For Pool Junkies With No Skill -- How to Become a Hustler

If you love to play pool and can't figure out how to play the angles on the table, this is your book. Even those who are only moderately interested in the game but who would like to ace their friends and relatives by surprising them with their previously hidden pool "chops," this is your book, too. Most people have no idea how to play pool so they bang the balls into each other hoping that something good will happen. If it does, it's pure luck. This book illustrates, with graphics, how to line up shots correctly, how to recognize when you have a good shot or a bad shot, and how to use your cue and the table to look like a pro. The secret to using this book correctly? Practice. Each of the 99 shots is illustrated and you can follow the shot like a recipe for success. Take one or two shots and practice them over and over again according to the instructions and amaze yourself with what you can accomplish. For Beginners and Pros trying to keep their edge

I discovered this book about 15 years ago, being an avid player since I was 15 I thought the book was very well written and not so detailed that it has nothing in it but charts and graphs. I put my pool cue down for a couple of years and my game suffered from it, I pulled the book back out and refreshed my brain and honestly within a few days I was playing back at my own top level. Its an older book, but the shots and " English " as well as other pointers are never outdated... Physics is Physics and Geometry are just facts.... Check it out, I've passed the book on to others who want to get better and I have seen their own games has improve by at least 50 % in a short time.

Nevertheless, Gandhi's life and thought had an enormous impact on the Indian nation, and he continues to be widely revered--known before and after his assassination as Mahatma, the Great Soul.

A solid introduction to Gandhi's life and thought

For those seeking a very brief introduction to Gandhi's life and thought, this ought to do the trick. At one point in my life I read intensely if briefly about Gandhi, reading a couple of dozen books by and on him. This book would not break into the books that I would most recommend, but it would be one that I would recommend as a possible first book. Parekh has a deep understanding of the context of Gandhi's thought, which was not purely Indian despite being largely grounded in Hinduism, with major outside influences.

The book is stronger on Gandhi's thought than his life. The biographical details are, in fact, quite minimal, but many books emphasize Gandhi the person so much more than Gandhi the thinker, this is a welcome correction. Although anyone wanting to know about Gandhi should immediately go on from this to read a good biography on Gandhi (the classic biography by Louis Fischer remains a great first read about Gandhi, though the best English language biography is that by Judith Brown), as well as Gandhi's own so-called autobiography, this gives one a glimpse into what made Gandhi click.

Anyone wanting to know about Gandhi should plan minimally on reading as well an anthology of Gandhi's own writings in addition to the autobiography (the three-volume edition edited by Iyer is the best), as well as the aforementioned books by Fischer and Brown. I also strongly recommend the book on Gandhi by Ved Mehta, which is deeply insightful and refutes many Western misunderstandings of his thought. Gandhi is one of the most inspirational figures of the past century. The impact on my own life has been considerable. It was because of him that I became a vegetarian and through his reverence for life I became deeply interested in showing respect for all humans and nonhumans. Definitely read this book, but plan on reading much more. Gandhi is not one of the great systematic thinkers of our age, but he is one of the most moral and visionary. He also combined idealism and pragmatism more successfully than any other figure I can name.

Organized, thorough, and concise

The first half or so of the book is dedicated to a chronological biography. The second half has sections dedicated to the different facets of Gandhi's contributions.

Not only was Gandhi a remarkable man, but I think Parekh does his memory justice with an equally thoughtful and evenhanded treatment of his legacy.

A non-hagiographic look at Gandhi

This book is commendable, in part because it refuses to view Gandhi through the gauze-covered lenses of romanticism and cheap sentiment. Parekh is short and direct, but instead of concentrating on the Mahatma's biography and political career it highlights Gandhi's place as a thinker -- as a political theorist, social critic, philosopher of religion, and cultural visionary. Parekh does not indulge in hagiography: his exposition is fair and broadly sympathetic, yet never blind to criticisms that might be plausibly leveled at Gandhi as an intellectual figure. The result is often disarming, in two distinct ways. First, Gandhi does not always come across as an infallible oracle of sacred insight. And second, when his arguments and analyses seem most convincing, they are often anything but congenial to the received socio-political wisdom of advanced modernity.

Gandhi's limitations are displayed most clearly in Parekh's account of his religious thinking. The religious environment of Gandhi's childhood was, as Parekh puts it, "eclectic:" his mother was associated with the syncretistic Pranami sect of Hinduism, which venerated the Koran as a holy book along with Vedantic scripture, and his father, a chief administrator of the court of Porbandar, freely associated with Jains and Christians. This cosmopolitan religious background inclined Gandhi toward a position that contemporary theologians have dubbed "religious pluralism" — the conviction that all religions are valid paths toward transcendence and the holy, differing only in the vocabulary in which the sacred order is described and the perspective from which it is appropriated. Thus, as Parekh describes it, "For Gandhi, Hinduism, Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and other religions were all based upon specific conceptions of a personal God. They involved distinct forms of prayer, worship, rituals, and beliefs about his nature and relation to the world, and were all "sectarian." The "pure" or "true" religion lay beyond them, and had nothing to do with organization, belief, and rituals. It consisted in nothing more and nothing less than the belief that the universe was pervaded and governed by the cosmic power, and the decision to organize one's entire life accordingly. It involved living in the constant, intimate, and unmediated presence of the cosmic spirit, and represented the purest form of spirituality." (p. 32)

Really Shocked By This Book!

I've been a professional Illustrator for 4 years now, and before then an avid student of art. But during all that time, I've bought piles and piles of "How To Draw" books, namely by Christopher Hart. I was in the book store one day and saw this one and almost just bi-passed it as just another amaturise attempt at trying to make a "How to Draw Cartoon" book, the cover being the main turn-off.

In my 8+ years of buying these types of books, this is the first time I was simply astonished by what they were presenting; MOVEMENT!

It is rare that anyone write's these books with any mention on how an artist can try to achieve a sense of force and movement, and that is why I so highly recommend this book. The incoporation of how to apply the knowledge to comic book work was also great, not to mention the fact that Tom Bancroft also had the "Assignements" in the book which gives you a real look into what can go into creating charachters.

From novice to seasoned professional, this truley is a great book!

This is the best book you'll find on understanding how character design works.

If you're researching this book chances are that you've already got some experience reading art and animation how-to books or know somebody who has. There are many books on cartooning and animation but there has been a frustrating lack of material that really digs into the meat of the creative process behind character design. Most books fall into categories that either narrowly focus on concept art from specific productions, or they discuss all facets of animation and cartooning and relegate character design to a single chapter and / or style. This book recognizes that educational void and happily is helmed by a man who not only can draw, but can explain the REASONS behind the stylistic choices employed by the best designers out there.

The REASONING is an important point that cannot be stressed highly enough and is what pushes this book beyond just another how-to-draw endeavor and becomes something that should be mandatory study material for anyone involved in the character creation process, from cartoonists, animators, sculptors, and 3D modelers, to storytellers, marketers, and producers. Tom Bancroft explains the esthetics of design appeal and allows you to better understand how your choices affect the audience's psychological response to the character's look. Going further you'll learn how to take that design awareness and modify your efforts to fit a wide range of stylistic applications so that your romanticly-loveable-yet-monstrous-and-scary frankenstein character can be drawn for an action-drama scenario or a slapstick-sendup. You'll still have to figure out for yourself however what the boss means when he asks for you to make your work "more hip and edgy!".

This book is filled to the brim with excellent and inspiring artwork and text which is both easy to comprehend and is satisfyingly complete. Not your average "How To Draw" book!!

I got a chance to peruse a pre-release copy of this book and I really liked what I saw.

Tom is a former Disney animator and does a great job of breaking down the elements of good character design. What I really like about his book is that it isn't merely a "How to draw like me" book. He teaches principles that anybody can put to use in their own style.

Not only did he ask Rob Corley to write a chapter (his business partner), but he asked several guest artists to submit their interpretations of the same character. Among the guests are Peter deSeve, Mark Henn, Bill Amend and Jack Davis... yes, the Jack Davis. A very diverse collection of styles, yet with one thing in common: they create excellent designs brimming with personality and attitude.

Tom's point in the book is that good character design, regardless of style, comes down to clarity, appeal and knowing your character inside and out.

Fantastic!!!

I just finished reading this book and it has helped me tremendously. I now know which direction to go in regards to Lewis' works. I'm not quite ready for "Mere Christianity", "The Four Loves", or even "Suprised by Joy." I know that based on the excerpts I read from this great book. I will now read "The Pilgrim's Regress" It should be good. I reccomend this book for anyone wanting to know more about Lewis and his works. Peter Kreeft does a fine job.

Truly great primer

You can find a primer much better than this. Lewis may well be the most influential Christian of this century, and deservedly so. His writings should be read by all Christians. No one has better given Christians a real sense of how the present (the shadows) and eternity (the real thing) interrelate.

Train Lovers Basic

These original format books are charming. The stories, while they usually have a moral, are not heavy handed. The art is lovely and appears to be original to the vintage. This series introduces new characters without the rampant commercialism the is so apparent in the more recently written Thomas books. I've read all of these stories many, many times, and they still charm both myself and my son.

Original Thomas the Tank Engine Story book

My 2 1/2 year old Grandson adores Thomas and Friends and collects the engines. His favorite is Gordon so he is very happy to have a train book that is all about Gordon. He listened carefully to 2 stories this morning and is fascinated with this original version of the Railway Series by the Rev. W. Audry. It is a contrast with his other books that have been the newer versions of Thomas and Friends.

I love that this is the original oldy-timey version of the Thomas stories. My son loves the illustrations. The size is easy to handle. There are about 3-4 stories per book.

About the Author
Dr. Nahikian-Nelms is currently a professor of clinical health and rehabilitation sciences and director of the dietetic internship in the Division of Medical Dietetics at The Ohio State University. At Ohio State, she also serves as nutrition faculty for the LEND (Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities) program and the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center. She has practiced as a dietitian and public health nutritionist for over 25 years. She is the lead author for the textbooks: _Nutrition Therapy and Pathophysiology_; _Medical Nutrition Therapy: A Case Study Approach_; and _Food and Culture_. Additionally, she has contributed to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Nutrition Care Manual for the sections on gastrointestinal disorders and is the author of numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and chapters for other texts. Her clinical expertise focuses on development and practice of evidence-based nutrition therapy for a variety of conditions including diabetes, gastrointestinal disease, and hematology/oncology for both pediatrics and adult populations, as well as the development of alternative teaching environments for students within their clinical training. Recently, her scholarly work has focused on the use and development of simulation activities as a component of the dietetic curriculum. Dr. Nahikian-Nelms has received the Governor's Award for Outstanding Teaching for the State of Missouri, Outstanding Dietetic Educator in Missouri and Ohio, and the PRIDE award from Southeast Missouri State University in recognition of her teaching. Dr. Nahikian-Nelms has previously served in her district and state dietetic associations as well as on the ACEND board and as a program reviewer.

SARA LONG ROTH, PhD, RD, is Professor in the Department of Animal Science, Food and Nutrition and Director, Didactic Program in Dietetics at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Prior to obtaining her PhD in health education, she practiced as a clinical dietitian for 11 years. Her specialty areas are medical nutrition therapy, nutrition education, and food and nutrition assessment. She is an active leader in national, state, and district dietetic association's where she has served in numerous elected and appointed positions, including the Commission on Accreditation of Dietetics Education, and Commission on Dietetic Registration. Dr. Long is coauthor of Understanding Nutrition Therapy and Pathophysiology, Medical Nutrition Therapy: A Case Study Approach, Foundations and Clinical Applications of Nutrition: A Nursing Approach, and Essentials of Nutrition and Diet Therapy. Dr. Long has received various awards and honors for teaching, including Outstanding Dietetic Educator (ADA) and Outstanding Educator for the College of Agricultural Sciences.

Missing and repeated pages and case studies!

This book has a helpful hands on learning approach, HOWEVER be warned it was manufactured poorly! Case studies 16, 17, 18, and most of 15 were missing and case study 7-11 were repeated in my book. This is extremely frustrating to find out half way into the semester:(
