A well organized survey

The great advantage of Varieties over many other introductions to the philosophy of the social sciences is that it is organized like a traditional textbook. It is not written for speed reading, but it assumes no prior technical knowledge on the part of the reader. New concepts are properly introduced as needed. Lecturers will be pleased to borrow from its many detailed examples of the various forms of social scientific explanation. Fashion-conscious readers should beware; Little is concerned with more traditional social scientific approaches. He might be classified as an "analytical" philosopher, and he doesn't devote much space to anything smacking of postmodernism & co.

The formatting of the e-book is a disaster. The text does not fit on the screen; sentences continue off-screen, which makes it impossible to read this otherwise interesting if basic introduction to social science methodology and theory.

Varieties of Social Explanation: An introduction to the Phil

This is good introduction to the scientific nature of social sciences. It is not light reading and may require some time to study and understand the examples, but it gives a good foundation to understanding the logical basis for the "soft sciences". This book is full of examples for understanding the thought process necessary for thorough comprehension of social sciences. I would recommend this book to anyone intrested in better understanding the logical foundation of any type of social ananlysis. This is not a light reading book. It takes effort to understand the examples and theories presented.

The value of this volume to Joyce scholars and students is obvious; however, its usefulness to anyone who reads Ulysses is as great, if not greater. Indispensible for Joyce scholars

Pay no attention to the negative review above. If you are looking for an apparatus to use in reading Ulysses, this book and Harry Blamires' Bloomsday Book are the best available. Neither seeks to use Joyce's text to advance its own agenda, but rather to explicate the text, which is difficult going for a new reader, but worth the effort. Whereas Blamires summarizes each chapter of Joyce in his book, this is a page by page list of Joycean allusions, permitting more back and forth shuttling between the apparatus and Ulysses. If you are looking for a guide for students, I would prefer Blamires for younger undergrads who might not be able to follow what is happening in Joyce without summaries, and this one for more advanced students and scholars.

Second only to "Ulysses Annotated"

I recommend "Ulysses Annotated" before I recommend this one to fans of Joyce's great novel "Ulysses." However, as an aid, this book is highly readable and is less encyclopedic than "Ulysses Annotated," which covers more ground, as is its nature. So, buy "Ulysses," "Ulysses Annotated," and then "Allusions in Ulysses," in that order, and you should be set for life. Long life and success to Joyce and his followers!

Very Helpful

For those who want to understand some of the apparent oddities in the text. This book does not tell you what's going on, but clarifies where certain words and phrases come from (music hall songs, philosophy texts, political campaigns, etc.) that a modern reader or even non-scholar would have no idea of. Of all the companion books to Ulysses I'm familiar with this is the most useful for actively reading the pages themselves.

About the Author
Dr. Dennis P. Nolan has had a long career devoted to risk engineering, fire protection engineering, loss prevention engineering and systems safety engineering. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Business Administration from Berne University, Master of Science degree in Systems Management from Florida Institute of Technology and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Fire Protection Engineering from the University of Maryland. He is a U.S. registered professional engineer in fire protection engineering in the state of California.

He is currently on the Executive Management staff of Saudi Aramco, located in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, as a Loss Prevention Consultant/Chief Fire Prevention Engineer. He covers some of the largest oil and gas facilities in the world. The magnitude of the risks, worldwide sensitivity, and foreign location make this one the highly critical fire risk operations in the world. He has also been associated with Boeing, Lockheed, Marathon Oil Company, and Occidental Petroleum Corporation in various fire protection engineering, risk analysis, and safety roles in several locations in the United States and overseas. As part of his career, he has examined oil production, refining, and marketing facilities under severe conditions and in various unique worldwide locations, including Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Russia, and North and South America. His activity in the aerospace field has included engineering support for the NASA Space Shuttle launch facilities at Kennedy Space Center (and for those undertaken at Vandenburg Air Force Base, California) and “classified” national defense systems.

Dr. Nolan has received numerous safety awards and is a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers, He is the author of many technical papers and professional articles in various international fire safety publications. He has written four other books, Handbook of Fire and Explosion Protection Engineering Principles for Oil, Gas, Chemical and Related Facilities (1st, 2nd, and 3rd Editions), Fire Fighting Pumping Systems at Industrial Facilities (1st & 2nd Editions), Encyclopedia of Fire Protection (1st & 2nd Editions), and Loss Prevention and Safety Control Terms and Definitions. Dr. Nolan has also been listed for many years in “Who’s Who in California”, Who’s Who in the West”, Who’s Who in the World” and Who’s Who in Science and Engineering” publications. He was also listed in “Outstanding Individuals of the 20th Century” (2001) and “Living Legends” (2004), published by the International Biographical Center, Cambridge, England.

Sex in the City Meets Judy Blume

I adore Kindra's book... as I said in the title, her stories have the hilarity of SITC with the wise lessons (and PG rating) of a Judy Blume book. I highly recommend this book, it's fun you'll laugh... and while you're at it, pick up a few copies for the girls in your life, they'll thank you for it.

Kindra Hall is hysterical! Her energy and positivism is contagious... I read this book in the car during a road trip. I found myself laughing out loud so many times that I had to read several chapters to my husband. Overall, a great, easy, fun read.

Hands down, the best Boards prep out there

I don't ever write reviews; I consume them. But I found this book to be so superior to everything else on the market that I feel an obligation to share my opinion. Months before I started studying for the Boards, I surveyed people from my program who had taken the Boards in previous years to find out how they had prepared. Many people had used the purple Mowzoon book. While everyone said without fail that the "list format" made it hard to retain information, they found it useful from the standpoint of being comprehensive, if nothing else. I flipped through the book several times, but I was unable to convince myself that I would learn anything from it, precisely because information is arranged in a tabular format, with next to no context, and that's not how I learn. Everyone I talked to said they had also used NeuroPrep, the only widely used online neurology question bank out there. One person even said he had used NeuroPrep exclusively, knowing he didn't have the time to read a text book like Adams and Victor, or the attention span to benefit from a book like Mowzoon. Somebody else cited similar objections to Mowzoon and said she had used Ultimate Review (featured on the AAN website) because it had more text than tables. Incidentally, both of these people passed their Boards.

I decided not to bother with Mowzoon, so I went ahead and bought NP and UR. As I started making my way through these two resources, I realized early on that UR is full of factual errors, as some reviews had correctly pointed out. How the AAN can endorse such a book is not the subject of this discussion, but suffice it to say UR is not a reliable resource. As for NP, I found the questions were mostly OK, but the answer explanations were entirely too cursory. Only a handful of explanations went into detail regarding why the other choices were wrong, while the majority offered no in-depth discussion. Many images were poor quality, with explanations that failed to point out the salient features of the image with arrows or arrowheads. I also found more than a few factual errors in NP. In short, NP is greatly over-rated.

This pushed my hand to seek out other resources. I had used First Aid for all the USMLE Steps, and I liked their format, so I bought First Aid for the Neurology Boards. While I was doing an internet search for other books, I also came across Comprehensive Review in Clinical Neurology. There were no more than 3 or 4 reviews I could get my hands on, but they were all positive, so I thought it was worth a shot. It turns out it's by far the best resource for Boards preparation out there. While I was going through this book, I re-discovered my love for neurology, which had been forced into a state of hibernation through the tedium of residency. The book is arranged into 17 chapters, covering everything from critical care to psychiatry, as well as the pertinent basic science highlights for each subject. My particular weaknesses were neuromuscular, epilepsy, and child neurology, which I covered first. The questions are hard and thought-provoking, and require you to stay on your toes (e.g. all of the following are correct except...). The answer explanations are a pleasure to read--detailed, accurate, comprehensive, and long enough to be useful without dragging on and on. The images are fantastic (pathology, EEG, EMG etc.). Perhaps most important of all, the book gives you that sense of a comprehensive review, true to its otherwise uninspiring title. I learned a lot from this book, and I'm grateful to the people who put it together. It's worth its weight in gold.

I just took my Boards, which means I don't have my score yet, but having read Comprehensive Review, I can at least say that I found the majority of questions on the actual test easy, to the point of being trivial. I was afraid that preparing for this exam was not going to add anything to my knowledge base, that it was going to be just another standardized test that you pass by memorizing certain buzz words and phrases, but I'm happy to say that I came away from my Boards preparation with a whole new appreciation for the beauty of neurology and a whole new confidence about my knowledge base.

To make this a balanced review, let me add this. The book comes with an online question bank, which is all the questions in the book, except they're online. I tried using this resource, but I found the book to be more useful. If you select random mode, the online version brings up questions in--you guessed it--a random fashion. There are many question stems in the book, just like the second half of the actual Boards Exam, so occasionally you'll get a question like "based on your diagnosis in question X, what should be the next step in management?" You haven't seen question X, so you have no idea what the diagnosis is, or what the next step ought to be. I bet this is something they can easily fix, by making sure question stems come up first and the sister questions follow from the question stem when you're using random mode, but this feature is not there at this point. So if you feel you have to do computer-based questions to prepare for that aspect of the test, you might find this frustrating. We've all taken so many computerized exams in our careers so far that I don't think this is crucial, but if you must, you can go ahead and sink some money into NP to practice your mouse click. Your money may be better spent on First Aid, which does have very helpful diagrams, tables, and other visual aids.

I cannot say enough about Comprehensive Review. It will continue to be a resource to me in the future.

Reason I Passed the Boards

Took the Boards for the first time in September. Relied mostly on this book and found I passed the Boards last Saturday. This book is excellent. I went through it about 3 times making notes on the detailed explanations. The book at the time I bought it also offered the questions online so you could review them from your computer. This book is comprehensive and well worth the price.

Great question/answer explanations

Since I had never heard about this book, I was a little hesitant to purchase it. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The question explanations are very detailed and written in a way that is easy to follow. The questions are broken down by subspecialty with the basic sciences incorporated into each subspecialty section. After taking and passing the Boards, I would highly recommend this book as a question/review source.

RUPERT LEON was born in London and educated at Dulwich College. In these memoirs he chronicles many of the interesting and revealing situations he encountered while serving with the British Army during World War II. As a young man in 1940, he served briefly with the Royal Artillery and was later transferred to the Intelligence Corps, with responsibility in Field Security of Army Divisions active in various parts of Africa. He encountered Italian Resistance in Ethiopia, dealt with diamond smugglers in Somaliland, and in Madagascar, befriended the spy who assisted the British Forces land safely on the Island.

In 1944 Rupert Leon was posted to Germany seconded to the American Counter Intelligence Corps of the Ninth American Army.

His duties in Camp 030, near Hamburg, involved conducting interviews and interrogating individuals connected with the Nazi regime, in order to gather military and political Intelligence useful to the Allied forces, at that particular time. It was not his duty to interrogate and bring to justice war criminals: that was done elsewhere by the War Crime Commission.

The author was the first man on the side of the Allies to learn of Hitler’s marriage to Eva Braun and of their intriguing suicide. He interrogated Heinz Lorenz, one of the three couriers from Hitler’s Bunker trying to smuggle Hitler’s last Will and Testament to the West. He interviewed Baron von Cramm and another conspirator, both involved in the failed plot to blow up Hitler in 1944. He interrogated many senior SS officers, including Plenipotentiary in Denmark, SS General Werner Best. Soon after peace was declared, and before he was released from military service, Captain Rupert Leon succeeded in uncovering one of the top leaders of the Wehrwolf organization.

I liked the book, written without any bias, and with deep insight into the matters. No wonder that, reading such books, I can't make myself read fiction It's all the thrill which was real!!!
