of these well-crafted novellas a great deal, though felt most moved by Immensee. I also read another translation of Immensee by James Wright included in The Rider on the White Horse (New York Review Books Classics). The Wright translation is more easily accessible for the modern reader whereas the Jackson and Nauck translation is more literary. Reading the Wright translation did help me to catch a few minor details or nuances I missed when I first read the Jackson and Nauck translation; however, I preferred the Jackson and Nauck translation for its more artful and antique style which I found much more fitting to both the nature of the story and the manner of the storytelling. Additionally, the Jackson and Nauck translation renders the short poems within the novella in rhyming verse form and they do a very nice job of doing so, whereas the Wright translation has them in prose where they are emptied of their lyrical quality and poetic effect. But one need not chose between these two translations. One can get them both with good justification, for Immensee is the only overlap between these two Theodor Storm collections.

The twenty-page Introduction by Denis Jackson is excellent. I took particular delight in the first two-and-a-half pages of the Introduction because of the interesting, useful, and concise conceptual and literary discussions therein (e.g., discussion of ‘poetic realism,’ the discussion of the descriptive distinction between Storm's ‘watercolor’ novellas and his ‘oil’ novellas). The rest of the Introduction provides an interesting account of Storm and his times as well as some discussion of the three stories included in this volume. The volume also contains thirty pages of notes that provide informative biographical and historical details. Printed on acid-free paper, the book is attractive and well-made. Highly recommended.

Simply beautiful stories
By Beppo
I read Immensee when I was 8 years old. It was a heavily abridged version and worse still terribly translated so much so that it lost original beauty. Then, I read it again in German for the first time in German Classes in high school, as many German language student have done. Prose style is simple but breathtakingly beautiful. In my opinion, this addition perfectly conveys and preserve the original feeling that I had I read it in German . It is so evocative that I intro and end of the story still reside in my mind. I can recite it word by word in German. Making a modern man can feel a momentary nostalgia explains well what kind of emotional power the story possesses. It is no wonder that generations of German writers have mentioned about this story.
In addition to Immensee, there are two more stories that are quintessential Storm. Strong regional color, Nostalgia, and simple but beautiful verses and proses in each story.
