Great study guide

I have completed 8 of the 24 chapters so far and have found the instructions very easy to follow and the material useful. There are hands-on instructions for 3-4 exercises each chapter, using data that comes on a CD with the book.

Covers most of what was in the exam...

In reading this book it was painfully (sometimes confusingly) obvious that is is a first edition of the book. There are numerous typos and inaccuracies in the book which one would hope will be corrected in future editions. All in all it does what it is meant to do, preparing someone to take the ESRI exam.

I doubt I will go for certification - but it brings up so many things - that I have had not heard about - that will be useful for us. That in itself s well worth the money spent on this book. Lots of free how tos on the ESRI website. The ideas are here.

Good reference but not good for teaching yourself

This is in reference to the hard-cover 3rd edition.

The book is good for reference, with just enough detail to be useful in every topic of materials science. You don't normally find atomic structure, microscopy, dislocation theory and fracture mechanics in one volume. It even has basic thermodynamics and diffusion. BUT because it attempts to be comprehensive, it doesn't have enough room to go into depth in all the topics.

I think this book should be titled "Introduction to Materials Science, before the nano-polymer revolution." I think it would be a better title.

I think this is how the book was written:
1. Take a intro to materials book
2. take out electro-opti-magnetic properties
3. add fracture mechanics.
4. make it thicker.

If you want to learn the subject, I think there are better books that are easier to read. But if you want to pull it off your shelf to read bits and pieces, this is pretty good.

Slightly Disappointed in 4th Ed.

I love materials science and as a bibliophile I anticipated the release this new edition for months. Surely for that price and the 15 year interim since the last edition, I expected a grand volume updated with multicolored illustrations, supplementary sidebars, interactive CD, example problems - sometime suitable for bedtime reading at my wife's side. But alas.

Well, at least the 4th Ed. has a nicer cover, and some of the typos were corrected. The content is still excellent even though the authors had the audacity to omit two chapters on fracture mechanics "to increase the focus of the text" - okay.

My advise: Buy the 3rd edition instead. You'll be getting more for less.

NOT a Good Learning Tool for Physical Metallurgy

This book is honestly one of the worst books that I have encountered in my academic career. It offers very little explanation on actual concepts, calculations, and relevancy of topics. In addition, the provided pictures are confusing, and the suggested homework problems refer to concepts and terms that are not explained in the text. I have had to continually refer to other textbooks to understand the material and complete homework problems. While this book may be useful for researchers, I would not recommend this book to anyone that is starting to learn Physical Metallurgy.

The Ribbon That Wraps Us

Ah, Romance and Rust. Here are the poems of a woman in love, newly married, experiencing love through the eyes of a poet, parsing romance into its various lusters, summing it to its shimmering total.

These poems do not describe love merely as fairy tale--though there is the wondrous image of jumping the constellations hand in hand with the beloved--but offer visuals as accessible as Merlot sipped together from a single glass, breakfast bacon sizzling in a skillet or stolen from a plate, a street of jacarandas, a roof full of rain. Romance in simple things--"Loving you is the quiet of the seasons."--seen through the filter of her love for her husband, the poet Jeffrey C. Alfier.

Here, in the poet's "gray quiet splintered silence," you will hear love's echoes. And when the poet speaks of "...all the words / already written or newly written..." as "...the ribbon that wraps us, every day," you will believe her.

Romance and Rust by Tobi Alfier is simply beautiful, a celebration of love and her very recent marriage to Jeff Alfier. I am struck by the simplicity and loveliness of this collection of love poems, and love poems as so many of us know are difficult to write without sliding into sentimentality. I loved these lines from "Literary Love": "He held my hand in the bookstore and all the words in the books danced." Simply magical, and even more so when one remembers the newly married Jeff and Tobi Alfier are both accomplished poets. More magic and wonder tiptoes in through the fairy tale like lines from "The Meeting": "A mouse chewed a hole/ through the backpack of my mind, and scrambled/ all the dreams living there./ Its little feet left bruises./ And stopped my watch./ That I love you did not/ get chewed away. The magic is there, a lucid magical quality that dwells in these poems and always, always grounds us once more in love--a love which Tobi Alfier indicates is timeless and imbedded in her soul as can be seen in these lines, also from "The Meeting": I am afraid of the dark/ but I could have found you/ in the dark/ before we'd even met./ I would not have been afraid. For those who need reminding that love can and does last--with the right person, there are many moments in these poems that offer a wisdom that could only come from a love that has endured through the years like these lines from "Midnight Meditation," lines that also hint of the pain of a temporary separation: It will be a month of lonely evenings/ she said, we see the same moon/ but not the same dawn/ only she will/ smell the ocean.

I have deeply enjoyed reading this lovely and wise collection of poems and I highly recommend that all poets and lovers--or anyone who has spent time taking long walks or gazing at a sunset over the ocean or an open field, buy this book, read it. And take your lover's hand.

What can I say about “Romance and Rust”, Tobi Alfier's New & Selected poems? When reading her poetry, one feels a simple eloquence that resounds through someone who is in love with not only her man, but always takes every moment to appreciate what some may call the minutae in life. Indeed the details create the beauty and wisdom of her life and words; her intricate observations and range of subjects from humanity to Merlot to a mouse are witty, hopeful and alive. This is a poet well worth watching, reading and following.

Elevated to the peerage by King Louis-Philippe, Hugo played an active role in French politics through the 1848 Revolution and into the Second and Third Republics. Hugo died in 1885, revered not only for his influence on French literature, but also for his role in shaping French democracy. He is buried in the Panth?on alongside Alexandre Dumas and ?mile Zola.

Good classroom edition

I like teaching this novel, but I don't have time to teach the full text. This abridgement does a good job of capturing the fullness of the story and the characters in about 40% of the pages. I like the historical timelines at the beginning and the Notes sections at the end. My students find the novel easy to manage, too.

ABRIDGED - falsely labeled

I am very disappointed that the copy is advertised as "complete and unabridged" - right on the cover! This is definitely NOT complete or unabridged. Les Miserables is a fantastic book, but I would not recommend this publication by "Enriched Classics". Nor will I buy any from this publishing company again. I believe they should label their books honestly and correctly. If you want to read an unabridged version, do not buy this book.

Trashy, Inept, and Deceptive Treatment of a Classic

Nowhere in this edition does it say whether the book is abridged or unabridged. Nowhere does it say who the translator is. Wouldn't these be basic facts a customer is entitled to know?

Rather ironic omissions for an "enriched" edition allegedly full of supplementary helpful information.

Even worse, I strongly suspect (from another version of this 'enriched' edition on Amazon) that the translator is Charles Wilbour, a man who seems to always pop up as the translator of many French novels, but a man who should never be allowed near the French language:

As someone who knows French, I counted on just the first half page -eight- different unclear - or just plain wrong - translations. Some of them render a French word into a little known,stilted, or archaic English word.

That's when I said "Ah! This has to be Wilbour" . . . And I tossed the book with great force at the radiator.

Required Reading for Accountants assisting Lean Operations

Very few companies in the United States use Lean manufacturing or service methods. Because of this, most people in business don't know much about Lean operations. Most especially, they don't know how accounting has to change in order to support and strengthen Lean operations. Who's Counting takes the fundamental messages about Lean operations and translates them into an easier to understand format for adjusting accounting to fit.
In many companies that have started Lean operations, the effort was later abandoned because no one understood the accounting and earnings implications of a Lean transition until it was started.
These challenges include going from measuring and "controlling" after-the-fact with statistics that operating people don't find very helpful to real time measurements created and used by the operators, dealing with write-offs as obsolete inventory is discovered as inventory levels are reduced, absorbing an unusual amount of overhead costs as production drops along with inventory, and finding enough work for operating people to do after their productivity goes up by 50 plus percent. Along the way, the company has to run its old accounting methods while it adjusts to the new ones. There's a terrific amount of work involved for the accountants, and it doesn't go away. At the same time, they need to learn about Lean operating methods so that they can play a role in finding better process methods.
Who's Counting? exposes almost all of the issues that can affect accounting in the first two years of a Lean transition. From that point of view, this is a five-star book.
I found, however, that the book was a little light on explaining how the Lean transition would take place in operations. Most accounting people will need to read another book about Lean operations to fully understand the concepts.
The situation in the book will strike some as far-fetched, but it works well to expose the relevant subjects. Many companies start Lean transitions without understanding the implications for how operations will have to be adjusted. That's about the same as in the book where the Lean expert, Mike Rogers, fails to provide enough advance warning about accounting and earnings issues.
I especially liked the ways that Mr. Solomon showed how denial can play a role in slowing down progress . . . and that the motives of those encouraging Lean operations may not be totally pure (as shown here by Joe Reynolds, a member of the board).
As I finished the book, I wondered how companies could get a more realistic understanding of what the Lean development process is like for all of their people before starting. I suspect that many more Lean transitions would succeed if the decision-makers and essential implementers could do so.
Good luck with getting rid of "muda" ("waste" in English).

Decent Read on Lean

This is a pretty lousy novel, having weak dialog and lacking any meaningful character development. However, it is a decent business book telling us the fictional story of one company's quest to become lean. Saying that it is "a lean accounting novel" is somewhat of a misnomer since it doesn't tell us much about lean accounting. Rather the book tells us more about accounting in a lean environment.

The book has a fault common in many business books. Rather than compare two different business techniques done well, it compares a new technique with a well-established technique done poorly. When the company's problems with MRP are discussed, MRP is blamed for the problems, not the company's inept use of MRP. In the story, when the company lies to its MRP system, the MRP system is blamed, not the poor management of the system.

Not enough time was spent on what lean is, and the theories and techniques of lean.

I work in Finance for a Fortune 200 company that is 100% committed to the Lean Journey. This book has been distributed, read and re-read throughout the company's leadership, both in Finance and in other areas, to help frame the issue of why Finance can be a barrier or an enabler to Lean. It does a great job of explaining not only the technical issues but really demonstrates the cultural obstacles and why they exist, all in an easy-to-read story. I would highly recommend this book to anyone and in particular Finance leaders who are wondering where they fit in with Lean.

Standard of Excellence Book 1 Alto Sax

This is an excellent book for beginners. I bought it used for a penny! There was a fair amount of writing inside but nothing in pen. Obviously used with creases, but that was expected. Still in good condition with no tears or loose pages. The books content is perfect for grasping necessary concepts of music. I look forward to my children using it.

Interesting Insight Into The Mind And Trading

A sort of cliche wise old man approach to learning trading. Such as, "To learn to trade the markets, you must first learn to trade yourself." Not much in the way of trading systems, but it reveals that learning to trade is first a task of conquering your fears. This is perhaps why it is so difficult for most.

This book fascinated me and had instilled a more profound passion and deeper love for the intricacies of Forex trading. It certainly seems to assert that the markets are a mirror of yourself.

A How-to on Belief Change

This book clearly explains how BELIEFS drive cognitive functioning. If you are interested in more accurately perceiving object reality (rather than your filtered versions of it) then this book is for you. Douglas explains how beliefs filter reality. He then goes on to explain how to manage your beliefs, such that you become more adaptive and learn faster from experience. He provides specific mechanical steps for engaging in belief change.

This book is actually about becoming more fully conscious ! Douglas shows you how. Douglas confirms the findings of Ariel and Mack in the book INATTENTIONAL BLINDNESS. To appreciate this book, you really do have to understand the IB phenomenon as described in that book...

"Our committed expectations about the future will act as a force on our perception of market information to control its flow into our mental system in such a way as to avoid a confrontation with anything that doesn't conform with what we already believe is possible."

What Douglas is saying is simple: predictions are beliefs, and you will automatically ignore data that invalidates your beliefs. Beliefs, including predictions and judgments, are in fact filtering your perception of objective reality. This means that what you believe has everything to do with what you notice or perceive.

This book is actually a classic, from a layman, on cognition and cognitive process. The biggest contribution to cognitive science here is the coverage of fear and how fear narrows perception in a very dangerous way for traders. Approach the book as a cognitive science book written by a very experienced and knowledgeable layman and you'll enojy this book tremendously. The subject matter is applicable well beyond the trading domain. However, since trading is so psychologically demanding, it is in fact a laboratory for understanding cognition and cognitive effects produced by emotions like fear. Buy this book if you want the inside scoop on how you actually are perceiving the world around you.

Pearls of wisdom - encrypted over and over

First off let me assure you that Mark Douglas deserves all the generally positive reviews he's received for this book and for "Trading in the Zone." What Douglas has to share is essential, extremely valuable information for both aspiring and veteran traders alike. That said, stand warned that Mr. Douglas has quite a tedious writing style. He suffers (and thereby, so does the reader) from a particularly diffuse, circular, and repetitive style. He gives redundant a bad name. Here's a sample, you be the judge:

"Our committed expectations about the future will act as a force on our perception of market information to control its flow into our mental system in such a way as to avoid a confrontation with anything that doesn't conform with what we already believe is possible." Got that? Then this book is for you.

You don't have to worry about picking between The Disciplined Trader, and Trading in the Zone - Mr. Douglas is so repetitive that he essentially wrote the same book twice. Material from each book is either reprinted verbatim or repeated in a slightly different way in the other.

In fairness, Douglas is struggling to convey some very complex psychological concepts which don't easily distill down to catchy one-liners. Still, for all of his good things to say, Mr. Douglas would only benefit from a good editor.

Stick with it though - the keys to success are buried within. And then re-encrypted over and over.

Outstanding!

Wow! Where the first books in this series were sizzling, steamy hot, this book will take you on an emotional rollercoaster. It continues to showcase the outstanding writing of Sharlyn G. Branson . Believe me, she is one of the best at writing sexy, steamy, scorching hot sex scenes, but this book also shows how well she can write the highly emotional, devastating, life changing scenes. You really need to read this series, starting with book 1, and hop on the rollercoaster of Alexander's and Alexia's relationship. I can't wait for Book 5. I received this book from the author in return for an honest review.

A Must Read!

Wow! Just wow! I was totally unprepared for what happens in this book. I don't want to give anything away so I will just say...be prepared. While things are heating up and moving forward with Alexia and Alexander, the unimaginable happens possibly destroying the bond that they have fought so hard for. I really wasn't sure if our couple was going to pull through this and make it out the other side unscathed.
Looks like we will have to wait for volume 5 to see if Alexia and Alexander will get a happily ever after...

What a twist...

After four books I think I must say something about this series. Well, I like it and the characters have grown on me and I feel like I love them. The story had started so easily with a love at first side (which I don’t believe in and it was difficult for me to accept) and book after book that love became more passionate and forceful and I liked it. I think Alexander and Alexia are the most jealous couple I have ever read about, but in all their weaknesses I came to terms with their nature and I can say I like them and love them.
Finally as far as the fourth book is concerned, I can only say, what a... shock. I was literally speechless. I couldn’t believe what was happening. Sharlyn really didn’t give us many clues for what was coming but I am definitely positive about it. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t like what had happened and I don’t find pleasure in torture but the twist was really good for the whole story and I think the relationship of Alexander and Alexia is much stronger now. What I have missed in this book was the POV of the hero, I strongly believe it was necessary at some parts but other than that I liked it. Also I have to say that Alexander had some really killer lines in this book.
Well, that’s all and I am waiting the fifth book and a really happy ending.
