Great read...Real...Entertaining

Good from start to finish. The author writes in a very smooth style that is easy to read. Each chapter end makes you want to get to the new chapter. The author is brutally honest about his short-comings but does so in a very entertaining way. The author details his life in prison for bank robbery...all the more interesting because of his past as an attorney and his struggles with mental illness. I look forward to more from this author.

About the Author
Erich Goode is Sociology Professor Emeritus at Stony Brook University and Visiting Scholar at New York University; he also taught at the University of Maryland, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and the University of North Carolina. Professor Goode received his PhD in Sociology from Columbia. He is the author of ten books, including Deviance in Everyday Life (2002, Waveland Press), Moral Panics (with Nachman Ben-Yehuda, 2nd edition, 2009, Wiley-Blackwell), and Drugs in American Society (7th edition, 2008, McGraw-Hill), as well as the editor of seven anthologies of collected or original writings. During his career, he received a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Lady Davis Teaching Fellowship, the President's Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the SUNY-wide Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching. Goode has published articles in a wide range of venues, including academic journals (Social Problems, Deviant Behavior, The American Journal of Sociology), newspapers (The Washington Post, Newsday), literary journals (Raritan, The Palo Alto Review), and magazines (The Skeptical Inquirer, The Evergreen Review). Professor Goode is married and lives in New York City.

Very informative - just like Mark's in-person Scrum classes

I was able to attend one of Mark's Certified Scrum Master classes through his company, Platinum Edge, and it was such a great course I had to buy this Scrum for Dummies book to follow. Similar to Mark's in-person teaching style, this book was extremely informative and easy to understand. I also bought Agile Project Management for Dummies and am excited to read that too.

Most Dummies books are good but this one refers to templates that can be downloaded from their web site. Apparently the only way you get access is if you buy it from THEIR web site at a higher price. Also, once you hit the web site you can never un-register and you get a barrage of email ads. The product line has fallen significantly from their earlier glory.

About the Author
Lars Tvede was born in Copenhagen in 1957. He has a Master of Engineering and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. Tvede presents a good, intermediate-level overview of market trading from a trend-following perspective. He also describes several indicators which are useful in assessing the "temperature" of the trading environment. However, aside from the clarity of his writing and the logical development of his argument, he offers little which is new to the experienced market practitioner.
Also, please note that this book was published in two editions. The first edition successfully views the mechanics of trading through the emotional filters which affect our buy-sell decisions. The second edition is a complete rewrite which morphs the book into a nebulous psychology text that is only occasionally related to the trading process. You would be well-served to avoid this second edition! First edition - 4 stars; second edition - 1 star.

Excellent! Can be a classic

If somebody reads one book, makes minor revision and prints it, that's plagiarism. If he/she reads ten, that's scholarship. If the number goes to a hundred, it is mastership, my appreciation of the author and his masterpiece.
There are countless books on either history of the investment market, or trading psychology, or technical analysis. This book is a rare breed that incorporates several dimensions into one. Chart reading, with elaboration of four basic market rules (1. market is ahead 2. market is irrational 3. environment is chaotic 4. charts are self fulfilling) interrelated with different schools of psychological theories (Behaviorist, Gestalt, Cognitive, Psychoanalysis), form the stem of this beautiful book with vivid "green leaves" of writings on momentum, sizing, turning points.....
One great strength of it is that one does not need to know much about psychology to understand what the author tries to tell, because tables of examples are abundant to let you know when you have made specific mistakes. He does not teach you how to correct them, but it does lead the way of self improvement and really help to enlighten your trading style.
It should be in any serious trader's bookshelf for fast recollection of some important trading principles, a regular dosage for cleansing mental dirt accumulated throughout his/her harsh trading life.

If you Can Get this Book, then Get It!

Absolutely one of the best books I have ever read. This book got me started in investing. What an incredible overview of business cycles and waves and economic indicators. Gives such readable ananlysis on how and why our economy moves. Makes you want to watch M1,M2 and M3. But the best part of this book is his ability to tie in mass pyschology from the tulip bust in Holland to John Maynard Keynes' discussion of "to the sixth degree." How you need to predict what people are predicting the market will do. And then it masterfully sums it all up in an excellent discussion of chaos theory and the benefits and limits of using charts to predict. Makes you discount anything but the next day weather forecasts. I went and read about 5 more scientific treatisties on chaos theory. Want a foundation upon which to invest and invest with shrewdenss. READ THIS BOOK! Find it in a library, anywhere.

Claudia Roden, author of The Book of Jewish Food, has done more than simply compile a cookbook of Jewish recipes--she has produced a history of the Jewish diaspora, told through its cuisine. The book's 800 recipes reflect many cultures and regions of the world, from the Jewish quarter of Cairo where Roden spent her childhood to the kitchens of Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Both Ashkenazi and Sepharidic cooking are well represented here: hallah bread, bagels, blintzes, and kugels give way to tabbouleh, falafel, and succulent lamb with prunes, which are, in turn, succeeded by such fare as Ftut (Yemeni wedding soup) and Kahk (savory bracelets).

Interwoven throughout the text are Roden's charming asides--the history of certain foods, definitions (Kaimak, for instance, is the cream that rises to the top when buffalo milk is simmered), and ways of preparing everything from an eggplant to a quince. In addition, Roden tells you everything you've ever wanted to know about Jewish dietary laws, what the ancient Hebrews ate, and the various holidays and festivals on the Jewish calendar. Detailed sections on Jewish history are beautifully illustrated with archival photographs of families, towns, and, of course, food. The Book of Jewish Food is one that any serious cook--Jewish and non-Jewish alike--would gladly have (and use often) in the kitchen.

As the biblical echo of the title indicates, this collection is as instructive and comprehensive as a textbook. Roden (Mediterranean Cookery, etc.) divides the territory in two parts: "The Ashkenazi World" and "The Sephardi World." She chronicles the lives of Jews all over the world in short segments on unusual Jewish communities past and present, such as those of Salonika, Greece, and China. These sections, and the many other notes on subjects ranging from the New York Deli to salt herring are gems. Recipes are numerous and diverse: Yellow Split Pea Soup with Frankfurters, Pumpkin Tzimmes, Small Red Kidney Beans with Sour Plum Sauce, Cold Stuffed Vine Leaves, and Fish Balls in Tomato Sauce. Some highlights include the chapter on Sephardic breads (Algerian Anise Bread, North African Sweet Breads with Nuts and Raisins) and the one on Ashkenazic desserts (Mandelbrot, Hanukah Jam Doughnuts). All of this can be a little overwhelming at times (and, as Roden acknowledges in the introduction, many Jewish foods simply reflected the cuisines of the places where Jews were living rather than their own specific culture). Yet with few omissions (e.g., the instructions for making pasta specify rolling out the dough "as thin as possible" but don't explain how), Roden proves a practiced, reliable guide.

Roden (Good Food of Italy, LJ 10/15/90) is an authority on Mediterranean and Middle Eastern food. Her exhaustively researched and impressive new book is obviously a labor of love. Born in Egypt, she offers a wide-ranging exploration of Jewish culture and food, with more than 800 recipes from Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jews all over the world. She begins with an extensive introductory section on Jewish identity, kosher laws, biblical history, and holy and holidays, then deals separately with Ashkenazim and Sephardim. Faced with dozens of versions of both traditional and unusual dishes from different communities, she sought to present the best, whether from a scholar in the Middle East or from a housewife in London; for some dishes, however, she gives more than one recipe, along with variations. The text is packed with sidebars and boxes on cultural history, culinary anthropology, and other relevant topics. Other good books on Jewish cooking that appeared recently include Gil Mark's The World of Jewish Cooking (LJ 9/96) and Robert Sternberg's The Sephardic Kitchen (LJ 9/96), but Roden's is a far more ambitious work, invaluable as both a cookbook and a reference. Essential.

One of my all time favorite books! Delicious recipes

One of my all time favorite books! Delicious recipes, plenty for my vegetarian lifestyle. The stories and Jewish history make the recipes so much more interesting than if they had been just a series of recipes. I especially love that the recipes are not rigid. I play with them and most always have very good results. Roden's warmth shines through this lovely book.

Way beyond average

An extraordinary book, much more than a cookbook. It presents a world of Jewish history but in such a way that it is relevant to the food, the recipes being provided. You get the atmosphere of the kitchens in which the recipes might typically have been made and what social framework they were part of. The volume is divided into Ashkenazi and Sephardic sections, so it really gives the reader a world of Jewish life and cookery. The recipes themselves are very practical and workable for a modern kitchen. The ones I've tried have worked brilliantly. With its great diversity of content and the sheer number of recipes, it is an unusually rich offering, and it turns out, a very competent one.

I bought this book for myself, but someone very close to me came over the day it arrived and wanted it so badly (and begged), so I couldn't say "no!" Now I must buy it again... and hide it when friends come over!

OK but outdated but I already knew that

This publication is the one they send when you join the Gold Prospectors Association of America (GPAA). However, they update the book every couple of years. I bought this old edition just to see what it's like. Membership in the GPAA is $80, if I remember, and it includes the latest edition of the Guide. After seeing this old edition and talking to some weekend prospector friends I joined the GPAA and got the latest edition.
I might have given this 2 stars instead of 3, but I knew it wasn't going to be real useful except to see what the current edition might be like. I wouldn't buy another copy; don't even need this one now.

How terrorists seek to define themselves

This is a unique book and a vital one if you are interested in terrorist groups. The book has a short chapter on each group, providing a paragraph or two on the background and history of the group, a timeline, a high-quality line drawing of the group's logo with color definitions and the full-color logo. It goes further, explaining the symbology behind the logo.

These logos are important to each group's self-identity, as well as to the identity the group wishes to broadcast to its friends and enemies. It includes a wide range of active groups, from al-Qaeda to the Red Brigades. It does not include ALL the groups, as not all of them have branding and there is some disagreement as to whether other groups are terror groups. The book includes a list of terror groups, including those not featured. A very handy book to have. Also, a unique study of this particular kind of branding.

timely handbook for identification of terrorist groups

The Steven Heller doing the Foreword is the noted designer and design critic who as former art director at the N. Y. Times has written or co-authored over 100 books on design and popular culture. In the three-page Foreword, he briefly covers the purpose of logos in general, the grounds for critiquing the logos of the groups whose logos appear in the book (e. g., cliche, too many guns or eagles), and compares the logos to those of the Catholic Church, Coca-Cola, Apple, and other major established cultural presences.

Logotypes and iconography are intended not only as a means of communication--often in the simple terms of "sending a message"--and identity in the public and international sphere, but also as a means of internal, often secret or guarded identification, focus, and cohesion for members of a particular group.

Artur Beifuss is a counter-terrorist analyst for the United Nations. Francesco Bellini is a graphic designer involved in branding for companies and institutions. In Beifuss's Introduction, he notes the logos as a way of branding for a group. Beifuss also notes the book's purpose to help understand by a survey of the 64 logos collected mostly from open sources such as websites "why certain visual elements are preferred over others [and the] certain meanings, emotions, and values" attached to such elements.

The schema used for accomplishing the book's purpose is the same for each "logo". Under the heading of the respective group is its name in the script of its national language (many in Arabic) followed by the translation or approximation in English. Underneath this is a brief overview of the group, and underneath this a chronology of it major terrorist acts. The second page is a plain, black-and-white, drawing of the group's logotype with lines to notes pointing out its features above a chart breaking down the colors and associated pantone coding for each. The last, third, page is a full-color picture of the logotype with explanations of the meaning of its colors, elements, and symbols.

The book would be used by most as a reference to find out more about Middle East and other terrorist groups defined as groups using violence for political or ideological aims when specific or related groups were mentioned in the media, for example. Since many of the groups are similar, the details of each start to run together when used as a study text. However one regards this work, it has a distinctive, notable, self-evidently relevant and useful place in contemporary studies of the global terrorism.

I bought this because I like to seed my bookshelf with some talking pieces. Little did I know that this book is ABSURDLY well researched. Like... whomever put this together is probably on some watch lists now. This is actually a bizarre and off center perspective on a topical issue in contemporary politics.

Good book.

This book was the assigned reading material for my engineering technology course. Its primary purpose was to give us an `introduction' to fluid related concepts, and in that area I would say it was very successful. This books writing style is extremely easy to follow, and unlike some of my other textbooks was actually enjoyable to read. It provided step by step instructions on how to solve problems, and also offered more than enough problems for the students to solve themselves. The only issue I have with this book relates to the rather limited examples it provides. In its solutions it illustrates how to solve the simple problems, but negates to do the more complicated ones which sometimes left me clueless on how to proceed. This book is also rather expansive and does not go very deep into the subject.. If your looking for a good introduction book for your course, or some extra learning material this is a great choice. If you're a more advanced reader, I suggest you look elsewhere.

I am the type of person who generally hates the way that texts are written. I have always said, that if I were to write a text, it would be this way. The whole class talks about this book, we love it at at the University here.

Engineering books

Many reviewers will say that Mr. Mott's material is too basic for engineering students or actual engineers. The issue is that if you are a currently engineer, with few or a lot of years of experiencie, you'd probably already noted, that all concepts you learned with any book you used (advanced or basic), or any professor that taught you (good or bad), all converge directly to the same concepts that Mr. Mott explains so easy in his books (WATCH I USE PLURAL). What will make a difference is the undergraduate or postgraduate you are majoring in to say that a book works or not. For example is not the same a course of Heat Transfer for Mechanical Engineers than for Chemical Engineers, even if topics are the same, because the first ones get involved into the macro subjects while the second ones into the micro ones, and not all the books covered both topics at once. For mechanical or electromechanical engineers, this is a book you should have. I have 13 years of experience in the mechanical engineering field and I was taught in class with the Streeter's Fluid Mechanics book by a dutch professor that was in charged of Wind Power Engineering Machinery Design (all of those who know the Wind Power growth around the world, know that Holland is one of the countries ahead in this topic), and after analyzing in between Mott's book and Streeter's, there is just one difference: Mr. Mott knows how to put the concepts into written words.
