This catalogue of 150 photos drawn from an exhibition at Manhattan's Museum of Modern Art is at once a retrospective of America's cultural ambiguities, a pageant of visual technology, a paean to antiestablishment photo-artists like Robert Frank and Gary Winogrand and a meticulous register of source data primarily of interest to specialists. Kismaric, curator of MoMA's department of photography, traces the photography of American politics from early devotional portraits of John Quincy Adams, Lincoln, et al., through the interplay of political and photojournalistic aims that came with faster film, handier cameras and personalities like Teddy Roosevelt, FDR and John F. Kennedy. This panoply has now dwindled, the author finds, to a dull, security-minded photo policy on the part of most modern politicians concerned with controlling their images. Some of the photos included here of Lincoln and others appear to have been enhanced technically, with telling effect.

In this book, published in conjunction with a Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) exhibition of the same title, Kismaric has selected 150 duotone photographs that build a chronology of American photography of politicians, from the carefully staged portraits of the 19th century to more contemporary images, generated by motor-driven 35 mm cameras that can grab odd moments of face and form. Kismaric is curator of MOMA's Department of Photography, and true to her museum's tradition she offers a crisp and informative text that follows the evolution of the depiction of American politicians in black and white. A surprising range of emotions are shown in these politicians; early shots carry the visual message of the absurd, while the much-discussed "photo opportunity" is rarely seen later in this collection. Recommended for academic, museum, and public libraries.

A Great Gift for Election Day!

"American Politicians" is a visual exploration of one of our country's defining insitutions. Curated as a traveling exhibition and accompanying book by Susan Kismaric of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, I had the good fortune to see this show first hand when it made a stop at Washington's Corcoran Gallery of Art.
Several of the seminal images of American Politics included in this book are surely tattooed to your mind's eye -- Truman playing piano with Lauren Bacall sensually sitting atop it; the classic "Dewey Defeats Truman" shot; the assasination of RFK; LBJ flicking-off someone as he boards an airplane, much to JFK's chagrin; and, "The Loneliest Job in the World," George Tames' famous image of Kennedy standing over his desk, head hung low, during the Cuban Missile Crisis. However, it's the lesser known works that are truly fascinating. The Brown Brothers photograph of Theodore Roosevelt, which graces this book's cover, at first glance seems like a perfectly choreographed moment, complete with a background-filling American flag and Teddy in one his signature, triumphant gestures. But look closely and you'll spy a pair of crutches in the picture's center. That's right, FDR wasn't the only Roosevelt who had difficulty walikng under his own power. It's hard to believe with today's media feeding frenzies that photographer's used to respect political leader's private lives and personal shortcomings; the fact is this image probably never ran in the newspaper.
These are the types of subtle images and contexts that are dealt with in "American Politicians." Robert Frank's "Convention Hall-Chicago" (that guy with the cigar and sun glasses really runs the country, doesn't he?), Lee Friedlander's abstract self-portraits in storefront windows (which happen to have portraits of the candidates in them), and Garry Winogrand's sweeping shots that show that he is interested as much in the crowd as the candidate. Some of the photographs are not subtle at all, but very funny because of their political awkwardness -- LBJ showing-off his gall bladder scar, Nixon looking at his watch while shaking hands with the crowd, and Dukakis driving the infamous tank.
The book concludes with some very revealing portraits, of Senators Byrd, Schroeder and Thurmond by Judith Joy Ross, that summarize this book perfectly. The Senators present themselves the way they want to be seen, and the way they've been taught and coached to do all their lives. Yet they are human and vulnerable, despite their power and prestige, just like all of us little people.

Loved the recipes. The juices were very easy and don't use any artificial sweeteners. I enjoy throwing in all the ingredients and watching them blend, but more so, reading about the benefits. You can actually feel which juices do what. Some provide energy kick and others actually clear the mind. My favorites for effect are relaxing cleanses but taste-wise Deep Sable Slushie & Papaya Slash are the the best!

These juice recipes are amazing! I'm always looking for new juice recipes to try and this book hit the spot. My favorite is the immune serum. I LOVE asparagus! Although the Cherry Berry is a near 2nd. You will feel (and look) a lot better if you continue to use the recipes in this book. It's a great natural and fun way to improve your overall health.

Finding Verity is a moving story about a young man's survival and search for truth.

After being abandoned by his mother, thirteen-year-old Puck Scarsi follows Fin, a homeless man, into the underground bowels of New York City.

"I had speculated about the tunnels before I'd gone under, and I'd cheerfully imagined dragons, wizards and monsters. But once I set foot under the city, my childlike fantasies were replaced with something else, a kind of fearful exhilaration, addictive in a way, but frightful, too. A warning.

"I had no idea what lurked in the shadows. Even though my eyes had adjusted to the dark, it was difficult to differentiate between shadows, some being pitch black, others dark gray. I tried to convince myself that the tunnel was no worse than the city at night, but I knew that was not true."

Fin knows the tunnels are no place for teens, so he escorts Puck to Child Services. An escape from an abusive foster family, leads Puck to an unlikely adoption and early success as a novelist.

Ten years later, on a visit to Central Park, Puck rescues an elderly woman from a brutal attack. A friendship develops, and Puck reveals his troubled past and his longing to reconnect with Fin. One day, Puck returns to the tunnels in search of his friend.

"I lowered myself into the underground's netherworld. I was back! I had returned to the underbelly of the biggest city in the world, submerging myself into a world of darkness where evil flourished, where most people would never go. A place where staying too long could prove detrimental

I couldn't put it down

I don't know where to begin, this book captured my attention early and never let go. There was more than one mystery going on and I didn't see the ending coming at all. There were clues, but I never picked up on them.
I loved Puck, even as broken as he was, he was still a hero. I followed Puck through his trials, imaginary and real, trying to figure out what else happened to him to scar him even more than his awful childhood. And I loved Ellen for her kindness and gentleness with him. An unlikely pair, but they needed each other.
I knew there was something I was missing as I read, but even with the clues, I didn't figure it out. I finished this book at 2am because I had to know the ending and couldn't sleep until I did.
The characters were real people with everyday and extraordinary problems. Something we all can relate to. Some things in our lives affect only us, others affect many. So it is with this book.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
I should say that even though Ms. Nelson and I share the same last name, we are not related.

I love a great book that I can't put down

If you do anything get Finding Verity and you'll be happy you did. I started it at work one day because we were slow, continued it when I got home that night and finished it sitting in the parking lot the next morning before going into my office.

Finding Verity kepted me hooked throughout the whole book. I wanted to know what was going to happen one page after the next and never was I dissapointed. I loved all the characters, the story line, the beginning, the middle, and the end. I also see where there could be a sequel.

The author, Faith Friese Nelson did an awesome job writing this so do yourself favor and purchase Finding Verity. I promise you won't be dissapointed.

Once I began the book, I had to keep trying to find time to get back to it. The author provides clues along the way to the "unknowns", but there were still surprises ... Story moves along well and keeps the reader engaged. Enjoyed it!

Book holds pretty well after 80 years

This book, written by historian Eileen Power in 1924, and trying the then novel approach of looking at history through the lives of common people, holds up pretty well. Only the chapter on Marco Polo has aged somewhat (today's historians are much more skeptical on whether Polo even visited China, given the number of inaccuracies in his book; this problem is too complex to be dealt here). The rest of the chapters are very good in bringing to our eyes the lives of people who lived so long ago and in a very different society. I think the best chapter is the first one, about Bodo the frankish peasant. It is the only character on the book that lived before the 1000s, and that's a bit of a problem, as so much of the people in the book are from the late middle ages (but then, I suppose Power has very few sources from the period between the 6th and 10th centuries, with the exception of the carolingian reign, a problem historians still have today). All in all, a good book on medieval everyday life that holds up pretty well.

Bringing the medieval middle class and poor to life

These are genuinely endearing stories of individuals of medieval Europe who were not royalty or aristocracy. Power gleans details of the lives of these people from numerous sources, and, at least in the case of the peasant, Bodo, uses these sources to create a composite character, due to the lack of sufficient historical information about one individual.

Powers describes the lives, homes, general living conditions and practices, the towns and villages, and the working and leasure time of her subjects. With varying degrees of success, Powers is able to bring three-dimensional figures to life, and at the end of this work, one feels like one is leaving new friends.

Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys cultural history or simply wants a better idea of medieval life.

This study examines the use of English in Switzerland from a multilingual perspective based on a corpus of 400 interviews collected in the German speaking Canton of Zurich. It presents a framework for explaining the linguistic interaction that arises as a result of the use of a �globalizing� language in a multilingual context. It has given the relationships that obtain between the various Swiss national languages a hierarchical character. The proposed Swiss framework indicates - viewed through a macro-sociolinguistic lens - that the present linguistic situation in Switzerland seems to reflect a growing symbiotic relationship between English and the Swiss vernaculars.

Agnieszka Stępkowska received her PhD from Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań, in 2004. She is a lecturer at the School of English, the University of Social Sciences in Warsaw, Poland. Her research interests focus on translation studies, multilingualism and the sociology of language. She has published a book on English loanwords in Polish naval vocabulary and numerous papers on various topics.
