Spanning the period from 400 to 1700, the second edition of Witchcraft in Europe assembles nearly twice as many primary documents as the first, many newly translated, along with new illustrations that trace the development of witch-beliefs from late Mediterranean antiquity through the Enlightenment. Trial records, inquisitors' reports, eyewitness statements, and witches' confessions, along with striking contemporary illustrations depicting the career of the Devil and his works, testify to the hundreds of years of terror that enslaved an entire continent.

Thomas Aquinas, Martin Luther, Thomas Hobbes, and other thinkers are quoted at length in order to determine the intellectual, perceptual, and legal processes by which "folklore" was transformed into systematic demonology and persecution. Superb collection of medieval documents on witchcraft from 400-1770 in Europe

If you're someone interested in the growth of witchcraft during the medieval era, you must own this text. Comprised of 69 treatises of well-known individuals in the time span mentioned, this book basically covers the whole shebang and they're all original sources. A superb text for a student of medieval history, witchcraft specifically and its growth over 1300 years, and the crushing results of such beliefs. You can pick or choose who to read depending on your interests or gobble up the whole book and come away well-rounded regarding your knowledge of the rise of witchcraft in medieval Europe. A must-have book for those studying this period.

Great collection

This book is a collection of source documents, arranged in roughly chronological order, relating to the development of the medieval views on witchcraft and the witch craze. It ends with later, more skeptical voices such as Reginald Scot.

The book begins with excerpts from the works of St. Augustine, eventually works its way through the writings of Thomas Aquinas, the Malleus Malifacarum, witch trial testimony, and even dissenting opinions in verdicts. It shows clearly the development of the image of witch from misguided pagan through diabolical child-killer and the eventual triumph of skepticism in the wake of dangerously self-fulfilling witch hunts.

Should public and private creditors not be paid if they gave money to corrupt governments?

Debt cancellation for developing countries is a subject that has attracted much attention and little real action, despite in 2005 G8 countries and few other countries have taken some clear-cut commitment. This readable book provides:

a) a quick description as to how developing countries got trapped into unsustainable debt levels. But among developing countries it fails to distinguish between middle-income emerging market economies and low-income economies. Therefore, the author jumps to the conclusion that Argentina (or Turkey) and Somalia (or Botswana) should be treated the same.

b) a simple theory, which suggests that developed countries often offered loans to corrupt governments (or full-fledged dictatorship) of developing countries and therefore, the peoples of those countries cannot bear the burden of servicing that debt, for which they did not benefit at all. Thus understood the problem, the full debt cancellation is a moral (and maybe legal) obligation. The author does not develop further that theory, but in practice she says that those countries that have violated human rights, or more specifically, at the time of borrowing were violating civil and political liberties, and/or economic, social and cultural rights should be provided full debt cancellation. Who and how the violation would be assessed is not clear, but this idea merits to be developed further and into operational detail.

I would recommend it for the general reader and those interested in development issues.

Genuine relief

The relief of debt for poorer countries is an issue which many support but few really understand. Noreena Hertz is someone who knows what she is talking about. She formerly worked at the World Bank and in now Professor of Economics at Cambridge. She is also a tireless campaigner for debt relief.

What I most appreciated was her ability to explain the economics in a way that was both understandable and convincing. She tells us how the debts came about - often during the cold war in an attempt by the West to gain and maintain areas of influence in the developing world. She also reminds us that many of these loans went to corrupt leaders of countries whose citizens now have to pay the price. As a result basic human needs - food, housing, and healthcare are sacrificed to service the debt payments.

We are left in no doubt that we carry a significant responsibility for this situation. This is why we should lobby our leaders to write of these debts. It is easy to say that fault lies on both sides. That may be so but if poor children have to pay then we who are in a position to do something should do all that we can.

She writes all of this in a very readable style. This book did far more than big events such as Live 8 to convince me of the need to do something. I would urge all readers to get hold of a copy and read it!

In addition, he aspired to experience the "real Africa." After several decades of traveling through Southern Africa, the United Kingdom and Australia, Raymond achieves his professional goal: TV production in Johannesburg.

Racial politics impels Raymond and his family to reach the Australian safe haven of Canberra. In the 1980s, Raymond moves with his wife and two sons to Zimbabwe, where he works as a producer and teacher, and becomes deeply involved in the local community. But soon, Raymond sees the inevitable writing on the wall. It is time to say, “Goodbye” to Africa.

About the Author:
Author Desmond Bishop writes because he wants to engage the world around him. He started writing educational documentaries for the ABC in Sydney, in 1975. Desmond has worked as a producer and a teacher. His next book, The Wizard of Zee, tells the story of a boy who meets a wizard who teaches him to believe in himself. Desmond grew up in British colonial Southern Africa. Although he now resides in Asia, he enjoys travelling back to Nimbin, Australia, where he has a deep connection to the community.

Portrait of the Artist as a young African

I read Goodbye Africa shortly after watching the 2010 World Cup hosted by South Africa and noted there were no vuvuzelas blaring in the background. For Bishop's book is on the side of art, drama in particular, and not sport. It is an excellent and very engaging account of his life and struggles for his art in colonial and post colonial Africa, in particular South Africa, Zambia (then Northern Rhodesia) and Zimbabwe. That Raymond Spencer is the Desmond Bishop is apparent from the outset with a news story featuring his trouble in the infant South African TV (SABC-TV) for his subtle critique of apartheid, albeit even in children's television. His opposition to apartheid shows over the years of his artistic development and his departure from Africa on a few occasions resulted from it.

This autobiography is an African version of "the portrait of the artist as a young man" and well worth the read. I googled Desmond Bishop and got many returns for Desmond Bishop Tutu who I'm sure would also read and approve of Goodbye Africa, the old Africa of colonialism and apartheid. Get your copy now!

Great book for intermediate guitar players

I bought this book about a year ago and has been playing though the songs and post them to YouTube. Most of the arrangements are for intermediate level fingerstyle players. If you know fingerpicking, you can add hammer-on and pull-off to make the song sound fuller, I highly recommend this book. If you want to sample some of the songs or tabs, go to YouTube and find my channel "hofei". Happy playing!

Nice, Easy-to-Play Arrangements

This is a nice "pick-up-and-play" book with nice arrangements of some great hymns. As with any guitar tab you need to work out your fingering, but these arrangements are built around common chords which makes the fingering easier. Christian guitarists will really appreciate this book.

expand your repertoire

I bought this book after learning the songs in another book by Hal Leaonard (Fingerpicking Hymns 15 songs). This one is a bit more difficult but both have tabs and a good song selection. I would say intermediate level. A few songs with alternate tuning (drop D). Best suited for nylon strings but I suppose any guitar will do. I've received positive feedback after playing a variety of these songs for special music or offeratory during church service.
